I bought one of these off Amazon from Marine Surplus and Survival for
199.00 and it arrived in perfect condition as if it had never been used.
Threw the bags in the washer with some fabric softener and boom! This sleep
system is bullet proof and wreaks of quality. I definitely ain't taking it
back packing anytime soon but as far as car camping, emergency preparation
and bug out I don't see how one could do any better. Ideal piece of gear
for truckers who drive in freezing temps through the middle of no where.
I do not mean to knock him down. Just have a understanding that military
gear is good for military people because you people are bred into machines.
The average person would collapse from the weight of that gear. Military
gear is cheaper but much heavier then the commercial market. My favorite
pack i own is the Kelty Redwing. Since I try to be a minimalist I don't
need a medical pack inside my pack. When packing little gear each pocket
gets it's own purpose. Suscribed to Adam for a reason. PRO!!
I have this system ($80/ebay) and a -20 North Face bag ($80/rei outlet). I
prefer the military system because all of the components snap together and
it is far more rugged than the North Face bag. One item of note is that it
was a little smaller in the shoulder area than I anticipated. I was
comfortable but a little snug. My shoulders measure 54in in circumference.
I also discovered that I had to create an open air channel to feel
comfortable with the bivvy bag closed up (claustrophobia).
Check out Uncle Sams Retail Outlet. They have a 4 pc system that has the
Gortex cover and carring system. "Tennier Industries Modular Sleep System -
New | 8465014456274 Our price: $149.99 " •These complete systems are new in
the original MFR packaging! •Manufacturer: Tennier Industries •Includes:
Patrol Bag (8465-01-398-0685), Intermediate Sleeping Bag
(8465-01-398-0687), Bivy Cover (8465-01-416-8517), and Compression Stuff
Sack (8465-01-398-5428)
I like it for its functionality. It's very warm. My only complaint is its
really not for the broad shoulder kinda guys like myself and I'm a side
sleeper so it kinda sucks in that area as well, but I got this system by
the grace of God. I found the bivy in excellent shape for free. Then found
the other two bags including the U.S issue bed mat on craigslist. Makes an
awesome bedroll for the most part in my case!! I still think its a great
system.
I think these are quite durable and economical. I slept in the black layer
in Iraq for about seven months and it was none for the worse after. It
seems the bivy layer is the heaviest, and for my backpacking purposes I
would take a backpacking tent and just the black layer. More than good for
weight. I had mine one night and my fiance at the time forgot her sleeping
bag, I would have had to leave camp, but I had two bags for us.
Got my complete system at my local army surplus store yesterday. I paid
$79.90. Worth every cent. I went out kn the deck with an army issue foam
pad, threw down all 3 bags together, and was toasty warm at 35°F in the
Oregon rain all night last night. Christmas was never better. Not a single
drop of water inside. No sweat either, the GORE-TEX worked like a charm. I
feel like I stole it for this price. Happy trails...Evergreen
I was in the Army and used these regularly. And they are outstanding! I
slept in these in the middle of winter in Oklahoma without a tent and was
warm as can be. Also, the goretex kept me completely dry, even through some
intense rain and wind. If you can get past the weight, I HIGHLY recommend
getting one. I actually bought 2 now that I'm out of the military.
I spent some well below freezing winter nights in an un-insulated building
in Korea, add all I can really say is getting out of the bag sucked. And I
wish I knew about the hot water bottle trick as my toes always seem to be
cold even in summer. But it's a good system that can be compacted a bit
smaller than what was shown with a little extra work.
Love this sleep system. I used it and the ACU one while in the army. Always
found that the woodland one was a bit warmer for me. Just got one on ebay
for 80 and it came with the stuff sack. Also, you can really compress this
down for space constraints if needed. I used to sit on it and have a buddy
pull the straps as tight as they would go.
Bought the Patrol bag used from a surplus store in super grade condition.
Great bag on it's own for warm to cool weather. Impressed by the durabilty,
quality and width. Also the zipper is great, love how you can pull the bag
and the zipper opens, this is a surprisingly useful function. May now buy
the complete system or just the bivy.
