How to remove paint from motorcycle / dirt bike plastics - xr 600
These are 1991 xr600 plastics. I know I could just buy new plastics, but I like to restore late 70s dirt bikes. Plastics for these restorations are hard to come by, ...
i bought some plastics for me derbi senda and the paint is so shit will i
be able to paint them again in a proffesional painter or the paint will
scratch?
you can buy plastic specific paint, however in my experience on a motorbike plastics, the first stack will see you perfect paint job ruined! However if these plastics are all you can get your hands on then go for it! Just try paint stripping on a small section of the plastics first (preferably the backside) to make sure it will not eat the plastic away. hope this helps.
Hello, i have a 99 ktm 200 exc dirtbike which I'd like to paint white since
plastics do come in this color. This paint stripper would be used on brand
new stock plastics and then I would apply primer, then paint?
no you will not have to strip anything from new plastics, only if they have already been painted. I would advise having a chat to your local paint shop to find out the best method for painting. I use a plastic primer, and plastic specific paint for my projects.
damn that looked like 3 or 4 layers of paint there I just got a yz85 that
was rattle canned black and I found some paint stripper spray and sprayed
it on let it set for a minuet and it all cam off with the garden hose but
it was a pour paint job that was very thin
check your timings not set to early had the same crack in my case 3 times
after i had it bored out turned out they set the it to early so if it fired
backwards that crack would happen from the kickstart ramming forward i
advanced the timing a bit and it never cracked or fired backwards again
HI nice job, i have a yamaha xt600 and i want do that, but in my country i
dont found plastidip to sell :(((( i thin you should do that to your rims
and other parts of plastic in your bike.
Motorcycle Fairing Repair on abs plastic - Paint Part 4
Prepping, primer and painting the plastics. Painting the fairings after all the prepping. Then I'll be heading off to my friend's paint shop to shoot the final clear coat ...
HELP HELP HELP HELP !!!! can u please help me im doing the same thing to my
zx6r 2003 b4 primer etc, if there are stone chips and kind of deep chunks
missing in the fairing not that deep so there is a hole or gone though to
the other side do i just body fill it or do something before and after body
filling what grit do i start off with to get all smooth then will i have to
use another grip to get it smoother and is it best to wet sand that, its
please look at my next bit i write cant all fit on
before starting any project clean with dawn dish washing soap, no scents or
lotions. Sand the effected area to remove paint, just along the repair.
Rough is better now. Blow off then clean with glass cleaner no scents or
lotions. Paint could be contaminate to plastic welding. Then proceed with
repair. Sand with 80 down to 320, clean as above and primer, 2x's. If U mix
your primer and it uses a hardner use a flex additive. I use flex additive
whenever I use a hardner. I use urethane paints
@CaptSaveAHo3 A 2 stage color is more difficult, but take your time with
it.. Spray the base coat like you would normally to get maximum coverage. I
believe the base is a silver. Then with the top coat, you would want to
spray light even layers. Important thing here is to make the color as
uniform as possible. Any excess over lap will cause dark and light spots.
Keep adding layers until you get the correct color. The more layers you
add, the darker it becomes so don't over do it.
Do you wet and dry between the layers or do you just spray straight on
after the paint gets tacky? Also I realise the finish you get from a can is
not as good as a spray gun (I guess this is why you left that for your
friend to finish), but is it less of an issue with the primer and
basecoats? I.e. what you have shown here, meaning the clearcoat is what
makes the difference. Or is it that you're just awesome at spraying with a
can and then got lazy with the last step? :P
@Beyvids4you if I was you would wet sand first before applying any clear
coat. Dust and bugs are easy to sand off. Use 4000 grits and then spray
another 2-3 base paint. 10-15mins in between coats (depending on weather
condition!) after final base coat has been applied wait an hour or 2 for
the paint to cure and dry. Should be ready for clear coat next. Do 4-5
coats, wet sand again 1500 or 2000 grits and then 2-3 clear coat.
@cheesyzombie I usually let the primer dry to sand down any imperfections.
Then when the paint hits, then I'll just let it get tacky between layers. I
tried doing the clearcoat with a can. It does get fairly good results but
takes a lot of sanding to get rid of orange peel. My friend said he can do
an orange peel free clear coat so I took on his offer. The paint layers
don't need to be 100% only if the clear coat is good.
if you wanted a show room finish you should have gotten your mate to mix
your green coat with your clear coat this dose a few things one the paint
has a 3 demenshionel look were it dosent just clearing the top number 2
just clearing the top will over time damige your base coat and it will go
dull and nothing you can do to fix it as doing it half and half clear coat
I am stuck I used rustoleum put aroun 4-6 base coats on and decided for
protection i will use a 2 part clear but should i first wet sand the base
coat . then clear it. or should i wet sand the base then lay another base
coat down then hit it with the clear.. I am having issues with dust and
bugs . should i worry abot that in the final clear and the buff
its plasic not metal please bare that in mind & for the primer is it a
white primer if so what colour if u understand what i mean or what primer
were u using the colour & when primeing, between the 2 coats what wet sand
paper grit to use and why type of sand paper is best to use on the fairing
what did u use wood sand paper , metal sand paper etc thanks
Great work, this will help me a lot in repairing my rc51 I have a few
question if you don't mind. 1) Is regular bondo fine to be applied to an
untreated fairing? maybe rough sand before hand? 2) Is it a good idea to
sand between primer coats and paint coats? 3) Should any sort of
plasticizer/flexiblizer be added to the clear coat? Thanks!
hey man i seem to have trouble finding the right answer for this. I have no
idea whether to spray my clear coat after or before using my Rubbing
Compound? which step is the best way to help the new paint stand out a
little better. When should i use the rubbing compound? if i can get an
answer from you. the sooner the better
I got a question I can't seem to find the answer on the web but I got a
used zx-10 and the previous owner spray-bombed the tail section black and
the front fender green but didn't sand the plastics is there a safe way to
remove the spray paint and keep the plastics underneath safe I was thinking
about paint thinner ?
Hey man. You're videos are awesome and very informative. I recently have
just repaired my front fairing using your method. I just need to sand it
down and paint it. How many paint cans and primer will i need to cover the
front fairing. I really don't care about the backside. Just the front.
Again, thanks.
How to Vinyl Wrap Your Motorcycle (White Carbon Fiber)
I got over some of the basics in this video. It takes a LONG time to do each panel, so it wasn't practical to film it all. I hope you get the concept of it from watching ...
How much overall did this cost and how much vinyl do you need?
I'm planning on doing the same, white carbon, or doing gold, chrome, or
something super stupidly shiny to make the bike look like it should be in
Dubai, maybe Red Chrome?
Primer 94 does help vinyl stick in the tight corners but i would not
recommend it.
Modern day wrap is made to stretch and stay where you put it, specially if
you post-heat. And when it comes to taking off your wrap the primer is
going to stay and your going to go through hell getting it all off.
