Focus RS500 vs Boxster on the track - Auto Express

Both cost around £35000, one is a rear-wheel drive sports car the other a hot hatch, but which is fastest? If you have £35000 to spend on a performance car ...

Recently bought a Boxster. Had to be the 3.2 S because it's quicker than your Focus RS's etc. and it's actually designed to be a sports car, not an everyday car on steroids. The Focus RS is a hatchback and in essence a boy-racer. They belong to two different markets. Yes people say the Boxster is for those who can't afford a 911 but I disagree. Even if I could afford a 911 I still wouldn't buy one. Great fun and love the sound! Roll on summer so I can drop the top down :)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Fy8EWFzEywA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACo/D2zQ7msck50/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Fabio Fernandes great car but get the IMS seal checked out asap, my 2002 3.2 tip was my pride and joy until IMS failure destroyed the engine. This is a well known design fault so prevention is essential.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
The Focus St Mountune is faster than the standard Focus RS. Why the RS is 80 kg heavier they said it has 300 bhp it doesn't, one magazine tested one it only had 280 bhp. The Mountune St is meant to have 256 bhp but it doesn't also 280 bhp. So you got the power but the RS weighs more
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ian Townsend The early maps that the Focus RS came with was poor on power, but they (Ford) cured that with the latest CJ map. A tuned ST will keep up with the RS until you hit 100mph or so, then the extra power of the RS will prevail. The ST engine with the smaller K04 spools way faster though, and feels more responsive at low revs. Both great cars.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
What most of you dont get, when comparing these two cars, are that its still a Ford Focus. Its still a hatchback with loads of space in the trunk and a useable backseat. Its still a Ford Focus with fairly good fuel comsumption and low tax/Insurance. And it beats a modern Porsche, with RWD? Well, call me silly, but thats just an achievement right there. The Porsche was never built to be a hot hatchback - it was built to be a sportscar.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Iain Murray Cool car for sure, hope you enjoy it! :) Well, the ecoboost is not quite as tuneable, im afraid. The stock turbo exhaust housing is quite restrictive, so even if you go hybrid with all the extra bits you still will be limited to around 300hp. And I dont like the looks of it that much. But thats me, im sure its a cracking car. If I would go for a newer car in the ford performance family, I would go for the Fiesta ST or wait for the Focus RS, depending on budget.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ciz8de2NEzU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAE8/WHcJnfIqDYg/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jakob Ericson Mine's the 2008 with the same 2.5 5 cylinder turbos as the RS, so they do like a drink! How does the eco boost compare the the RS? I've been temped by a 2010 ST estate, just because quick estates are cool :)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Iain Murray Wow, I averaged 30+ in my 2010 ST i had Before the RS, but I guess its all about driving style. To be fair, it was not that much urban but mostly commute (60km/day). No flames in my RS, Im keeping the cat for now ;)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ciz8de2NEzU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAE8/WHcJnfIqDYg/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jakob Ericson Well done with your fuel economy mate - I have a stage 3 ST and never see over 22mpg with mixed driving! But it does spit flames when pushing on, so I try to look at the smiles per gallon rather than mpg :)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Iain Murray As for fuel economy, I average 29mpg, and thats mixed driving. I dont drive like a retard but I dont stay on WOT whenever its possible. Its not great, but its still good for what it is.I cant answer for the road tax in the UK, but in Sweden its around 220£, which is not bad at all.But I hear you :)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ciz8de2NEzU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAE8/WHcJnfIqDYg/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jakob Ericson You won't be seeing good fuel economy in the Focus or cheap road tax - 22mpg (if you're lucky) and £485 road tax! They are at least reliable though :)

