William Grant Still. Symphony 1 Afro-American.(III) Detroit S.O. Neeme Järvi
Third movement, Animato from the Symphony No. 1 "Afro-American" by the american composer William Grant Still performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra ...
I think you're rather naive as it seems '' from a political perspective''
we'll i suppose there's that and reality then if you're a muslim or ''arab
looking'' they will think you are a terrorist (''they'' being the avreage
american) if you're negroid they'll assume you're a theif or a criminal and
have an extra eye on you, if you're hispanice they'll generally assume the
same along with the assumption that you're an illegal immigrant. these are
all stereotypes brought by the media.
@jslasher1 I disagree. In my opinion, racism is borderline nonexistent in
this Country. From a political perspective, African Americans have just as
much rights as Whites, Hispanics, Etc. If you think about it, slavery, the
civil rights movements, K.K.K, etc are all contributions to the free
country America has become. I think Blacks should look back at all they
have achieved and move forward, it's not about how we got here, or what
we've been through, it's where we are going.
@TheVrajr This piece was loosely based on "I got Rhythm." I find it so
horrific that Still is so underrated. I've never really heard of him, nor
his music, until about a week ago. Such a great composer. He's one of the
few composers which I can think of off the top of my head who actually has
a style which he can call his own.
When the discussion comes around to great 20th century American composers,
William Grant Still need not take a seat in the back of the bus ... he'll
be the one in the driver's seat ... this is a great piece of work ....
isn't it interesting that foreign composers are all jazzed about Still and
our other black composers--but American conductors haven't gotten on the
band wagon. wonder why? reverse native concert bias?
And that's also where the problem lays... news in general, propaganda
spreading racial hatred as long as we are busy hating eachothers there will
be no problem controlling this corrupt world.
A wonderful work by the 'Dean of Afro-American Composers'. Racism existed
then, much as it does now, which is why the music of this great composer is
sadly neglected in the USA.
@MichaelDPorter I never specified white Americans as being enslaved, but
there are many occasions where white people were used as slaves outside of
North America.
