+Rebecca Davis there aren't enough long term high fat eaters out there. Even though I made my previous comment, I still believe the overall more sickly looking group of people are the long term high animal product eaters than the long term vegans. The problem I tend to see with vegans is their lack of muscle, not so much they're bellies (which is the case with paleo/atkins types).
+DoctorJohnJGibbons my views have evolved since I posted those comments. To answer your question, I believe the human body can handle high carbs as long as you don't also eat a lot of fats, and vice versa. It's when you a lot of both, esp the more processed types, that you see people gain massive weight and have diseases. That said, I will always seek to inflict the least pain and premature death on sentient animals as possible. So far, I'm fully vegan and have zero need to turn to eating slaughtered animals. Yes, I said as of now... not sure what the future holds.
+aattitude What about the high fat vegans who are bone skinny? You know, the ones who enjoy tons of coconut oil, avocados and cashews but are still very slim? Is there a divide between the low-fatters and the more normal vegans?
+geposefo Actually, Ornish has quite the belly. Very skinny-fat, plus he's also much more pale and sickly looking than Taubes. Must be all the artery clogging bread and "natural" sugars from fruit.
+geposefo The goal is always to reduce and minimize. Perfection is not possible. The goal should be to minimize the harm of animals and people, and I consider veganism as the best option for that.
+geposefo Dr. Atkins, Dr. Cordain, and Sally Fallon are three major figures in the low carb, high fat diet movements, and they're all fat. I can't even think of one true vegan who's fat. Dr. McDougall, Dr. Bernard, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Campbell, etc. and all other pro vegan diet proponents are slim even in old age. Says A LOT.
+geposefo You think he's fat? Obviously wishful thinking on your part! Why do you want and need to believe he's fat when it's obvious to everyone else that he's slim?

Ever think that people with ancestors that were more recently eating a
hunter gatherer type diet would benefit more by eating a Paleo type diet
right now? A lot of Asians seem to do fine on a high carb diet but a lot
their ancestors were eating rice for thousands of years. It might have to
due with genetics maybe we should all eat like are respective ancestors
ate.
