It really winds me up when rock bands get labeled as 'Alternative' when
there really isn't anything 'alternative' about it! I mean, most of it is
good, but by labeling it as 'alternative' meaning 'different', is somehow
wrong when you have bands like Pj Harvey, The Cure, Placebo, Korn and even
Muse. Bands of which nothing else compares! And Pj Harvey is a prime
example of this. I love it!
@osliczka13 Actually I'm not a long time fan, I'm getting to know her
(though actually I've come to Stories already, so there's not a lot more to
discover!), but this one is probalby one of the top 3 songs on Stories to
me! It's very far from the "hard rock" of the first albums, but I love it
anyway! Just a matter of taste I guess!!
haha well im sorry if i offended you. like i said most of my friendslisten
to that kinda thing. i guess a versatile wider range of listening is waay
more interesting. :) yeah me too. i cant beleive i only found her like a
few months ago!! tis crazy!
Such a simple song but but so beautiful. Its just got soul. PJH is such a
talented musician. Been listening to "Stories From the City..." in my car
the last couple of days - just cant keep the volume button down. Thanks for
posting this version
haha good! :P its so refreshing to see people actually liking good music.
most of my friends listen to like rap and r&b music. i honestly cant get my
head around why anyone in their right mind can listen to that! :P
@ FragileLittIeAngel. I know i totally agree. most regard stories from the
city.. sea album to be one of her worst, but i LOVE it!! you know i have
yet to find a PJ Harvey song that i didnt like......
hmm, i believe yss is a big highlight of Stories. It tells the story of a
forbidden(?) love, it's that bad that she doesn't even tell us what he said
(I love you), it's such a sweet, emotional song.
Breathtaking song. I agree, Polly did a lot of better ones, but this one
just has got some magic that no other PJ song has (maybe except White
Chalk). Just incredibly intense and comforting.
Well, I never really like Stories...(Anyway, there are some good songs,
like my favourite One Line). But I feel really confused when after amazing
This Mess We're In comes THIS ;)

of my life.
+Luciano Gutierrez I really like the songs I have heard from David gray actually! :D I haven't seen the live version of that! I will have to check it out and get back to you
+Jo Makenzie Yeah, it's a really deep song. Anyway, I'd like to see a list of some of your favorite albums (cd's) if you don't mind. Take care and chat with you later. Ciao...
+Luciano Gutierrez Aww :( Maybe I will still run into her one day out of some crazy serendipity lol. I will have to just move to the UK I guess! (I THINK she lives there). I have listened to a few peter gabriel songs but not that one yet, I will go check it out. No I haven't! I had no idea there was a movie version, I will have to check that out too! Yeah I know, hopefully PJ harvey won't be offended lol. Sorry PJ! I like you too! <3I just listened to that song! Thank you! I had no idea they made a song together! I like it :)
You should really listen to all the cd's before Hounds, they're quite good. As far as seeing live, it will not happen. She has been a bit of recluse since even before Hounds was released in '85. She did one big tour early in her career and that was it, she never toured again. How amazing is it that some of her early songs were written by her when she was only about 13. Have you ever heard her song with Peter Gabriel "Don't Give Up"? I saw that you like the book Flowers For Algernon. Have you ever seen the 1968 movie based on the book called " Charly"? I suppose it's kinda funny we should probably be discussing PJ Harvey.
+Luciano Gutierrez Yeah when I listen to Kate Bush I feel like I am in a dream world and it feels very personal too because I had so many memories listening to it when I was a kid! My mom doesn't listen to Kate Bush that much anymore but her former husband used to. So in a way I kind of like that shes not that popular in the U.S. because then it would get ruined by being played over a stupid commercial or something lol. Is that hipster of me?? haha. :p I love her sooooo much though. Although I've only really listened to Hounds of love album and a few other songs like This womans work and wuthering heights. One day, I want to see her live if I can. I don't know if she is still touring though...but she definitely won't come to Tennessee! (which is where I live) haha. I also love florence the machine, sometimes bjork, PJ, and tori amos. If you like that feminine sound you might also like A Perfect Circle...a lot of people thinks its lame and its a little dark and melodramatic but it also has that dream world effect for me lol. But it can be a little depressing! I saw that you like coldplay too...I like them as well, but a lot of people also think they are lame too lol. (In America). I guess I am lame haha but I dont care one bit! :D
+Jo Makenzie As great as Hounds is, I don't believe there can be too many people that can say it is their favorite album. If Dark Side wasn't so damn brilliant then Hounds would be my favorite. So I must salute you for having such exquisite taste because The Divine Kate is not for everyone, especially Americans. This album is staggering and mindblowing in just about every aspect that is possible. Before Florence, Bjork, PJ & Tori there was Kate and her groundbreaking music & videos. You could listen to this album for another 30 years and still uncover something new that you didn't hear before or that you didn't get before. Maybe a vocal nuance you missed or an exotic instrumention that you didn't notice was there before. In my opinion she is the greatest female performer that has ever been. If you put it in the context of what she accomplished from '78-'85 as a performer, lyricist, musician, video director, dancer and producer then it certainly makes sense. Every album was better than the last one and certainly no one was doing the idiosyncratic and profoundly original work that she was doing. A true artist and trailblazing pioneer...
