i found out how to fix it.. its the speedometer needle. just remove cluster
then take off plastic front cover and pop speedometer needle off with ur
hand wedge a small piece of paper or tissue in very small hole on needle,
then side needle back on for a tighter fit. thats all it needs because
metal rod it pops on to, over time wears down plastic so it slips just
wedge something in to tighten fit, very easy fix. hope this helps someone
better than buying a new cluster...
Unfortunately it looks as though the motor for the actual speedo was
faulty. The only way to fix it is to dismantle another cluster for the
motor and replace the motor or replace the entire cluster. I took it as an
opportunity to upgrade and swapped to an RSX Type-S cluster...love it and
it was cheaper than a replacement.
it's a common problem at higher speeds at high miles with an older Escort
for the speedo to do that
looks like you were averaging 90, so i wasn't suprised
my dad's 1995 Escort Wagon with auto trans did it on a cross-country trip
from philly to LA and back at about 65 mph avg. speed...had about 130k-140k
miles on it at the time
started bouncing around Indianapolis or so and did it the rest the trip and
for a month afterward
haven't tried it with my 1994 Escort with manual yet as i only use it for
local driving
(102.5k miles 100 miles put on since i got it)
i'm assuming it's a generally known issue though if you highway drive alot
to answer surge2004, no it does not
the trans still functions normally, and the best diagnosis we have is
either a sensor like you said, or a slipping speedo cable
