HEADS UP ! i replaced my cat and the codes still came up. the toyota
dealer wanted to put another new cat. i said no way that wasnt the
problem. they couldnt explain where the code was coming form so they
automatically condemn the cat. i found the problem right away. IT WAS A
CRACKED HEADER !!! AND THE ONLY WAY IT WOULD SHOW UP IS WHEN THE MOTOR WAS
HOT !!! if the motor cooled down the crack/split in the header would
disappear . LEASON LEARNED THE HARD WAY !!!!
My Cat was stolen and a universal was put on. The Engine light keeps going
on. I was told to buy the exact cat and that should keep the light off.
Toyota wants way too much for one.
+hak1985org tanks for feed back . i have a Bluetooth elm327 but it doesn't work on my hilux pickup .i use it on my brothers cars 97 mercury grand marquis and 08 Mazda3 and its works fine .then i start looking for an answer for my question why its not working on my 2004 hilux ?and i find some people mentioned this issue on forums and they said its not an obd 2 its a Mobd (toyota special protocol ) .iam looking for a generic code reader scanner tool was tested on these stupid toyota's .i love my pickup but i hate this issue because almost every vehicle was made after 1996 its have an obd 2 port and protocol .
+hak1985org what scan tool you use on it for reading the trouble codes ?and if you know what scan tool is fits on old toyota pickup's ?because i have a 2004 toyota hilux and it's have an obd 2 port on it but it's not obd 2 i tryed some scanners and cannot have any communication because of the protocol .
+hak1985org Thanks so much for the info. I might have to give in and buy the original cat. Everything was fine on it, until that cat was stolen. I love my Tecoma and plan to purchase another one day. My 2000 has 266k and still kicking.
Btw, I cleared my CE light a month ago and it never came back on. I'm still running the original cat. Almost 300,000 miles and the cat is still working that well.
Yes. I wouldn't even bother with a non-toyota cat. The difference between an aftermarket cat and a genuine toyota cat is night and day. The genuine car probably has 3x as much catalyst in it.
I like your idea of going after the obvious (and cheaper) solutions
first. Dealers will go in reverse order of $$. First the catalytic
converter, then the muffler.. Eventually ending up by replacing the gas
cap and fixing the problem ;->
Fair Winds and good luck with your '99. My '96 Takoma is still the best
gift I ever gave myself!

I love my Tacoma. I am sad that I have to spend $1000 on a cat to get it inspected next month, but the truck is just unbelievably reliable and it's the only 15 year old vehicle I'd ever spend that kind of money on!
The check engine turn off--just long enough to get an inspection in July 2013. My inspection is coming up again next month, so I will have to do some more work on this. It looks like a new cat (or some rigging) is in my near future.
