Sliverliner has it backwards; light that goes directly up is far brighter
and stronger than reflected light. Even light off a mirror is reduced by
10%, and blacktop, grass or dirt do not reflect nearly this much.
Furthermore, the reflective interior shade allows for a lower wattage bulb
to achieve the same level of light on the ground, where it's needed.
Lighting "up" doesn't help anyone on the ground, and unshielded lights
increase glare while reducing safety due to eye pupil constriction.

True they direct more light on the ground, the only problem is that they
don't distribute the light as well and can not light up as large an area.
The reason for light pollution is not the fixture but the light reflected
off the ground into the sky, the Dark Sky Association is a moronic
organization that knows nothing about lighting, yet sadly suckers people ,
companies and the government into all this light pollution BS, it was a
good video 4*s

You are right. The light is reflected from the ground and radiates back up,
but the shield does stop some of the light from going up. Again, I just
like the skycap because it cuts down on the glare.
