Some people go canoeing* by themselves aswell. The survival kit is incase you're by yourself and need to survive. Besides even if you have someone with you in a different canoe they might not be able to help you. And better safe than sorry.

+Jeremy Metcalf Again, I take it you don't have much experience with them. They have their place sure. In a kayak you can't wear it on the fanny because of the cockpit design and seat. So you would have to wear it in front. You also have to consider the fact that you will be wearing a life jacket which depending on the size and style of the fanny pack would not fit right. The case he is showing isn't being worn in a cargo pocket (hence why the leash). He said he wanted it to be able to fit into a cargo pocket but that wasn't where it would be kept. He keeps it attached to himself with the leash and a carabiner. The case can easily rest in a storage pouch or somewhere else where it can easily float free in the event of a capsize. His goal would be to retrieve his kayak and any gear that he could. Failing that, he will at a minimum have this which would keep him alive until help gets to him or he can get to help. I live in the Pacific NW and our rivers run extremely cold even in the summer time. Wet gear is not what you want, especially if it is your last chance. 3 years experience as an EMT 4 years doing Search and Rescue and a life time spent hunting and fishing, trust me when I say a fanny pack would not be good in these conditions. Now if you were in the desert or were doing something like mountain biking, then maybe. It's all about knowing your environment and what risks / challenges you will likely face. 

+Mike L I disagree. If you're kayaking, you didnt fall out of a plane into it. Youre in the kayak because you put yourself there. therefore, if you can put a small container in a cargo pocket, you can bring something else. fwiw, fanny packs are worn on the fanny, hence the name. it isn't supposed to be in the front. I'll take the fanny pack and risk some things getting potentially wet over a tiny tin with hardly anything in it. Then again, if I'm outdoors I'm bringing a shitload more than a fanny pack.

If you were wearing it while Kayaking or doing other activites where one sits for a long time it would get very uncomfortable real quick. Also, depending on the size they can get in the way. They aren't as durable or water proof. Ziplocs aren't intended to be water proof and while you can add waterproof storage bags they do take up space and add weight. A fanny pack might be good in some situations but not for the situation he is describing. Sometimes bare bones is all you have. This isn't something for camping, this is something to keep you alive until you are rescued or you can get to help. Nothing more than that. Hence why it is "bare bones". I would bet that he has a lot more gear in his kayak, especially if he is camping.
