Thank you for your videos, can you explain again why the force of friction
is positive when you are calculating work? I thought the force of friction
was negative because the direction of motion dictates a positive sign?
Could you clarify please?
I understand now, the F required to overcome the friction is positive since it is going in the positive x direction, and because of the motion. If it were the reverse, would that mean the F required to overcome the friction would still be positive? because the direction of motion is positive?
+Sarah Groleau The friction force is a vector quantity. As such the magnitude of a vector cannot be negative.According to the way the problem is set up, the friction force is directed to the left, which by definition is a negative direction. The force required to overcome the friction is directed to the right. The work done to overcome friction is a positive quantity. What would it be if the problem was drawn in the opposite direction?