FYI theres a guy sellign the Bivy for 20 and the 2 bags for 10 each on the
Indianapolis Craigslist...hes in New Castle. He has a few systems left and
will ship them. NO I am not in any way benefiting I am just trying to help.
I got 2 systems today in trade for a Cold Steel Recon Scout from a guy in
Toledo OH...
I just got a 20 degree Wiggy bag to complete my 3 pc set. Goretex bivy and
over bag. Have used the goretex and over bag in 31 degree temp , however I
was a little bit cold. But I like the versatility of the 3 bags over the 4
seasons. Plus the Wiggy is suppose to keep you warm even if wet.
just used this system in -10ish stayed warm, definitely need to use a foam
pad makes a huge difference sleeping on a pad. 1 night with pad in a good
snow shelter I was to warm. second night poorly made snow shelter legs
were out and legs were off pad not as comfy at all.
I've been using the olive inner by itself for about 6months. I love it.
It's been perfect for late summer, fall, and early winter. Sure it's a bit
heavier then more expensive stuff. But for value, it's fantastic. I hope to
pick up the rest of the kit this year. Bivy looks sweet.
@gibsonjr11 I agree. I remember the old intermediate army sleeping bag, and
I use to freeze in those things. Once I used the ECWS I'm never going back
to any other sleeping bag. Its worth it. Recently I lucked out and got six
of these for free minus the green bag.
small bag can be compressed about 3/4 size of a small shoe box, maybe a lil
smaller depending on what your stuffing it in to. if i am doing that i just
roll up the bivy and strap it to the side. rolled takes up more room better
to fold i up if you need the space.
I was out on an FTX with my army unit and we walked to a field where they
told us to go to bed. I pulled out my black bag and my bivvy and laid on
the ground and went to sleep. It was 17 degrees that night and I was just
fine. I still have one and love it.
I have the green bag and the bivy. Never put much thought into this system
until I found the bivy wrapped in plastic still for 5 bucks in a thrift
store. So I jumped on it and ordered the green bag. Ill get the black
eventually but so far love it.
I just picked up the bivy only. Spent last night on my deck with only my
italian army wool blanket and a foam pad. It got down to about 30F and I
was very comfortable. $70 for the blanket, $38 for the bivy and $7 for the
foam pad. Not bad at all.
I love this system, wish I was able to keep mine from the army. Just to let
you know you can get that system in the bag much much smaller. Just sit on
it and pull the straps and you can get it to 1/2 if not 1/4 the size in the
video.
I notice that when something is to heavy for people they try to get
something lighter but apart of survival is being physically fit and if your
pack is to heavy for you the answer is simple, stop being lazy and get
stronger...
They are now being sold on ebay for about 60 bucks. From what I understand
a new generation was released to the military with a digital camo pattern
on the bivy. So they are now getting red a lot of the woodland pattern
ones.
all my bags came with two stuff sacks. Also with the bivy no need to pack
and carry a tent, so off set some weight/bulk. Also if your not going sub 0
you can drop the summer bag, and carry just the winter bad as well.
U.S. Military 3 Layer ECWS Sleeping Bag System
U.S. Military 3 Layer ECWS Sleeping Bag System + Q&A!!! If any one wants any army surplus video's put up let me know, I prob have what you are looking for ...
a lot of military surplus has a few good items that are very nice to have
am ex military two items that stay in my bag that I would never do with out
would be my poncho and woobie (also know as a poncho liner) that has got me
threw a few ruff nights when a sleeping bag would just not due. if you use
them together they work kind of like the sleeping bag with it being water
proof and have a little insulation. the woobie in my mind is creature
comfort it is very soft and it always made me think of home when I had to
use it. because most of the time if we where sleeping like this it was not
good time.
