Even the beach cruisers sold at walmart today have the exact same curves in
a larger frame.Schwinn was trying to sell off a surplus of Stingray frames
by converting them into bmx bikes. In 1977 I had a chrome 36/36 and a mag
scrambler in1980 that had no frame curves. My brothers 1975 comp scrambler
was the 1st true schwinn bmx frame also with no curves. My old 1974
stingray, and my 1968 stingray jr both had curved frames like yours.Schwinn
was converting them to sell old stock in a bmx style of bike
Your write up is interesting, wspecially the ending about 32 yrs later you
put on some skyway mags and are enjoying your childhood bike. I"ve been
planning to buy/put together such a bike, however I will select different
handle bars, square. I prefer a B M X style bike over a mountain bike for
the comfort of the riding position = less strain on the lower back and I
perfer the smaller wheels. At age 48, this seems like the best choice to
know off a fer pounds & maybe ride across the US?
So you know the difference between the early Competition Scrambler and the
36/36 slash Mag Scrambler. I like that brief window until about 78. I like
the bikes without the gussetts and the 77 78 paint colors. Even though the
gussets strengthed the frames. I never had a problem breaking any frames.
With all those bikes in your family I don't see how you missed the Stingray
Scrambler. Yes my silver bike has curved frame but I tell you it has
heavier welds at the weld points.
Its a 20 inch Scrambler. Its not a 16 inch jr. It was the first Scrambler
before the 36/36 and the Mag Scrambler and Competition Scramblers were
made. Its made of the Stingray frame with reinforced welds. Why would you
say its a junior. Ive had the bike since October of 1977 and have the
original catalog that described the bikes. Ive since purchased a Dec 78 Red
Mag Scrambler that has the same frame as the 36/36 but with mags.
I had a stingray jr and a stingray that have the exact frame geometry I
never saw a scrambler with a curved frame like that. I had a 36/36
scrambler and a mag scrambler neither were curved frames. A schwinn shop in
Orlando Fla turned my Stingray jr into a bmx bike by our request. If your
bike came with scrambler stickers it was a left over stingray converted
into a bmx bike due to poor stingray sales by the mid 70s.
They are in the 75-77 Schwinnn catalogs. They show up on ebay some. Schwinn
came up with this model in 75. I think it was the first mass produced BMX
bike. A stingray frame with heavier welds. I think they had the Competition
Scrambler which is different than the 36/36 //Mag Scrambler. I know the
frames you are talking about. I had to give $400 for a Mag Scrambler on
ebay back around Christmas 2011.
You have a schwinn sting ray jr frame not a scrambler. My 1st bike was a
1969 stingray jr that was turned into a bmx style bike in 1976. I got a
chrome schwinn scrambler 36/36 in 1978, and then a tuff mags scrambler in
1981. The stingray jr frame you have is extreemly valuable now if restored
to it's original condition but not as cool as a bmx bike for sure :)
The 36/36 is kind of a modified Stingray without those two little curved
bars even thought the body fo the 36/36 is more diamond shaped. 36/36 and
Mag frames are identical. My silver bike original had those thick gauge 36
spoke wheels. I still have them. Its hard to explain. I know you think Im
crazy. You would just have to see this silver bike in person.
Schwinn called them all Scramblers though. The banana seat bike and the
once you are talking about. The Competition Scrambler had a different
backside than the 36./36 and Mag Scrambler. By 80 they all looked like
Competition Scramblers.
@Knightmixer I managed to buy a Dec 78 Red Mag Scrambler off ebay a few
months ago to compliment my old Scrambler. Had to have the rear coaster
brake assembly and front axle rebuilt once it arrived. Rides smooth as
glass now though.
Also, I want to do wheelies again! At your local library, check out and
read the book: Miles from Nowhere, by Barbara Savage...........she and her
husband Larry rode their bikes around the world in 1979.
That is cool that you still have your childhood bike after all these years.
I was fortunate to own a Mag Scrambler way back when. Wish I still had it.
Thanks for the video.
nice bike i got a 75 scrambler as will but im mixing the parts with custom
lowrider parts and schwinn bmx parts.already put 2k into it and still not
done :( almost there
i remember riding endless "wheelies" on my scrambler and riding without
hands. those bikes were the best for anything you wanted to do. i miss
those times

WOW...That was way cool dude! Took me back to being a 10 year old kid
seeing you on your scrambler in the garage! That was me with my comp
scrambler bike I had built up from parts. Took a while and I remember
having some stingray frame and then saving up forever to buy the frame and
other parts over time. BMX is, was and still is so much more then just a
bike to ride. It totally re-directed my life. THANKS For Posting! PSR
