thanks for the video it really helps!! this new engine (2009 plus) is much
more cramped than the older one. i have a matrix that is the same
mechanicals as the corolla. i will try this soon with some synthetic gl4.

I have the same car in an 07. Mine was not nearly as noisy, and was
accompanied by some gear clash. From the sound of it on the video, you may
be facing synchro failure, meaning a complete rebuild. I have delayed the
problem in my transmission by switching from the standard gear fluid which
is 75/80 or something to 90/140 heavy duty synthetic specifically labeled
for the rear diff on light duty commercial trucks like postal vehicles or
pickups WITHOUT friction modifiers. It may not work, but it would be a
cheap, temporary solution and hopefully give you some time to prepare for a
complete rebuild or replacement. Just be mindful... When first driving the
car after start up, shift early and at low speed, the fluid will be thick
and needs time to warm up.

+dirtybilly09 i definitely recommend using a gl-4 fluid over a gl-5 especially for synchro issues. I put in some gl-5 recently and I could tell it was HELL on the synchros. put in some gl-4 and its smooth as silk now.

got the new clutch and flywheel in. noise is still the same. transmission seemed in perfect shape when I felt the tolerances in the bearings. I suspect it's wear in the cv axles contributing to the noise although normal enough not to bother replacing at this point. Also used 2/3 redline mt-90 and 1/3 pennzoil syncromesh. I can shift into all gears so easily now. Before I had to slow down to under 5 mph to get into 1st and now I can shift at 15 mph now. It's an amazing difference.My clutch pedal feels gritty now though. Think I need to bleed it.
