1940's Peerless/U.S. Air Compressor 2 Horsepower

This is a 2 cylinder compressor from the 1940's made by United States Air Compressor Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. The 2 HP motor is single phase, 240 volt.

We had an old compressor of similar size, though orange and made by the Au-to compressor company of OH, and it also had a Peerless motor. My grandfather bought the compressor from a place that went out of business in 1968, and it sat & became buried in a shed until 2002, when we finally unearthed it. It had a flat spot in the motor, but that was easily fixed. Unfortunately, it leaked oil like crazy & we couldn't identify a couple of the parts. The town welder had an identical machine, and was supposed to come out to see if he could fix ours. He showed up once, but we missed him. Than he died before he could make a second trip. With no info available online, we sold it. Only today did I discover there is some info online about Au-to - the patent to our old compressor, which date back to 1922 & 1924! And btw, the Peerless motor company is still in business over 115 years later!

I have one just like that. My motor needs work and I need the sight glass tube and the flywheel weights, but it has always been a great compressor.

you just have to admire the quality of these old machines! its very hard to find a new one that is quiet! and a new one that will last as long!

yep thats a repulsion start motor judgjing by the sound of it starting. they draw alot less starting amps than most other motors.

Na das ist ja ein riesen Schrotthaufen, echt schade! Wundert mich, dass man es so verkommen lässt, wenn es der Glanz einer Epoche mal war. Aber die Unterhaltungskosten bzw. Renovierungskosten sind sicher extrem hoch. Tolles Video! Gruss DrDuu

+DrDuu Danke Dir!Leider wurde seit 1969 nichts mehr am Schiff gemacht,obwohl es immer noch das stärkste und schnellste Schiff der Welt ist.Es soll ja ein Museumsschiff werden,aber der Aufwand ist sehr groß.

+Ham Airport Die United States wurde vor kurzem mit Hilfe einer Spendenaktion vor der Verschrottung gerettet und soll jetzt zum Museumsschiff umgebaut werden.
