+Seth Rollins so you're saying that if I go onto the field and mock a christian ritual or have a pseudo bat mitzvah or come out, kneel on a rug and have prayers then end the whole ceremonies screaming praise Allah! As I throw a flaming AK-47 in the middle of the field. Is that not offensive to a entire people? How is this different?
+cnw8891 Who cares about recognition. Native American culture isn't quite as narcissistic as ours.Did you grow up on a reservation. Do you identify with Native American culture? Do you know the rituals and find them as spiritual as maybe one of the Abrahamic religions? If not then whether you are offended or not does not matter.
+Seth Rollins No there isn't. Northern Europeans committed conscious genocide when taking North America from the Native American tribes. I think that as a society the United States we got to better by them now.And yes I've seen people with face paint my whole life, but I haven't seen them try to represent a whole culture and demean them with fake rituals, militarizing a culture that wasn't truly savage or entice a "SCALP EM'" chant. If I walked down the street with black face that would be racist. How is this not?
When does the Seminole tribe ever get attention and recognition other than when they are honored by Florida State athletics? My great grandmother was 100% Creek. Creek branched off and became Seminoles. I'm definitely not offended by this. Quite the opposite.
It is not the name, it is the use of red face, making up of FAKE rituals, use of the tomahawk, and many other things. Nearly all sociologists and every other native tribe find this offensive. The reason the Seminols allow it is because it is mutually beneficial monetary wise.
Does that mean that the militarizing of the mascot is not insulting? Does that take out the racist undertones of the whole performance? You are taking a whole culture and making a profit off of it. The famous tomahawk chant is terrible, and historically inaccurate, they do fictitious war chants. Doing a Tomahawk motion and yelling "Scalp 'em" is not in good taste, honoring a culture, or even funny. It is blatantly racist.Just because some Seminole's are okay with FSU and its mascot does not mean all Native Americans are fine with it or even all people of the Seminole Tribe. Plus there is a direct connection between the Seminole tribe, one of the more successful Native American tribes in the US in terms of casinos and their gambling, and how being tied to FSU helps them economically. This "relationship" can be seen as partly, if not majorly, an economic decision with the Seminoles in a way selling their image for profit.Would say the, this is not real, University of LaLaLand Diaras, a pre-colonization African tribe, and have a person in blackface running around doing bull crap rituals with bone weapons not be racist? Even if they had permission from the Diaras? I strongly insist you watch the video from my last post.
+cnw8891 No it does not honor a tribe. It objectifies them. It mocks tradition with pseudo rituals claimed as authentic. It dehumanizes them as an object of entertainment. The use of red face paint is equivalent to the use of black face. The university of Illinois claimed to be "honoring" Native Americans with their Chief Illini yet Native American activists disagreed and fought to have the mascot removed. If the people who are the subject of objectification feel disrespected and dehumanized as a result of anything than it is in itself wrong. I am pretty sure I know what I am talking about and no Washington Post article is going to make me think differently. I have read numerous article from Native American opposition, taken a specific sociology class on Sociology and Sports, which covered the controversy of the Native American Mascot. My school offers some resources on the subject, I don't know if you care enough to prove yourself wrong or even watch a video but here it is. +Mike Bennett clearly you're the dumbass since you're missing the point!! A bunch of white kids shouldn't be imitating native Americans with a war chant, it's just wrong in my book
+Mitchell Baxter So you don't think it's remotely a problem that a bunch of white kids are screaming for a Native American who is symbolised and made less? Florida is a state full of racist assholes.
+Sonic XX Fucking whiny, hypersensitive pussy. Try going to the Seminole Indian reservation in Florida, where the Seminoles wear Florida State gear, and love the mascot BECAUSE THEY DESIGNED HIM.