+Luciano Gutierrez The hounds of love is my favorite album because my mom used to listen to it :) But I live in America so hardly anyone knows who kate bush is. Good list! :D
+Michaela Sherrard the best tv series out.... series 3 should be coming up soon....BUT best thing is the soundtrack is PJ Harvey and Nick Cave...... check series 1 & 2
You're not listening. YOU were the one trashing American tastes. Didn't say
one negative thing about her or the English in general. Did I not write
that she is English through and through. Did I not call her a genius (which
she most certainly is) Look I get it. No people on earth have created more
wonderful musicians per capita than the British. It's not even close. But
influences go both ways. No man (or woman) is an island even if they were
born on one. Stop stereotyping Americans, its weak
Is it really possible to say a song "sucks" as some sort of absolute
judgment? No! Songs are good to different people for different reasons. So,
unless you have something to add to the positive experience for the rest of
us, shut it. People don't post videos so others can slam them. And...if
that's all you're here for, perhaps there's something wrong with your
face...and I'll be more than happy to rearrange it for you, either way. =)
Do you honestly think that no one in the US likes Polly Jean?? She sells
out tours here. The idea that only euros can have good taste is horse%^.
She's English through and through no doubt but if you don't hear the
American influences in her work you aren't paying attention. The woman is a
bona fide genius. Stop worrying about her detractors and just be thankful
you are around to hear her, and claim her as a fellow Brit.
Is this a more overrated artist than PJ? She s got an average voice, she s
ugly, her songwriting sounds worse than nirvana's b- sides, no more than 3
chords per song and hardly ever. If you think this is great, you haven t
heard enough of female rockers. Check Ghost Dance by Patti Smith, similar
style to this one, but much much better
Don't forget that the UK has it's own "Britneys and Rihannas", they are
just the mainstream and it's fine not to like that. I'm also not a fan of
the mainstream. To insinuate that the US has a monopoly on crap music is
insane. There's plenty of great music being created there everyday. You
just have to dig a little deeper for it.
Captain Beefheart is an obvious one, Dylan for sure, some people claim the
Pixies, and Chrissie Hynde, though I'm not so sure. She sings ABOUT America
often. Stories... has been described as a love letter to New York YOU may
hate us, I don't think she shares your opinion. She sees shades of gray...
Can you please explain (even if it is true, which I highly doubt) why
"pissing" a golden song would mean anything at all in today's world of
horrible, recycled garbage that passes for music? Someone once said
"popularity is the hallmark of mediocrity."
Well whatever it is... in Europether's a bit much more good taste than in
the US. U can't deny this, later even in the US ther's great artists, Tool,
Springsteen, Soundgarden Metallica, PeARL jAM, ANI DI FRANCO all americans
all great!
your not only IGNORANT your a music snob- UK gutter trash- PJ Harvey wuld
probly punch you in your dental dam for sounding so boxed in when it come
to a medium such as music. Your are surely ART-TARDED.
look at tina turner's make up in my top faves--what's love got to do with
it (extended). it's scary!! she looks like a clown. the music is great
tho', so in theory, i do agree with you. :)
His Creulty is a very kind-hearted man that came untrue for me; but i'll
treasure Him in my heart for perennity; it's all God's fault, I shall sue
that bastard
Everybody give it up for Josh Klinghoffer on guitar!
PJ HARVEY live YOU SAID SOMETHING
On a rooftop in Brooklyn One in the morning Watching the lights flash In Manhattan I see five bridges The empire state building And you said something That I've ...
Young in NYC w/ the girl I thought I would love intensely forever. Speaking
over the beautiful noise of the city, & our own giddy inebriation.
Handholding & waiting to cross the street leads to a silent magnetic pull
we just go along with, & we move from the corner, embracing & kissing each
other, as we become the only story in the Naked City. Her face illuminated
by neon. Her breathing the only sound I hear over the sirens & buses. And
her eyes, that I have just left the city to disappear into.
I can't help but watch this over and over. It's an absolutely amazing
performance of a beautiful song! I especially love when she belts out "I
held my breath" at 1:33. Is this from an official DVD release? Amazing
song, amazing album, amazing musician. Love it!
@RaijaEugenia My then one year old daughter was just mesmerised by her; I
bought the CD and played it for her, and put a picture of PJ above her
crib! She's 13 now, and still has a doll called Polly Jean :)
So so wonderful, I've been a fan for so freaking long. INVEST, invest
people before artist like this decide not to make their art publicly
available. Suport and BUY MUSIC!!!
In a world of superheroes
My first thought was:
I'm just an ordinary human
Ordinary ways
I'm just an ordinary human
But I don't feel so ordinary today
