I took it to the dealership and after some persuasion they stayed with the problem until it got fixed. Speed sensors are only a few hundred dollars to replace - the transmission is closer to $4k. The gas tank recall was issued late last year, with notices going out to the owners this month. They mentioned that the replacement part for the gas tank would be available Q3 of this year.

That is interesting Alan. My 2008 is doing the same thing right now and I took it to AAMCO thinking it was the transmission. Where did you take your car and when was there a gas tank recall? I'm so disgusted and thinking about trashing the car if it's the transmission.

did you find out what was causing this problem? my sister has a 07 mkx and it just started doing this last night. it only has 30000 miles

Speed sensor. Have not had a problem since. Going into the dealer when they get the fix in for last week's gas tank recall.

Speed sensor was damaged. It was fixed under warranty. Hope this helps.
