Indiana Jones wannabe says the streets angled north/south at the Pyramid of the Sun are bearing just shy of true north (or geodetic north) by 15 degrees, and the significance of the orientation is still a mystery. However, true north is different from magnetic north (the direction the north end of a compass needle points, corresponding to the Earth's magnetic field lines). Magnetic north varies depending on the Earth's surface and changes over time. For example, from Maine to Florida in the US, the declination currently varies up to 20 degrees. Another example: if you use a compass traveling from Maine to Texas, you will end up with a true north error of over 30 degrees. Spatial variation reflects the irregularities of the flows deep in the Earth; in some areas, deposits of iron ore or magnetite in the Earth's crust contribute strongly to the declination. I wonder if we should be factoring the geological elements into the equation, along with the period we believe they were built and the position of possible corresponding celestial bodies during that period, then reverse calculating the difference, so to speak, instead of using true north? Perhaps the field of archaeology alone is insufficient for unraveling the mystery. Perhaps geology and astronomy might be helpful too? If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be appreciated.
