FIRE Wire down MELTS CEMENT in Sibley Iowa's worst Ice Storm April 2013
Please read. The power wire was arcing and melting the cement like lava, as you will see in this video. April 10, 2013 was full of surprises starting with rain ...
That's incredible! And yep that's one of the top 4800V lines. You might be
more daring than I would have been. I watched one of these 'saw" through a
large tree one time both cutting it's main trunk while lighting it on fire.
The current can take all kinds of paths that can getya especially when the
ground is wet or even worse snowy or icy.. Distance is your friend here :-)
Also in these bad situations the HV wires can contact the Lower voltage
wires, and bring some of into the house.
When I was a kid I lived in Wisconsin and we sometimes would have ice
storms like this. We had couple of large rubber mallets and when we had ice
storms like you had we would go out into the yard and throw the mallets
into the trees which would break the ice without harming the trees. The
branches would spring back up without the weight of the ice. Just in case
someone is not thinking: *Never* throw rubber mallets at power lines with
ice on them; it's just plain stupid to do so.
Good grief! I reiterate the scariness mentioned by others on this! Can't
control the weather? Well ya gotta move to Panama! Or maybe you could just
by the hat. But, joking aside, I hate all these unexpected cold events.
We've had a share of it here in the good ol' U of K recently. And I mostly
feel so bad for the animals all around, especially the smallest ones. They
truly suffer in that ice storm. Little birds may well be frozen to death as
they roost on the branch. :¬(
Wow Dave looks like mother nature did her job on Sibley. Glad to see you
didn't have any major damage at you place. It was on the news that just up
the road from you in Worthington Minnesota was hit hard to. We had one here
a couple of year ago that did a lot of damage. I think I would rather see a
foot of snow instead of an inch of ice. It will probably all be gone by
Sunday, temps should be back up in the low 50s. Tom
Holy Shnikey! You guys got hammered! Take away all those houses and it
kinda looks like that forest in Russia that got leveled years ago.
Hopefully no serious injuries to anyone, and ma nature gives you guys a
chance recover and clean up. I never thought that wire would melt concrete
like that. A very dangerous situation, but MAN WAS THAT COOL LOOKING! Be
safe and thanks for the video report, Mr. Herbert.
wow, and you left California to go living in the country Dave ?! lol, glad
you are safe and hope not to much damage. You really got bad winters in
Iowa eh, hope summer comes soon,. In Belgium we got a long winter to but
not like you though, hardly a spring season and for tomorrow we maybe
expecting some better weather (15 °Celsius or so)... hoping for nice
weather to go flying again...
Thanks and your right, cause I thought about using my aerial video Phantom
in my yard, but after driving around town and seeing all the other folks'
damage, I kinda lost interest ,as I was saddened by the loss of so many
older beautiful trees that never had a chance since they never got any
thing to drink for so long, and they dried out.
This is a good example of how much labor force can be generated by
electrons in motion, impressive to see but very dangerous as well. Creates
a fairytale landscape but also a lot of unexpected and extra work to do. A
thanks message in the media to the workers and volunteers would be in place
here.
yah ! I'll stick to my old boring Texas weather ,Thank you very much , I
have a good friend that lost his right arm as a young child by picking up a
downed power line after Alisha ! stay safe my brother I along with millions
of other love you ! stay safe my friend !
Ice storms give you a helpless feeling. Were there a lot of popping sounds,
like a small war. We have had 2 ice storms in the recent past and I hate
them. Glad to see you are alright. Hang in there, Spring is out there
somewhere?? Greetings from St. Joseph, MO
I saw the news about Worthington, thought you guys might of dodged the
bullet on this one. Reminds me of that ice storm a few yrs back, when i
came over, 2 inches of ice on the car, had to stay an extra day, hehe! Hope
the weather dies down for you.
Good to see you, your family, friends and neighbors are all ok! It would be
a sad day to not have Mr. Herbert and family around! Congradulations to all
those hard workers too! Way to pull together in a crisis, I love seeing
that!
This sortof powerline failure is the power companys worst nightmare. It is
what is know as a high impedance fault to ground. The power co wants the
automatic recloser to detect and stop this from happening.
I understand your feelings, for sure. It's a sad situation from any angle.
People might think you're having fun at their expense and though that's not
the case, they might misinterpret your intentions.
That is really nothing, here in lansing right now there are trees falling
all around and transformers bhai lowing all over constantly, over .25
inches and falling, on top of 10 inches of heavy snow
Move back to California. It was 77 today in Los Angeles and a good day to
wear shorts. Looks to cold in Iowa for April. Stay clear of any down power
lines especially near any moisture.
What caused all the trees branches to break off, im in California so don't
deal with cold weather really. Pretty crazy how harsh the weather can be.
Thanks for the vid.
I've always had a LOT of respect for the people who are brave enough to
work with such high voltages and do so under the worst possible conditions.
Hats off to them!
Thanks for the comments. We are sawing and piling today, even though it is
still cool and now windy at 32. The cement was just like molten lava for
sure.
At least a dozen over worthing yesterday. It got manic at around 6.00pm.
Got my boy spreading the word amongst the other kids at school and my my
mum's rousing the silver surfing brigade after I showed her the other
afternoon as a lovely afternoon was spoiled by this stuff. She thought I
was joking ta first...doesn't everyone? Keep pesuading and showing
everyone, the proof's right there and friends are getting spooked by this
toxic stunt. Will post on here regularly from sunny (hmmm.) worthing.
Great Stuff Lads and Lady. I'm living on the west coast of Ireland we get
hit regularily by these meglomanicac designs. One great resourse for making
this real for people is to use one of the many flight tracker sites; one
day me and my mate could track a private filght from an airport in Bath
that made a b-line for Galway to dump its toxic load then return in under
half hour. Keep it up dudes, inspiring stuff.
hi terry hope we have not lost you to england ,,,too many good irish have
went and never came back....keep up the good work,,,you look happy and
thats good to see,,,later man
the video is acting up. looks like a good one, but it will only show me the
first 15 seconds worth! thanks for all your hard work and fearlessness,
Terry!
