Bowling Green Police Department Reproduction Patch Analysis
(C) 2011 Patch Me Thru, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used Under Authorization. This is an analysis of how to correctly identify a counterfeit or reproduction ...
That can more difficult to detect and identify than a vintage reproduction.
One way to uncover a suspect patch is to have a source, such as the actual
department issue patch, to compare the suspect patch too. Usually, there is
some variance in the embroidery, work, a slight color change or some other
detail that is "not as clear" or "definable" as seen on the original. For
example, a lot of cities use their city seal for the center part of the
design. So the details of that seal will usually be "on point", but a
reproduction may have muddled up details, missing parts of a tree or
statue and just not look right as a whole. That's because they are trying
to copy the patch and not the original artwork or digital embroidery file.
In every case we have seen with modern reproductions, there is some
variation, color, size, details, fonts, thread and stitch patterns etc.,
that does not match the original or authentic department issue patch.
Recently, original manufacturers, and this is something that Patch Me Thru,
Inc. also does, are using "copyright decals" that are placed on the reverse
side of the patch underneath the plastic. This is a very good indicator
that the item is an authentic department issue patch. A reproduction will
obviously not have the copyright decal on the reverse side of the patch.