In every one of these cars most of us watching this would have died if we had driven like he did. Yet, I could drive my 8th gen civic to its limit and did for years without one incident. So, the key is finding a car with the controlability of a civic, but the performance of these cars.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tw6OeQnHm64/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAA0/6K9zGhIlIyc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Lea CNot in the turns though; there is no reason a Lotus should be fishtailing in a turn when my Civic never did. A proper corner entry will not require hammering the gas in the middle of a turn, only mild throttle to sustain speed. Actually, I think my Civic had more power than the Rover powered Lotus. My 190 Hp Celica certainly does, and yet it is clearly more controllable. I think they have no excuse.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+DjRjSolarStar The performance is what makes them dangerous. You can drive near enough any low powered car flat out everywhere and be safe. Also you couldn't get a fwd civic to match these rwd cars in terms of performance, and nor should you want to.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tw6OeQnHm64/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAA0/6K9zGhIlIyc/photo.jpg?sz=64
God, not the Rover engine in the Elise.....fucking piece of shit engine. They should have reviewed the 2ZZ model.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ymvy_MDrVFQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAFI/POqUj9LWxNY/photo.jpg?sz=64
+DjRjSolarStar So avoid the earlier base models that have the ROVER 1.8 K series engine right ?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
I have always wondered why Honda would use a 2 liter engine in a sport car when they could have easily used a similar engine with a 2.4 liter capacity to increase torque and power overall without having to rev the engine to 8000 rpm?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+umaxen01 It was the most powerful engine per liter at the time and still is for any street car under 100k. You can also boost that engine to insanity with the stock block. Reving high is good the higher the revs the less torque you need for the same amount of Hp. My question is why did they not have force induction on it as like a sportier package or something?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+umaxen01 because of tax In 90's 2000cc (actually around 1990cc) > 350 USD (1USD=100JPY) a year.  over 2000 > 650 USD a year. Afterwards the law changed, so now it is totally different, but at that time Japanese companies needed to care about it. That's why.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-WYnOPxPTiyQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADM/yHt9vXH3Lbw/photo.jpg?sz=64
they kept it 2.0/2.2 to keep the overall balance. if there were a significant amount of hp added (lets say 25hp) they would have to beef everything else up as well (suspension, brakes, chassis, tires etc etc.). This is also the main issue of the FR-S/BR-Z.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4Pm5rW4PAxA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACA/KhsqVbSi-u4/photo.jpg?sz=64
They should've included the Bmw M roadster and the srt6 crossfire instead of the base models they would've hung right with the amg if not passed it.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4Pm5rW4PAxA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACA/KhsqVbSi-u4/photo.jpg?sz=64
I didn't scrutinize the date the video was published but still the srt-6 crossfire obviously would've been a better choice then the base model had this video been published a year later
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wl_GEzIucx0/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEo/Jyyn6tXFV-I/photo.jpg?sz=64
+SharpReviews srt6 crossfire ....... u serious ? :D it wasnt even out by the time this was aired..+ 5 Speed auto kept the same .. just no

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6pqTZG6mMOY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADk/5TE_V3BnFoY/photo.jpg?sz=64

