Volvo S60 ETM REPAIR / Cleaning guide
This will show you exactly how to repair the ETM so you dont have to drop MAJOR money at the dealership.
Did this today on my 04 S60 2.5T. It seems to have worked well to fix my
rough idle problem. It took me about 5 hours total but I am not a mechanic
and normally don't do much more than change my oil. The hardest part was
getting the turbo pipe off because the clamps were turned in a way that
made it impossible to get to them with a screw driver or a socket. The fan
is a tight fit I was able to maneuver it out but I ended up having to take
off the radiator hose to get it back in. I left the pipe that goes into the
bottom of the etm in place and just pushed it towards the front of the car
which worked fine. You can actually see all 4 of the etm bolts fairly well
from the underside of the car but there is not enough room to get your
hands up in there. If you had a socket with a really long extension it
would make the process a whole lot easier. The video was very helpful I
wouldn't even have tried without it.
thank you so much for this video just spent 2 hours on my volvo c70 2.0
turbo following your video and it now works perfectly. was supposed to take
my car into the dealership on thursday and the quote was £200.00 all it
cost me was a socket set for £24.99 and throttle cleaner for £6.99. £168.02
savings. followed shadyMinor comment and waited for 10 mins and started
without any idle problem.
Great guide! I have clean my ETM on my S60 and now i have exactly the same
problem that you had when you started your S60 the first time after your
cleaning operation. My idling is about 1300-1400 rpm. How did you fix that?
I tried to loose the negative on the battery in 30 minutes but it doesnt
worked =/
Did your ETS light come on before you did this? Did it go off after? I
didn't see it, but you also have an info box to the left side of your
cluster that I can't read. Great job! Thanks for taking the time to stop
and record what you did! Probably would have only taken 3 1/2 hours if you
didn't! ;-)
You had to allow the ETM to learn its adaptations before you started it,
that is why it was idling badly on initial start- usually let it sit with
ignition on but not started for 10 minutes or so, plus have it on a
continuous power supply. Hope that helps anyone in the future.
I own a 2002 Volvo S60 and been pretty up to date on maintenance by my end
and even though I do not have a ETM light on I wouldn't mind going under my
hood to give it some love. All thanks to your video :)
That took some nerve for a shade tree mechanic such as yourself to attempt
let alone complete with success! Way 2 go! Did you ever figure out why the
car was revving high after your initial completion?
Also, clean the MAF sensor with the specific CRC MAF sensor spray by
removing the top of the air filter box, and spraying the sensor in the
direction of the air flow.
Once I start my car the revolutions reach up to 2 then it goes to a little
less than 1.
What do you think is the problem?
Shoul I take off the ETM again?

This was my problem as while, any time you work on the car or have the car
worked on due note the by unhooking the battery caused mine not to work
