I have worked with hospice residents where I work, though they are the
exception rather then the norm. I consider it the nature of my work
distilled to it's most quintessential essence. It can be hard, but it is
also oddly satisfying at the same time. Those that do it exclusively have
my deepest admiration regardless of their faith, they are doing damn good
work. I do not proselytize atheism to my residents, though I never dodge an
honest question. I do answer some with caution though
These rituals have an important human purpose. To attempt to deny people of
what personal comfort they get from their beliefs and rituals would be
cruel and even irrational as it denies the human reality. If not for the
political motivations and intentions of many religious groups, their desire
to force everyone to submit to their beliefs via civil law, I would have
very little to say against Christianity or Islam. In the situation you
describe those politics are not an issue.
Thanks for attaching your video. I have been to a few funerals myself where
the sermon is more of an insult then a help. Many times the only thing they
know about the person is what They have read in an obituary. They are very
far removed and at times out of place as a community figure head. They fail
to connect at the individual level. 1 mile wide but only 2 inches deep.
I'm sorry for your loss. I got news today a relative of mine had died.
