Oooh, this looks good, even my hubby is excited to watch this one :)
Near miss with airliner - flight following for general aviation

+GuiltyMiner0343 you know nothing about photography do you, the lens he uses atleast pushes the airliner 3 times farther on camera than human eyes register it if you were there, and basic knowledge of airmanship would also tell you some stuff

Oh, I hear you. Yes being in the business you may take it more personally. ATC did exactly as they should have here. Maybe near miss is a bad title when looking from your shoes. In my brief time in the air I have only had great experiences with ATC from NY to BOS. And we have some busy airspace up here. Thanks for all that you do.
I get that, however as a controller we pride ourselves on providing the best service possible. The term "near miss" is a HUGE DEAL and I'm just sticking up for my brothers behind the scope....that is NOT a near miss.
+Todd Hilton Thank you for watching. As low time pilots it certainly felt close. We probably spent too much time fixated on this aircraft as it seemed to be coming right at us. I'm sure we were safe as both planes were in contact with ATC. Being brand new it really caught our attention and it certainly felt close.
This is not even close to being a near miss. Vertical separation was in
excess of 500' if your video is to be believed, and the lateral separation
appeared to be a couple of miles.
+GA Flying I can appreciate that. It's certainly unnerving operating in proximity to commercial traffic. You were doing exactly the right thing in any case, identified the aircraft and assessed the threat. By keeping keen ear on the radio (not just for your own calls) you build a picture of what is happening around you. They stated they would level at 4000 and had you in sight.
+Robbie McFarlane Thank you for watching. As low time pilots it certainly felt close. It didn't look or feel like a couple miles at the time. The lens makes it appear smaller, even if it was 1 mile, that's plenty when it was behind us. I will agree with that now. Being new pilots at the time as we stared at it, it stayed in the same position only getting bigger. You can see in the video it certainly got our attention.

LAX 747 Near Miss Real Event Animation With Actual Audio
An NTSB animation that reconstructs a real event with actual audio a 747 that is cleared to land on Rwy 24 -- the same runway that another jet liner is cleared to ...
ATC were not at fault at all, they cleared southwest to depart from 24l and
his readback was confirmed twice for 24L. now atc is correct in assuming
that the pilots know the difference between left and right. This is the
reason the atpl syllabus is so lengthy and in depth. I cant believe atpls
would make such basic errors. Now also remember that atc arent required to
check every action of experienced pilots, once they give an instruction
which is read back correctly they take it as read.
ATC was assuming that the 747 was landing on 24R.. thats why he told
Southwest 737 to takeoff 24L.. its hard to tell when aircraft are
approaching L or R runway because they are so close together.. its the
pilots responsibility to make sure they land on the correct runway. Pilot
Error nearly caused this one.. not ATC.
Wouldnt matter if its class a b or whatever, if its controlled airspace,
the pilots are under radar control and atc instructions are mandatory and
if a pilot cannaot comply with an instruction he must report the reason
why. The southwest pilot would have been in deep water obver this one.
The Asiana 747 on short final for 24L was cleared to land on that runway.
Just read the NTSB report. The communication you hear is with a UA 747
cleared to land on the parallel. Controller screwed up. NTSB attributed the
error to fatigue (controller had too short break between shifts).
There are 2 runways in use here 24L (left) for the departing aircraft, 24R
(right) for the arriving aircraft. The pilots of the departing aircraft
lined up on the wrong runway ... missed by a busy tower controller ... and
disaster averted by the landing aircrafts crew.
