I had had been with you, I would have join you. Throughout history, many nice and honest people like you and your friends faced unjustice and iniquity by refusing to cope with the so called authorities. Here, the authorities for instance would like to close the door to refugees (as was done to people during WWII, on the false ground that "the boat is full", and so many refugees, Jews or political, were turned over to the German occupying forces in neighbouring France across the border) and some quite ordinary people decide to help and/or hide them. It is the same now. What is the risk for those who do so ? Fines and official reprobation. What is the risk for the refugees ? Expulsion back to the places they had to leave, torture and death. No matter for discussion.

A Crown Court Judge in a civil case later branded the support given to the homeless youth by members of the public as & I quote " Grossly Irresponsible". +thepinkpasty I can understand your being angry. Unfortunately you have to work with these official institutions. Are authorities in Cornwall worse than elsewhere ? Something must have gone amiss somewhere. I can't believe (not that I don't trust you) ALL social institutions citizens pay for closed their doors and didn't want to hear this young man's situation. There must have been some people feeling concerned, if not officially at least privately. A thing is sure : schools have a responsability not to allow bullies, and to help. In my country, Switzerland, we also have to make progress against prejudices, against bullies in schools and also with parents. But there are institutions, like "Service de protection de la Jeunesse" (Youth Protection Office) who are by law endowed of the right to interfere within families in case of misconduct, abuse and/or other violence towards children and young people. They can take the young one out and care for him and the family can be severely punished. Other institutions relay the system for older people, providing they get an opportunity for tuition and formation. For the younger ones, a special phone line exists to call for help and/or assistance, and emergencies are taken into account. Of course the system isn't perfect, but at least it exists and no young boy/girl, no young man/woman rejected and forced to live in the streets. I spent part of my life as a teacher (basically I am a historian and an anthropologist) in middle and high schools. I once offer shelter to a young guy of 16 for a couple of weeks until the SPJ took him for help. The boy was a nuisance to his mother's friend, a former French Foreigh Legion soldier, a brutal person, who hated the boy and made pressure on the too weak mother to throw him out. The couple were punished, the man expelled and the boy taken care of until his majority. He is now a fine professional and himself ready to have a family of his own. We remained in touch. The first thing I told my pupils is that I would never accept bullying from them or to them for whatever reason, ethnicity, colour of hair, weight, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or the absence of it, etc. Each person has an absolute right to respect and security, and school must be a place of openmindedness, discussion and debate but in no way of segregation and humiliation or violence. And that should be true also within the family. We have heard too many of these young people drawn to suicide and that is the worst scandal in a society claiming itself modern and civilized ! Sorry to have been so long, but it had to be said.

I think you were right to point out the errors of the circus theme because my thoughts were the same when i learned of the theme for 2010. I have never liked the circus and i do have a fear of clowns but thats just me. Gay pride originaly held a political message to promote gay acceptance and equality, the circus theme is clearly about entertainment and having fun but the organisers are hurting their own cause!!