@sackett68 I will totally agree with you, I do love the old style of
sleeping bag as'well most'lee because of the inside meterial esp if you
start to sweat, the meterial wicks it away from your skin where the new
style sometime's feel's like your laying in wet newspaper! I wear a under
shirt when I sleep in the new style and it totally help's 100% :) I still
give it a 10/10 because it's so warm and my old style bag only go's to +20*
and the new one go's to -30* I have 3 old style bag's just 2b
Hi Douglas, my husband just bought two of these sleeping systems and they
stink. How have you washed your's? I saw a video they can be washed in a
front load machine (which I don't have) with a special sleeping bag
detergent. As for drying, he recommended air drying for a couple of hours
then on very low setting in dryer. Oh yeah, also turn the bag inside out
prior to washing. Please let me know how you washed & dried your's. Thanks
so much for the video.
I have a green army sleeping bag and I use it to hunt in 18 degree I can
sit in my stand all day I pull my boots off and bungee them to the back of
my stand and get in it with jus my socks and zip it up to my face and I'm
good for all day when deer comes up I jus pull the zipper down and stand up
grab my bow. I keep it tied to my platform and roll it up and strap it then
put my stand together.its wonderful I wouldn't take $200.00 for it.
@sxdxfan Defense Reutilization Management Office. When I retired from the
Air side of the house (i was supply) they had changed it to DRMS (Defense
Reutilization Management Service. Check their sites to find out when they
have their auctions. they have them for individuals and business (surplus
stores etc). they sell everything from cars to tents to heavy construction
equipment. you can get things on massive discount.
I have one too, its USGI Current ACU MSS. Ive had it for two years. Its a
great system. For a year and a half I was looking for a army sleeping bag
these was in 2007 and mid 2008. There weren't much information on these
sleeping bag system then; but I look for them everywhere. In some website
were very expensive. about $400.00 to $600.00. in some places were
reasonable price but used in excellent condition.
Life sucks. My friend has begun seeing a ten because 2 months ago he joined
a site named Master Attraction (Google it if you wish to know more.) I'm so
green with envy since I would like to fall madly in love as well. I'm gonna
have a look at this Jake Ayres man's information. Surprising thing is, he
used to have Zero joy with women. How does one improve that rapidly? His
lady's like a model.
FAN BOY. I don't doubt that the system has it's uses, but it's definitely
not a great system for MOST purposes. Heavy, bulky, and bivies cause a ton
of condensation. The combined weight of my pad, tent, and bag are still
less than the 8-10 pounds this thing weighs, and that is a much more
comfortable and capable system most of the time.
Hey man this is a really nice review. Definitely going to have to check out
your channel. These bags really are nice. I used one in the swamps of Camp
Lejeune and stayed dry no problem. Now I use one up north in freezing temps
and stay toasty. Looks good man I sell these at Minuteman Outfitters.
Google it if you are interested.
I used to be in the Marines in the 90s and had this sleep system and they
are good to go! the green bag is what they call a patrol bag its your light
weight summer bag then the black is early spring/late fall and then the
complete system is winter. and its way better then a ranger roll!!!
Douglas, I was told by a very reliable source that they, (the government)
spray some sort of stuff on military issue materials. IE. Cloths, sleeping
bags, tents, rutsacks, ect. So they can detect you with infrared vision.
You might want to look into this further.
So I went to my local army surplus store. I bought one brand new with the
bag and tags. I bought it for $162.00, it came with foliage green sleeping
bag, urban grey sleeping bag, two stuff bags (small and large), and bivy
GoreTex bag with ACU Camouflage.
defence reutilization and marketing office. they are the ones who
decomission military surplus. ive never seen any that have markings with
blue paint like that but maybe it was used by the U.N. and someone spoodged
on it. lol better wash it
you def got a good deal! I have 2, paid 150 for 1, and 200 for the other.
camped out last wed and temps down to 29F, and I was toasty warm in just
the bag with no tent, slept good all night, no campfire...
When I was deployeed to Iraq we had to paint the bottom of our duffle bags
with paint. the person who owned the sleeping bag may have painted his
duffle bag with the sleeping bag inside it.
would you trust the gortex if for some reason you had to sleep ontop of
snow? im thinking about grabbing one of these for my all year round sleep
system
In a word: Yes. Best prepper bag, best light infantry bag, sniper
bag...etc. Had mine for 20 years and consequently also came from Saigon
Sam's. Light, warm, rugged. I carried one of these through my time as and
Infantryman in the Marines, and later in the 172nd Mountain Infantry Co.
