Highway patrol officers used a big rig to catch offenders on I-40 in Knoxville. The purpose of utilizing the big rig for patrol was to catch texters red handed.
Well it's not. Police glance into vehicles all the time to check for distracted drivers and they end up just fine. Texting while driving is by far the most dangerous form of distraction that can be done on the road and causes more deaths than any other type of distraction. So stop complaining about how police do their jobs and just DONT TEXT AND DRIVE. It's as simple as that.
But....... how can you prove they are texting? They can merely be dialing a
phone number. And you cannot take their phone from them either. It's pretty
much your word against theirs and up to the judge to decide and it will be
dropped because there is no physical evidence the driver was texting. The
truck is just a waste of tax dollars.
+Joseph Runner Nice. Should have that here in MO, no hand-held device usage for anything. Should move to hands free bluetooth instead for talking though. But even if you ban it, it should still be enforced. Like say if you're seen breaking this law you should get a ticket for that instead of needing another reason say speeding to give you that ticket. But having a semi on the police force would be a waste of money. But it would be good to have variety of vehicles in police arsenal to catch those raised up vehicles who might text. Better to be safe than sorry, and ensure the law is enforced.
+alantonix213 There's no need for that. All we have to do is ban hand-held devices for any reason. Period. This includes talking, texting, looking at a map, Shazaming a song on the radio, etc. Been that way in my home state of NJ for over ten years.
+Tennessee5006 You can prove they were using their phone by pulling the defendants phone records if the prosecutors were to prove whether or not you were using your phone. So you have an eye witness who accused you of using your phone, and depending on the state your phone records can be pulled to prove if you were or weren't using your phone while you were driving. Truck may seem like a waste of tax dollars but at least it will keep your insurance costs from rising, plus its one reckless driver off the road...am I right? :D. So having a trucker cop would be good to keep you safe from those who text and drive. :D
In New Jersey, where I live, it's illegal to use any type of handheld device while driving for ANY reason. So there's no question on what the driver was doing with the phone. If the officer sees a phone in your hand, you are breaking the law. It would be better off if all states had it this way. Most countries around the world have it this way. The US is one of the only countries in the world that does not have a national ban on handheld devices by all drivers. I wrote to my congressman proposing a national ban on handheld devices by all drivers.
