While I firmly believe that universities and particularly the NCAA exploit
student athletes, being considered an employee may have a tremendous
downside. If the athletes are employees, then their scholarships, housing,
etc. could be considered as income. At Northwestern, tuition, fees, room
and board now cost $59,389. There's a lot of tax to be paid on $59,389!
Federal tax in over $8,000; Social Security adds $3,600, Medicare
withholding adds another $900; Illinois State Income Tax gets $3,000.
That's over $15K in tax! Like I said, be careful what you wish for!
It would be considered a grant under the current IRS tax system and grants are tax free. According to ESPN's Lawyer, Roger Cossack.