(Army National Guard) in Maine. It has been used in the jungles of Okinawa
in the summer, Mountain Warfare training near Pohang S. Korea in November
with a near 80 degree F day/night temperature difference, drenching
downpours for three weeks unrelenting and just above freezing in the alpine
foothills of southern Germany, and sleeping in a hole in the snow in Maine.
To say that I love the one I have is an understatement. I don't know what
they used in that quilting, but there might be something magic going on. I
can report that I have carried other Marines and Soldiers to safety who
have been hypothermia casualties because they weren't able to stand watch
at night while still wearing their bag. Maintaining core temperature,
managing hydration, not becoming fatigued because its too heavy to pack
around, and staying dry when it is critical for avoiding hypothermia. In my
opinion, its the multi-tool of the sleeping bag world.
Was with the Mountain Division in the late 60ies in Germany. This bag was
the best we could ask for., especially during the winter. Still have later
editions, gave some to hunters here and just recently one to a 1SG at For
Carson, CO. All love it and no one understands , why they are not made any
longer. Only negative is, that the outer waterproof shell is somewhat
noisy.
+Howard Moore Well, it is always fun to talk with these self declared outdoor specialists. Many of the survival shows on TV are actually comedies and most of what I know today (being a Dinosaur) I have learned from doing and sometimes painful experiences. What always got me far was imagination, creativity and a hint of McGyver. I have also seen folks, that had the theoretical part down to the max, but failed miserably in reality. Now, as for the bag, I am actually thinking about having it manufactured and have a "scout" out to find the right manufacturer. We shall see. Cheers.
+Ramazotti been there done that lol (Ft Carson) 19E20 I only used mine when I was in the tank. I had taken a mountaineering class in college, spent January back packing out in the woods with a tarp instead of a tent. I don't think my DI was ready for a kid that had slept with his canteen to keep it from freezing and whose suitcase was an eternal frame expedition backpack. When we started talking about winter survival he told me he didn't ever want to know how i had happened to learn as much as i did about winter. Poor DI also told me there were only 2 types of poisonous snakes in Ky. I told him there were 3, when he told me that water moccasins were not indigenous to Kentucky, I asked if he wanted me to fetch him one, The senior drill was from Clay county KY told him not to challenge me on that one LOL
Pretty cool. I am not worried so much about weight so much as how compact
and packable a sleeping bag is and how warm it is or how easy it is to
winterize. I wonder how that would work since I have a West German rucksack
of about the same vintage. Problem with the ruck is it has pretty much
nothing on the outside to facilitate tying stuff to the outside and it
would waste a significant amount of space inside. I have the Canadian Army
cold weather bag which is awesome for cold weather but it is crazy bulky
and awkward to pack.
+Red River Scout You can get the original back packs as well online. Look for "gebirgsjaeger backpacks" The German bag was/is occasionally still available with a -10 C rating.
Really clever design. I can see that as being useful when I am out with my
telescope in the winter. I saw something similar years ago, I don't know
if it was this or not.
+Deep South Experience hmmmm that might be a stretch. good thing you can stick your feet out of these. i might drop one by....im applying for a job on your base. we might be neighbors!
The sleep system in the black stuff sack is the old issued sleep system,
while the foliage green stuff sack sleep system is the newer issued gear.
Both are great, but the newer foliage green one is supposed to be more high
speed and warmer for colder weather. I was issued both and from experience
they're pretty damn good sleep systems. I have slept in freezing weather
using both the sleeping bags and bivy cover. Just remember to put
something underneath you or use a cot because your ass will freeze if you
don't have anything between you and the cold ground.
