For those of us who live with severe chronic pain such as arthritis, here are the things I do to help manage the pain and ease the associated mental funk and ...
I dispense quite a bit of glucosamine and chondroitin in my Pharmacy and it
seems to help my customers. Steeljan, pretty much all of what you say is
medically established: If you are feeling down, the perception of pain
increases (the ultimate kicking you when you're down) and taking the load
off your joints by getting in water is a great relief. Thankfully, I've yet
to experience arthritis, but I've just put my back out. My beer is still
the best muscle relaxant to hand but not when on duty.
@kondor1001 I hear ya. I've lived with chronic pain all my life and every
year it just keeps getting worse. Had to quit work because of the pain and
my right arm no longer working right. Quick pressure changes are a complete
TKO on me. It's been especially bad this year, wish I could just die and
get it over with often. I put on a cheery face for "SteelJan", lol. Anyway,
I've got 3 beer brewings coming up, lots more beer experiments. Hope you
feel better and can go back to vaping. Hugs, Jan
About 7 years go, I slipped and fell on ice, and landed on my ankle,
dislocating it and shattering it. I have 10 screws and a plate, and
subsequently arthritis followed. Basically bone on bone on one side of the
joint. I take relafin, or its generic daily,so far, no stomach problems. I
also take glucosamine controiten (sp). A lot of dispute if the Gluc. pills
actually work, but the generics at Sams club are fairly cheap, it can't
hurt to take them, so to me it's worth the gamble. Good video
arthritis can be a tough thing to deal with. i know first hand how pain can
affect someone, because i see what my wife goes through! she had a terrible
accident last year, and broke quite a few bones including a couple lower
vertebrae. you mentioned you try to stay away from medication which is a
good thing. i do believe there is an herbal supplement that is anti
inflammatory, but i cant quite remember what it is. you also mentioned
three words that sparked my interest. ROOT BEER RECIPE!!!
The funny thing is, I was using e-cigs for 5 or 6 weeks and due to weather
changes and other physical problems my arthritis pain threw my mind into a
place where I went back to smoking cigs. So, for some unknown reason I
decided to spend the time brewing wine and beer hahaha. Then I saw a name I
knew from the e-cig community making beer lol. Yea, anything to cheer
yourself up. If you do not have a lot of land you can still go out into the
front garden and talk to a neighbour for a while.
Great video. You have hit a subject that affects millions. I have found
that glucosamine sulfate, a natural product works. After the age of 40,
your body slows down the production of glucosamine. Also, bicycling helps
tremendously. My lower back and knees have early stages of pain from past
injuries. The low impact from bicycling is awesome. And if the pain gets
too bad, I use acupuncture. No pain pills for me. After a good bike ride, a
hot shower and a homebrew, I feel like a new man.
@tomroeder Yes, I've been taking glucosamine chondrointin for gosh, 15
years or so, and it definitely does help after taking it over many years.
My kneecaps and knee joints were bone-on-bone after many years of distance
running and 3 surgeries, and the gluc-chond has helped the best so far. I
was born with a full-body skeletal deformity, I look normal, just short,
but all of my bones are made "wrong" ergo the joints don't mate up or
connect "right". Inflamation and pain my whole life.
@immolateus I'm also battling carpal tunnel at the moment, the doc put me
in a wrist brace last week, argh. Here's what I've learned: If you are
using a mouse, either switch hands or get a trackball. A great pain relief
is get two bowls of water, one as warm as you can stand, one as cold as you
can stand. Put your sore hand in one of them for 10 min, then switch to the
other bowl, repeat for 3 times or so. It really takes the pain away and
keeps it gone for an hour or so. Cheers!
