Convert DVD to digital format
This podcast will explain how to take a DVD you own and covert it into a digital copy to save on to your computer with Handbreak. It will then also talk about how ...
I have Win 7 64 bit. DVD43 says its not compatible with 64 bit and also I
have anydvd which says it conflicts with. What can I do? Can I use the
anydvd instead of dvd43? Thanks
It has been sometime since I have done this so I can not say if DVD43 is
still currently supported or will work with modern DVDs. I will see if I
can find any information...
I used Handbrake on my disc. After is converted to digital copy, I played
it and it glitched the whole time as if the disc was scratched up (which it
is not)
Super 8mm film WILL NOT get "Brittle, Dry and Start Cracking - and Soon be
unable to play". (as you have just said).. That's RUBBISH! Super 8mm film
was made to last at least 100 years. It is NOT nitrate film, so it cannot
burn -- and it keeps its colour beautifully through the years, as long it
is stored in a cool dry place, such as that box you have it in... On the
other hand -- that DVD that you have transferred the film to, is MUCH MORE
likely to suffer Disc-Rot over the next ten years or so, and you will end
up with nothing if you throw away your original Super 8mm Film; so for GODS
sake - never throw away the original film, because DVD-s are now slowly
giving way to Blu-Rays; and then of course Blu-Rays will give way to some
newer technology eventually. So if you haven't kept the originals, then you
will lost them forever..... And your childrens Grand-children will never
get to see the Super 8 Film. Just remember this important fact!!!!!! Once
something has been transferred to DVD or Memory Stick, it doesn't mean it's
there FOREVER!!!!!! Your computer could crash and you could lose the whole
thing! And then imagine if you'd thrown away the original film!
+Davidalp1 They key there is BACKUP. Once you digitize something and BACK IT UP it's good forever. Best is to give backups to family members so they can enjoy them now, and for years to come. Film will always deteriorate, some slower, some faster. I had one Super 8 that half-peeled off and left blotches - wierd, it wasn't mildew, and was in the box with all the other films which were OK. I wish I'd gotten to some of our old photos before the dyes faded out.
James Van Damme: There are several ways to get rid of flicker or at least reduce it (cheap ways). One is to have a projector with film speed control. By running the film a little faster or slower you can usually reduce the flicker or eliminate it. Another way is to use the program "VirtualDub" and a deflicker filter. Both can be found on the Internet. Instructions come with it. A good deflicker plugin is MSU- deflicker.
This technique will work, but looks like crap compared to any professional
transfer. Do not think you will be getting good results, because you won't.
The colors are washed out and there's visible keystoning in the image.
Note the top of the image is smaller than the bottom. The cost estimates
provided by the host are WAY too high. I've never paid $30 for a 50-foot
reel, it's more like $8-10, depending on how many reels you have. Save
yourself a lot of grief and let a service do the job correctly. Don't throw
away your films after transfer either! You may need to transfer them again
to some other format in the future. (Disclaimer - I am not in the video
transfer business, but I do have film/video production expertise.)
