Certified Sisterlocks Technician UK (London/Essex) Talks Unravelling Ends. Some Tips! #123
Has your mature locks been randomly unravelling from the tip towards the base of your locks? Then watch this... Natural Hair Stylist UK Based Sisterlocks® ...
Melissa you are absolutely right. The hair that does this often is 4a or 3c
hair meaning it has not only a looser curl pattern but often is a bit
silkier and has a high pliability (snaps back to a coil very quick and
totally)
I have this kind of hair. it never can be completery locked and sealed at
the ends and some of my locks will not lock. That is just the way it is and
will probably always have open and coiled ends. If the hair is unraveling
there a few things you want to be very careful about doing:
1. Two strand twist the hair that is loose if you like, and some use lemon
juice and water or aloe vera juice and water. These things help to raise
the cuticle a bit so the twisted hair sticks better.
2. Be judicious with the use of oils or conditioner. I don't use these
unless I have no other options and my hair is dying.
I have open ends to my hair and they are very coily and have been from the
beginning.
The silkier your hair, often the longer it takes to fully mature or lock
and it may NEVER lock totally. Be ok with this.
Locking is NOT a hairstyle it is a hair state. A consultant can lead the
client to locking and create the grid and locking superstrands but she can
only marginally influence what you hair will naturally do.
Due to my own curl pattern which is looser in the back and coily in the
front my sisterlocks are almost 1/3 shrunk and crinkly no matter what and
the ends are coily and loose. When I want a neater look I wet my hair then
put them on hard rollers. When I want neater ends I twist each end
carefully. this only lasts until the next wash.
IF your hair's ends are increasing in unraveling (meaning it is going up
the superstrand, that is often indicative that the locking was not started
with a R4. All locking patterns should start with a Reverse 4 and end with
a Reverse 4 to limit unraveling and slippage.
If you wish, if your hair is not very long, you can have those with
creeping unraveling combed down and relocked IF the locks are still soft
and not mature.
If the locks are mature , that is another issue.
CONTRIBUTORS to unraveling:
1. Looser natural curl pattern and challenged choice made in the actual
locking pattern. (I rarely use the 3 pattern on really loose hair because
it WILL SLIP)
2. Failure to backcomb or create a beginning knot to rest the rest of the
lock on as it progresses
1 and 2 are pretty rare.
3. Excessive use of conditioner or oils, these products create slip, slip
SLIDES, sliding hair comes undone. Looser type textures slip more
4. use of heat, heat not only damages but also straightens. As a newbie and
for the first 2 years, heat should not be a part of your lock regimen
5. Use of lifting color, again this straightens, straight hair slides.
Any combo of the 5 makes the problem worse.
if your locks are mature and previously you did not have unraveling issues,
you can fine braid the loose part and eventually the shed hair will wind
around it and it will lock again.
If your locks are not mature and you want a neater look, then twist or even
braid if you can the loose hair and ask your consultant to do reverse 4 all
the way on your hair and to be vigilant for tension issues because using
reverse 4 can create bunching if the tension is not consistent
Try to find a consultant and stick with her if she is willing to try to
work towards your own vision for your hair.
If you switch consultants immediately review her work (don't wait) the main
cause of bunching besides improper technique is varied tension, this
usually happens when more than one person has worked on the same locks and
they have different tensions.
I installed micro locs about a week ago and I think I've watched every one
if your vids to gather all of the information I could before I got started.
It was a TEDIOUS job LOL and I was just about in tears, but I got through
it. I'll email you a picture in a little while.
Awesome attitude!!!! I absolutely enjoy your videos and I take heed to your
pointers. I was once passionate when I was owner of a hair braiding
business with many faithful clients so I recognize passion.(((smile)))
thanks again!!!
I love watching your videos. I have no intention of getting locs but I love
the information you provide and find myself transfixed to your videos. Keep
up the good work!!!
Hello Hello from New York! Love your videos. I've had my locks for almost
four years and I can honestly say it is a way of life and not a lifestyle.
it is life altering(for the better) decision and I can never see myself
going back to twisting, braids, perm, hot-combing(insert here any other
torturous things I've done in the pass).Sisterlocks challenges one to
accept the beauty of our hair, it gives freedom from commercialization that
many of us fell pray to. It must be experienced, when ready
I will definitely be telling my mum to go to Mel and Hug' when she needs to
get her new growth sisterlocks sorted out. I have loose afro hair and had
my hair done at Bespoke hairstyles last month. I can honestly say it was
the most positive hair styling experience I've ever had except for when
mummy used to do my hair. It was like being with family but Mel and Hug'
have so much knowledge and experience with and about our hair no old wives
tales here just fact and fabulous styling.
I sooooo appreciate all the info you share. Makes me feel much more
informed and empowered. My only wish is I were in the LDN area to have
direct access to services! :-) (in the meantime, i'm still searching for
the perfect consultant and time to install some SLs.)
