thank you for documenting your travel. I am taking my first trip to Hong
Kong in just 5 weeks. I am really excited. I went to Taipei two years ago
and I fell in love with Asia and can't get back soon enough.
hey i go to newark every time i go to dominican republic thats so cool

RC quadcopter flying inside sealed box reduces weight - common sense really
This was a silly argument at work, its obvious to me that if you weigh a box with a quadcopter flying in, your just weighing the box itseld as the quadcopter isn't ...
I don't know why you a getting a mass reduction for the complete closed
system; box+air+quadcopter, it shouldn't be possible?
Maybe you have an EMI problem with your scale? Try suspending the box on
blocks a few millimeters above the scale and then redo the experiment. I
suspect that the motors or your transmitter is interfering with your
reading and you can reproduce your result without the box touching the
scale.
You could also redo the experiment on a mechanical scale, it wouldn't be
susceptible to EMI.
I think you are interpreting the results of this experiment wrong. The
weight goes down because the force of air is pressing down on the right
side of the box causing an imbalance of force across the box and thus the
scale reading is wrong. I just performed the same experiment and made sure
to tie down my helicopter to keep it from moving around and the weight does
*not* change inside a sealed box.
If you don't believe me, then take your interpretation to its logical
conclusion: the helicopter can fly to the top of the box, and if powerful
enough, the upward force on the top of the sealed box can lift the box off
the scale and the whole box can fly around like a magical UFO. Clearly,
this doesn't happen. Explanation: the air molecules hit the bottom of the
box and exactly cancel out the upward force, thus the scale won't change if
everything is kept lined up over the scale.
That said, I'm now going to run some more experiments to make sure I'm not making stuff up... Thanks for posting your video as it is making me rethink my process...
I'm confused, one of Newton's laws states that the quad must be exerting a
downward force equal to it's weight in order to hover right. So regardless
of whether it is hovering or landed the weight should remain the same no?
+M3ta7h3ad Exactly. WTF is wrong with these people?! Vibration can also make a simple balance 'weigh light'. There is a name for the sort of person who hopes to get an accurate weight for a moving object: that name is 'idiot'.
You're right. We are being crushed. The jumbo jet's displacement is spread out over a great area. To put things into perspective, we're currently being crushed by a giant column of air above us, yep even the gases that make up our atmosphere have a weight. The box went light due to the balance of the box changing, just as my weight changes if I was to stand on one leg or hold my arms out wide on my bathroom scales. Can't even believe this is even being debated tbh by folk who use the principles of lift and therefore physics in order to enjoy their hobby. :/
+Dave Pitt Great question, I am guessing the innitial jolt maybe, but if the elevator was really smooth accelerating then no throttle reduction would be necessary, as the air in the elevator is all moving down with you and the quadcopter. Would be a good video though if someone has an elevator ;)
+Aditya Gupta This might sound silly but if a quadcopter could stay in the air for say like 12 hours in one spot with no other forces acting on it like wind, it would end up on the other side of the planet?
+eroticmasterbaker surely if the car windows are closed there is no wind in the car, so if car is travelling 20kmph before take off quad will just hover level and stay in position (as no wind pushing it backwards), whereas if the car accelerated or braked it would then need forward/back stick to hold position inside the car. Maybe we need to try this next !!
Thanks, this is still boggling my mind, seeing as how their is no wind resistence affecting the quad. If I fly my quad level in wind it will drift with the wind.
imagine the car traveling at 20kmph with the quad sitting in the car. now the velocity of the quad is also 20kmph because it is attached to the car. butas soon as the quad lifts in the air and loses contact with the car, it will lose its velocity will drift back and the car will move forward. so yes you have to give forward stick to the quad.