@mrhulot101 Great, thanks. I use an external mic, that's why I bought the
Zi8, because of the external microphone jack, the built-in mic is just
so-so, typical of other pocket camcorders. Also, it puts out mov files, so
make sure if you're going with a Windows Movie Maker that it's Windows LIVE
Movie Maker (I found it after I upgraded to Windows 7) because plain old
Windows Movie Maker can't handle these HD mov files, but Windows Live Movie
Maker can. Cheers!
sorry to hear that you've been feeling under the "barometric pressure"
..not feeling good period pretty much stinks, but you seem to have a
positive attitude and that is half the battle! yeah weather changes pretty
much suck as far as pain is concerned...have back problems and have had
back surgery too, Much better now..at least I can walk, but if I fall
asleep flat on my back I basically get "stuck" and it takes me about 5 min
to roll over on my side.
I do not have arthritis or joint problems, but I totally understand the
misery that weather changes can cause. I get migraines often because of the
weather changes, and being peri-menopausal is only making things worse. :(
Oh well. Your videos are all extremely interesting and I've learned a lot
about beer. I'm going to try the brew in a bag method. You're a very
inspirational lady and you have a wonderful personality and a beautiful
smile. Cheers!
Thanks for the update Jan. You brighten my day when ever you put up a
video. Sorry about your pain. I hope it passes for you. I am looking
forward to the root beer video. I have some rootbeer extract and scaled
down the recipe for two bottles. I let them ferment way to long and they
geyserd when I opened them. There was no sugar left and tasted awfull! How
does alcohol not get made? Hmm never thought about that. They were not
alcoholy at all.
I think I am getting arthritis or perhaps repetitive motion disorder in my
hands...very painful cant get away from it (also very noticeable when
seasons change) ...nothing seems to help...grip is not as good as it used
to be...I hate it when tough guys shake my hand with the "manly grip" it
kills my joints...any advice on hands?..my family has a history of joint
issues...terrified of whats to come with age...
It's always good to share these kinds of things, even though it might cast
a shadow on the mood. But people are always looking for support because
they have the same problems. Take my sleep disorder video for instance.
Many people responded and were glad they were not alone. It's about turning
a negative thing into a positive by using it to help others. In turn, by
doing that, you somehow help yourself.
@faroutadventures Ah, great point. I should make a video on my bicycles,
yes, that's another thing I do too. Yes, low-impact exercise is great.
Also, I do take glucosamine-chondroitin everyday, for about 15 years now,
really helps. I also do the cold-water, hot water back & forth dip trick
when a joint is particularly troublesome - pulls the pain right out of it
for a little while. Cheers!
Have you ever considered wheat or gluten to be the culprit? My best friend
has suffered from chronic pain turning into fm for years and recently
eliminated gluten with very positive effects... then discovered she was
also sensitive to peanuts. Eliminating these two from her diet and she
feels better then she ever has her entire life.
@pca1949 No, I never thought of wheat gluten being involved, I thought all
it caused was gastric problems in some people. I'll try it though. I don't
show any sensitivity I know of to peanuts. Seems to me all docs do is give
labels to conditions as if that means anything. FM, arthritis, etc.. no
real help, just labels. Thanks!
@steeljan (2) what I use is not drugs or tablets is udder cream an old work
mate who had 2 operations on his hands informed me about it's a menthol
disinfectant that farmers rub on cows udders I know sounds weird but hey I
find in helps me anyway once again my hats off to u for raising the issue
and cheers
pain sux! I deal with lower back pain and some arthritis in my shoulder and
hips.. and like you, I don't wanna "drug" up with all the prescriptions so
i just try and deal with it.. I need to try some of the home remedy's out
there and see if I can get some relief when it flairs up!!
@steeljan my hats off to u once again,as u said try not to let it get u
down and the weather change is a big thing over the last few weeks my hands
have being playing up I have a mild form of arthritis in both hands docs
say it's from years of working in food processing factories
Cloudy with a Chance of Pain on BBC North West Tonight
It's a mystery that's perplexed people for over 2000 years, but now University of Manchester scientists are on the verge of working out if the weather affects pain ...
