We are wheat and canola farmers in Australia and love this video! My two boys (7 & 9 years) think the machinery is fantastic! Well done - nice machines. We love how you don't stop to unload - we do that too!

+Joanne Knobel Thank you for the comments. I'd love to visit Australia some day! The less we stop the more efficient we are, so we do what we can to keep the machines moving.

+lepaul26 A machine first goes down the rows and removes most of the tassels but it doesn't get them all, and all of them must be removed. Farmers/seed companies hire kids to walk the rows or ride in baskets on machines pulling by hand any missed tassels. It is soaking wet work in the morning from the dew on the corn and hot work in the afternoon sun. Here is a link with pictures...//www.hollowaysdetasseling.com/how.htm
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Vwayjyn36yM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAB4/deGn4u9zz0E/photo.jpg?sz=64
+GlenironPa Wow, a lot of work then ?How are the pollen tassels romoved ? Also a machine ? And the male row ?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
The missing rows were the "male" rows. Two different types of corn are planted to get the end product. The pollen tassels are removed from the "female" corn so they don't self pollinate. The male rows pollinate the female rows to get the "hybrid" seed. After pollination the male rows are removed so its seed isn't mixed with the hybrid seed.

Picking up Down Corn with Bean Head

In fall 2012 in Nebraska after winds knocked down the corn ears, we used a bean pick up head to harvest otherwise not harvestable corn.

It worked well at the time. Corn was $7.00 per bushel, so it was worth the time to pick up from the field. However, this was hard on the combine. Too much dirt! Plus, we had to screen the corn four times to separate the corn from the dirt. Still had 5% FM. We picked up anywhere from 20 to 40 bushels on various fields.

How well did this work for you guys? I've never had to do this myself but I've heard of others doing it before. The worst that I had was the cobs were to low to the ground and the head couldn't grab them, so I used my bean platform on them.

In 4 wheel drive, low range (which is what you use in the field when harvesting) they top out at around 6 mph. We usually harvested between 3 and 5 mph, depending on conditions. 4 to 4.5 mph most of the time. In the morning when things are dewy and damp, you have to take it easy or the wet leaves, etc. will tend to clog the works. Later in the day when things dry out you can crank it up.

@creamyfilling102 They do travel at a pretty good clip. The seasoned operator will slow down when needed and speed up depending on the stand of corn.

I have to say that what you said about instillworkin channel is dead on. She does her homework and is always studying both new and old ways of doing things to help all of us with a lot of things that come with gardening and preserving your harvest. From making her own ice cream sandwiches to shelling peas with a redneck ringer washer. You are both an great asset to the youtube community. Nice looking corn by the way! You were doing some serious shucking to get it that clean and ready to can.
https://gp3.googleusercontent.com/-6eA4oQEQgx0/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/JCRCzRYuygY/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
Since I had the row spacing so wide, I felt like I needed to make up for it by doubling up on top of each row. I'm glad I did. This gave me a lot more corn, and it was much easier to spray with the wider middles. I might do it this way next year. I agree Tim, she's one of the best. I hope things got back to normal for you. We've been having below normal temps here, so the craziness continues. Thanks friend.

thanks again, saw some info on aeroponics site that was interesting. A friend raises heirloom dent corn using hills. Its hugely tall and the 'coons are too fat to climb all the way up to get the corn. Its dent corn so really just better for hominy and grits then anything else. Can go as high as 12foot. bye gotta go look and see whats new on the kratky method; send any extra rain to my friends in TX

You're right Paula. Things that were ok back then don't cut it anymore. We've learned how to do things a little better and safer. When my wife and her mom are canning, I've tried to offer a few suggestions that I'd seen in videos...things to do differently. As you might guess, they are NOT interested in my suggestions or opinions. So, I go on outside, and focus on growing more. :)

Go to "littlegreenhouse" (dot) com. Click on Heater Calculator. They show 2 layers of 6mil polyethylene (plastic) with the blower having the same heat loss as 4mm polycarbonate. But the polycarb does have a 10yr warranty. I think the decision whether or not to use it would come down to final cost and the overall GH design. Obviously, it's a good option.

Judging from all of the comments, imstillworkin is highly thought of when it comes to canning and her other videos. She does a great job of explaining things. I try to clean off the silks pretty good so that the ladies don't have to worry with them. With so much corn all at once, they had their hands full. Thank you sir.

That is a real good harvest of corn...It looks to me that the double row on the corn worked great for you....I have some purple hulls and blackeye peas double rowed right now that are doing great....Great points about the canning videos....Imstillworkin is an amazing cook and great teacher....Thanks...

Thanks. If you have problems in the corn, my first course of action would be trapping, early and often. And if that didn't get rid of them....bring out the hard stuff. Pepper Spray. I make it with the hottest peppers I can find, and the critters don't mess with anything that gets sprayed.

Gravel and grass sounds like a good reason to build some raised beds above it. You're right about Susan. That is one very determined lady. She seems capable of doing just about anything, and successfully. If I can ever help you, just holler. Thanks.

This corn looks fantastic. Our daughter is still struggling with her corn. Much better this year than last year, but we really need to find a good source of manure for our garden. Breaking a large garden out of native soil is a lot of work! :)

I have trapped a few of them in my life, and avoided many live and dead ones in the road. Trapped a few in South Hampton Co. VA too. When I was a boy we had something eating our sweetcorn, so my dad set a trap, and low and behold it was a skunk.

Wow that corn looks super, what is the ph of your soil? My corn plants don't look good at all. I will try next year to get some corn looking like yours. I think my problem this year was the soil, I need to look at how to prepare the soil.
https://gp6.googleusercontent.com/-7jn968FkZAY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/7gwhaGqosDA/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
Knock on wood. They bother everything around here. Only hot peppers are exempt. When they started eating my tomatoes I nearly gave up gardening. Also they are death to your car. I have hit 8 deer in the last 15 years and two this year.

Thanks. I had some peaches n cream for dinner. We have a decent amount in the pantry and freezer. I'm looking forward to growing it again next year too. If you have a question, just ask her. She'll be glad to help.

If you planted 2 types of corn adjacent to each other at the same time, that could be your problem. Corn crosses easily. And unlike other vegetables, it shows up immediately because what we eat is the seed itself.