:) Got the very same kit as yours and were excited just as you are in the
video... BEST sleeping kit on earth for now! Bulky/heavy ? Heck it's ALL
HEAVY DUTY and made to take a real beating at a very reasonable price :)
Try to put one of the big "pro-brand" sacks through what this can handle
and you quickly realize that toughness has a cost in and weight. My
Northface let me down with broken zipper, the one in my Salewa tored a BIG
hole after jamming... NOT gonna happen with this one :)
Wise guy :) I meant to say that this new technology / kit has been in use
for the last 10 - 13 years which obviously covers the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars.
Brief review of the French Army's 'Modele 71' sleepig bag, dating from 1976. Useful as a blanket and groundsheet as well as a sleeping bag and extremely ...
I was google-ing for the French F1 Sleeping system but yours is the only
video on a french sleepingbag..
My F1 is awesome! it's a modular system with a very thick flame retardent
gore-tex bivvie bag in cammo (1450 gr) ;)) then you'll have two bags to put
inside of each other inside the bivvy..
Never used the winterbag so far, had enough using the summer version..
nice feature also is the zippers wich run on top of all three bags instead
of on the sides, too minimize drafts i guess..
Wel i'm sold!
just bought a new tent but the bivvy is zo easy to set up.. ;))
if you ever come across one of these i would buy them, it's too last
forever..
:))
DIY $5 TYVEK SLEEPING BAG BIVY and SURPLUS SLEEPING BAGS!
I own both the old school ECW military bag and the new Modular issue bag and have alot of field experience with both. I go over my personal experience and 2 ...
Trying to put some camping gear together on the cheap. Great Video. I
especially liked the washing machine trick. My intuition tells me there are
a ton of other uses for this stuff. Perhaps a rain poncho? It might just be
the new duct tape.
I haven't had the problem. But I would either go over the tape with a heat gun to melt the adhesive into the tyvek or use a hot glue gun on the first 6 inches of Velcro so it does not start to peel back
Czech Army Bedroll
Description a quick look at my Czech army bedroll. I got from Military mart.co.uk.
Hi there. Do you think you could zip two of these together? They look as
though they open out completely. Just for summer time use with the missus,
save me bringing the duvet!
Ah, it was for camping in a small car. The current set-up is vacuum packing the duvet with an air bed pump. I've a bivy when on my own... Was thinking the French or Czech bed rolls would make for a smaller pack. Might still try this. Will be passing through your neck of the woods in July from Ireland. I'm sure we won't freeze anyway!
+David Slevin nice idea, but I don`t think it would work looking at the zips! . have to say in the summer its to hot to have it zipped up anyway, cheers
hi mate nice review many thanks ,I sent for this and a polish lavvu but
still waiting on them arriving [lol im only in Scotland think I was in
bloody Australia] thanks for sharing ..ATB...colin
+WELSH PREPPER lol I know what you meen mate ive been selling a few lately [just to make space] wee update my Czech bedroll and polish lavvu tent arrived this morning bedroll was a bit musky so washed both blue and wool blankets I was very lucky with the lavvu both halfs were solid canvas brand new and both made in 1975 take care...colin
I have used the bedroll loads of times, mainly with a winter sleeping bag, the lavvu tent looks good but I can only have so many tents, lol, cheers mate.
it is a great bit of kit, I have used it on all the resent meet ups, using the wool blanket, plus another wood blanket and a winter sleeping bag, it kept me nice and toasty , cheers
I had seen people use these on YT and got two when they came back in stock
at Milmart. Too good a price not to. If you turn the pillow end inside out,
the zips fasten all the way round your head. Not quite sure how one person
can do this, but it is there. Good luck with Spain trip.
I would like to, but the ones I knew about this year have all coincided with gigs and festivals my band have had booked. I watch the vids put up and know it would be a great chance to meet the people I have been learning from.
Due to inexperience, I have put off an overnighter due to the stormy weather the last couple of weeks since I got mine, but hopefully will try it out soon. Nice to hear from you. Keep on keeping on.
I did know that, but I don`t think I would do that, I did not get to go to Spain this year because of work, I have used it on the two prepper meets up this year and I will testing in Dec in the forest of dean, which will be very cold and wet.
