Must Listen Albums & What Albums to Avoid? | @AskDEHH w/ Sophie
In this new Ask DEHH episode we were asked: As someone new coming into hip hop, what are good albums to start with and listen to? What are albums to ...
An Introduction should give a taste of the feel, different styles and
different sounds, so introducing someone to Hip Hop, i'd have to say:
1. Illmatic - This album is just, Hip Hop, that's all, this will tell you
what it ism whether you like it or don't like it, this is what Hip Hop is.
2. Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers - To show the hard aggressive style, the
unique sound, and the unique styles of everyone in the Wu.
3. Low End Theory - Jazz sounds, positive lyrics, laid back vibes, shows
the variation between the aggressive Hip Hop and this laid back style, just
to show that Hip Hop is not all misogyny, or threatening to kill people, or
even talking about the "hood", it shows a completely different style.
4. The Chronic or Doggystyle - The G-funk sound, the amazing production,
unique sound. Shows the "party" style of Hip Hop, and gives a glimpse of
Gangsta Rap.
5. Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Blackstar. Shows the consciousness of Hip Hop,
talks about real issues, which is what Hip Hop really needs, and this album
just symbolizes that whole section of the genre.
6. Madvillainy - COMPLETELY unique sound, before i heard this i had no idea
that this sound even existed, it's just something everyone must hear or
else they would never knew that Hip Hop could be...this, it's important.
This list is based off the different sounds that someone would need to hear
in an introduction to Hip Hop.
I think that (for beginners) just these 3 albums can cover every facet of
hip hop:
*Wu-Tang Clan* - *Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)* - Straight gansta rap.
Hard street rappers touch on their life, the hood, and occasionally their
lavish lifestyle. Classic dark, grimy production by the RZA, and it spawned
a whole new breed of lyrical as well as commercially successful artists.
Interchangeable with *Dr. Dre - The Chronic*.
*Snoop Dogg* - *Doggystyle* - This is the quintessential party record.
Almost devoid of any sort of political or introspective lyrics, this album
embodies the club atmosphere. Plus it is one of the most commercially
successful rap albums of all time. *Gin and Juice* is still a crowd pleaser
more than 20 years after its release.
*A Tribe Called Quest* - *The Low End Theory* - The pinnacle of the
afro-centric alternative hip hop phase in the late 80's to early 90's.
Well, one of them, at least. Perfectly embodies the underground hip hop
vibe - a couple of MC's just spitting over dope beats. No gangsta shit, no
fucking bitches or doing drugs, just lyrical assault.