I think Porshe could make the Macan a supercar of sorts if they give it the "Juke GT-R" treatment like Nissan did. Drop it down, give it some fender flares, and some nice wide wheels and it will go from looking like an SUV to a hot hatch, just like the Juke GT-R. A stock Juke looks like a regular, biggish SUV, but after the GT-R treatment, it looks a lot smaller and like it was meant to be a hot hatch from the start. I think Porsche could definitely pull off the same effect with the Macan.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Yeah, hot hatches like the Civic Si hatchbacks, the CR-X (now the CR-Z hybrid) and the Golfs never really took off in this country in a huge way like they did in Europe. Hot hatches over there are a whole niche of their own of performance cars. Over here, it's like if your fast car happens to be a hatch back well then that's that. But now that even Mercedes and BMW are getting into the hot hatch game, I think we'll be seeing more companies coming out with their own and, yeah, maybe even offer something like the Juke-R. The Juke is a funky looking car, but in R spec, those lights up top and the big lights lower down sorta work. Just my opinion.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios im in us. but im sure nissan will eventually make a small suv based on gt-r to compete with other makers. there is no way around it
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Actually sorry no. I just saw it on a VMax 200 Evo video. And the one they were running was independently tuned to make the 1000 something horsepower it was making. I'm not sure if they even sell the Qashqai or the R in the US. And it's not much of a looker. But I'd expect the pricing for a Qashqai-R to be something like the crazy number for the Juke-R, if you can get one in the 'States. Or are you from somewhere where they do sell the Qashqai and the R variants?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios Like Qashqai-R...will trade in macan as soon it will come out) hope it's not gonna cos like a Bugatti do you have any info pricing?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios lol I own a VMax1200 so it sounds like fun. I think the Juke GTR treatment doesn't make much sence for a 4WD because ppl get an SMALL SUV to feel better on snowy roads in winter...so clearance should stay there. If you don't care much about snow just get a WRX STI or something... Unfortunatly the macan wait list is long so I will get it in january if not later...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Kalsonic Yeah, the styling is, well, weird. Like who had that design up on the drawing board and had someone come along and say, "Hm. That'll do." But at least in Juke-R form, those weirdly placed upper lights look like the main headlights, and the two big lower ones look like big fog lamps. It's still weird, but it definitely looks a lot better in hot hatch, Juke-R form.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-aADXdazXjQA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEY/0FU5o3H0z8w/photo.jpg?sz=64
The Juke still likes like the ugliest thing ever though.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Just watched a video about the GLA45 AMG. That is a cool machine. They shouldn't even call it a compact SUV. I know they have that other car they call their hot hatch, but this thing is almost as small and definitely has a hot hatch look. If it were my money, I'd get the GLA45 AMG instead of that other car that they're selling as their hatchback. But ya gotta let me know how things go when you get your Macan. It should be pretty fun. And maybe later on you can give it a Juke-R treatment. Nissan also gave the GT-R treatment to a bigger crossover SUV and they call it the Qashqai-R. I saw it on an EVO VMax video and the people running it had it making 1000 something horsepower and it ran as quick as a LaFerrari. You should check out that video. It's pretty cool. It's called "LaFerrari flat out at VMax200 evoMax event."
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios Yes it's a crossover suv but it's go more of hatch look...it's lower the macan
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Ok cool. It's another one of the Cross-over SUVs that zee Germans are now turning out right? I might have seen something about it already but I'll look again.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
check out Mercedes gla45 i think you might like it
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Lol poor. The base Macan S is still quite the machine. Like a cross-over SUV version of the 911 Carrera S. Still a lot of fun to be had. Enjoy it!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios just got the base macan s model in black...because I'm poor lol.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Congrats on ordering the Macan. Which trim level? Oh and by the way, the smaller and wider thing is not an issue if you want to get a Juke GT-R look out of it. Firstly, the Juke is a 4 door, but just by dropping it down, and maybe having some bodywork add-ons like different side sills (or maybe even not), like the Juke GT-R, just doing that, it will look way smaller (because again, in stock form, the Juke looks big) and it looks like the Juke and Macan have about the same overall length, so again, just dropping it down and having wheels that fill out the wheel wells (and the Macan looks like it comes with fairly big wheels and low profile tires) and with the fenders that the Macan has, it would definitely look a lot, a lot smaller like the way the Juke GT-R (or Juke-R, as it is officially called) looks like a 4-door hot hatch. I think it would have the same smaller, wider hot hatch look if you choose to go that route. But either way, nice buy with the Macan. I'm sure you're gonna have a lot of fun. People have fun, like in a sportscar way, with the bigger Cayenne, so the Macan will probably give you a load of fun driving experience-wise. Have fun!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Sandra Rios I already placed an order on macan...expecting to get it in january... I wish it would be smaller wider and 2 door but seems like it's not goona heppen any time soon so... It's still a best crossover around thought
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x9R2lFjJJqw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAC1Y/b8KwEBf5VH0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ruslan X Yeah the Juke is pretty, um, "unique" in it's styling, to put it nicely, especially in stock, cross-over SUV form. But when it's dropped down, given the wider bodywork, etc., it totally looks like it was meant to be a hot hatch from the beginning. Again, I think the same could be done with the Macan, and the BMW X3M. I saw an X3 the other day, and was thinking if they gave it the Juke GT-R treatment, it would totally look like a hot hatch that, again, looks like it was meant to be a hot hatch from the beginning. I think Porsche and BMW are totally ignoring an untapped market by not coming out with assembly line cars with the Juke GT-R treatment. All those cross-over SUVs look pretty big when in stock form, but dropped down and given wider bodywork, again, they totally look a lot smaller and like hot hatches.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G3y0PmAgzNA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABTM/Z1dsl34Dvv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
I agree on 2 door and size but Juke just too ugly...
