alvagold: According to heavy oil producers, they can get the oil at a cost
as low as $20-$30 per barrel. Canada and Venezuela will be the biggest oil
producers in the world. That probably means "business as usual" for another
50 years at least. What's so devastating about it is, that due to the
availability of more oil, food production based on it, will increase
overpopulation even further making the word "sustainability" equal to
"miracle". Our only hope left, is that they are too optimistic.
BTW- There is plenty of land and resources on this planet to sustain many
times the current population. The only thing that is causing the strife is
the same thing that it has always been: The few people at the top of the
economic pyramid take way more than their share and hoard the rest in order
to keep the rest of us subservient. The Elite have caused this planetary
imabalence on purpose. I propose that we sterilize only the likes of The
Rothschilds, The Rockerfellers, and The Duponts.
The problem I am addressing is, that there are already more people on the
planet, than can be supplied with sustainable energy sources. India and
China are currently investing massivly in an economy system based on fossil
fuels. With cheap oil available for at least another 2 decades, they will
be able to feed more people and birth control won't be a priority any more.
There might be 9 billion people on the planet when peak heavy oil happens.
That's why I was hoping for an early peak oil
Nonsense. There is enough sustainable (solar) power to sustain the entire
planet, and probably 4 times more. It's just a question of advancing the
technology along so that solar becomes more efficient. Solar provides us
with the source of all energy, it's even the root source of fossil fuels.
It's resource is endless. All we have to do is capture it. Other factors
will decrease our population. Poverty. Starvation. Disease. Women's rights
becoming more universal.
alvagold: How about this solution: You can have as many children as you
like, as long as you can feed them and give them a good education. Rich
people would have lots of children, just to show off, how good they are.
Then, when the parents die, the wealth would be spread to many heirs. Poor
people would have only one or two children. But with a better education
they would be able to get better jobs later on and have more kids
themselves. How about that?
Bad news: The US go for heavy oil now. There are supposedly 12,000 billion
barrels of oil there to be extracted from oil sands. That would be
sufficient to supply earth for another 150 years with that dirt. That
simply means, that earth's population will continue to increase unhindered.
That a sustainable life style will continue to be a dream, while the
environment will be more and more damaged for another century. I am sad.
Well, I don't think the government has any right to tell a woman that she
can't have an abortion, but you have to be careful. It can be a slippery
slope. We don't want the government forcing or coercing women into having
abortions, either. That's even worse. It could be used as a tool for
genocide. The government should just stay out of reproduction. It's none of
their buisiness. :
mldnathai: I am glad to hear, that there is enough arable land to sustain
many times the current population. Can you provide me with figures? Do you
know, how many people can be housed and fed on a 50 sq km piece of arable
land with sufficient water available? Is it true, that most of the fish in
the ocean are gone due to overfishing? How can that be? The oceans are so
big.
Here in Illinois last season, many farmers chose not to harvest their corn.
Left it to rot in the fields. The price of corn fell as gas hit $4/gal. So
what does that tell me? It tells money is valued over people. Like the
story in the O.T. when Aaron led the Jews in worshipping the Golden Calf --
pretty much where we are today: the moral and spiritual desert.
That might have worked about 5 billion people ago. We now have 8 billion
and will see 11 billion within our lifetimes. 1 billion are starving to
death as we speak. The planet can only reasonably sustain 1 billion people
at any standard of living. The time for drastic action is fast approaching.
The longer we wait, the worse the situation will be.
I seriously doubt that we will be using fossil fuels 50 years from now. The
entire world is moving towards green energy very quickly. If we don't, then
we'll be left behind and become a 2nd world nation. Our population will not
likely continue of expand at the previous rate. If we don't address the
issue ourselves, some virus will.
The best way to control population growth is to give women equal rights
world wide. However, we should discourage people from having more than 2
kids. I say increase your income tax rate by 10% for every kid you have
past 2.
Hey there is an answer to birth control... It's called famine. It's called
war and it's brought to you by religion and intolerance. Our marine
resource are not managed they are exploited.
Using the oil sands is a question that's up in the air. It's only
economical to use it if oil reaches around $150 a barrel. If green energy
is cheaper, then green energy will be used.
Too true...about 40% of our oxygen supply is produce via ocean born
plankton that inhabit the top layers of seawater...that area most effected
by oil spills, pollution etc.
