Hi You might know the answer to this... I live with 3 other friends we all
24-25 and the beer cans we store in the kitchen sometimes attract these red
bodied fruit flys.. (i say fruit flys cause they look identical to them
except for there pinkish red bodies..(sorry cant explain fully) any idea
what these are theyn seem to be VERY attracted to beer cans ...open wine or
miced drinks they tend to stear away when we put side by side on counter...
but i mean i cracked a beer other day there were thr
Actually, many of the fruit flies will lite on the plastic without entering
the trap. Many more can escape. Dangle a sticky fly strip that uncurls out
of the cartridge -- cartridge down. With scissors, cut off the cartridge,
and ease the strip randomly onto a disposable paper plate. A cheap paper
bowl works fine too. Toward the center, drop a thumbnail sized piece of
tomato, banana, apple or onion Check later to see the magic. For permanent
use, use a bottle cap of apple cider vinegar as bait.
every summer my condo is prone ot having fruit flies--without the fruit!
this summer i tried white vinegar with a dash of dishwashing liquid and
soon the flies drown in it. that combined with a TIGHTLY SEALABLE kitchen
trash can has helped miraculously.
Catch them, filter them out and then... FEED THEM TO MY NEON TETRAS!!!! And
then... and then! SELL THEIR BABIES TO THE FISH STORE!!! MU HA HA HA HA!!!
Yeah, it sounds rather dramatic when you put it that way...
I just killed a couple, and another one flew right past my monitor, and
disappeared before I could get it. These little sods won't let me drink my
cider in peace. I'm going to try this, so thanks for the tip.
@rapidzmyrapidz DOOD....i came hope to an infestation that was estimated to
be 5 or 7 generations deep (they breed fast). BLEECH in a spray bottle
kicked ass and took them right out the air.
Those aren't fruit flies - they're fungal gnats. Fruit flies are largish
flies that sting fruit while it is still on the tree and their maggots
develop inside the fruit and ruin it.
Apple cider vinegar, tried it with great sucess, had a jar in every room in
my house cause they were every where. Left the jar out by a small light at
night, catch them 24 hrs day.
I've use a similar trick, but with dish soap instead of the plastic. If you
put just a drop or two of dish soap into the vinegar, the fruit flies will
sink instead of float.
If you have any drains near where you see fruit flies periodically pour a
pot or kettle of boiling water in them. They also seem to magically appear
out of beer bottles.
Any food particles hatch those puppies! We get a lot from our kitchen drain
so we dowse the drain with bleach, seal it, and let it sit over night. No
more pests, at least until you get another piece of fruit. Geez, I thought
we were going to see "Mosters Inside Me" footage. Thanks for the tip, it
looks like the banana trick works better than the vinegar. I've used the
vinegar and didn't see a lot of trapped flies, so I'm going to try the
banana next outbreak.
Oh my gosh what a great idea! I'm in the dorms and i have my own room but i
share a kitchen. Well our oven had to be replaced and i only came home to
wash clothes so i didn't go to the kitchen for 3 weeks... I started
noticing some little flies... She had left a full trash can in the kitchen!
So i had the battle the fruit flies. Wish i had known this trick! Probably
would have been much quicker than my method of swatting them
Thanks for the feedback! Well, next time you don't have to swat! (o: It may
take a couple of times (a couple days each) to get out all of them, but
it's faster than swatting and no sprays. Oooo - another thing - just make
sure the bagged goodies are all that's enticing the fruit flies - no
distracting melon rinds or something!
@LivLikeNo1Else Thank you! Glad you liked the tip! I hate 'spraying' bugs
especially around food...this took care of two things at once...recycled a
bag that would normally get tossed in the trash and fruit fly problems....
(o: Thanks for watching! Best Blessings, Donna
I am SO glad this worked well for you! I use this trick almost every night
durring the summer and when I am canning fruit. It's nice not to have to
spray anything around small pets and kids too! Thanks for the kind
encouragement!! Best Blessings! Donna
@princesstootsweet3 ~ !!! Okay, THAT is an awesome idea! Thank you for
sharing that! Yep, the "pepper-smell" can hover for days...what a great FIX
you've found and THANK YOU for sharing it! (o: Best Blessings! Donna
I also use those bags for chopping hot peppers :) That way I don't get the
stingy, stinky pepper residue on my good plastic gloves and I don't get it
on my fingers! No more tears :D
