WJHG / WJDM TOWER COLLAPSES
First, a little history on WJHG TV, Panama City Florida. WJHG first went on the air as WJDM, it became known as Wait Just A Damn Minute,(WJDM) because it ...
The downtown building on Harrison Avenue was occupied by a bank before
WJHG-TV moved in.
WJHG-TV moved from that downtown location to the beach location on November
22, 1968. It was on a Friday night.
Two weeks before the move, WJHG's chief engineer Billy Carpenter, along
with Pearly Eply and this commenter, established the micro-wave path from
the Youngstown transmitter site to the new building on the beach.
The night of the move, right outside the downtown building on Beach Drive,
was parked a large moving van.
WJHG-TV was an NBC affiliate.
While "The Tonight Show" ran on the network, Billy Carpenter and 4 other
engineers, myself included, were unhooking all the equipment, except... one
of the two 2" quad machines (VTR). We had prebuilt commercial breaks onto a
2" reel of tape, so that provided a little extra moving time that night and
some extra time after sign-on the next morning.
After sign-off, at midnight, we five engineers finished loading the
equipment into the van. We headed to the new building we called "The Beach
Building".
The equipment was unloaded and put into place. Then we began hooking at all
back together.
We had until 6AM sign on.
The 5 of us worked through the night.
At 6:00 AM CST, on the Saturday morning of November 23, 1968, WJHG-TV began
broadcast operations from the building located at 8195 Front Beach Road.
So many memories from that time and that place.
It was a privilege and pleasure to have been a part.
Thank you Billy Carpenter.
And thank you Ron Jones. Appreciate the post.
