Don't skip intro- people need to know this even if it's redundant.
I read Alexis De Toqueville's Democracy in America- He came from France in
about 1830, spent a few years traveling the young US from the east coast to
the remotest limits of the white man, then about somewhere west of modern
Michigan. Beyond that was the unknown, where only legend abound.
The volumes contained the heart wrenching plight of both the black man and
the native man (the former story most are more familiar with, the latter-
not so much..) and let me tell you, what happened to the native people of
this land is unimaginable.
The writer does a nice job by juxtaposition in comparing the two races'
hardships in the 'new world'.
There was human suffering on a scale that just obnoxiously violates the
imagination. When you allow yourself to really try to imagine, you're
completely horrified.
That's not to diminished the also untold suffering of blacks, a story which
also needs to be told in detail, but the plight of the native probably
surpasses even that of slaves. I know that's saying a lot, and it's not
like it's some morbid competition, but people need to know what happened on
the very soil they inhabit.
