Corvette install poly bushings rear upper control arm C5 Z06 by froggy
I show how to install polyurethane bushings in place of the stock rubber bushings on a C5 Z06 Corvette. This upgrade provides an improvement in handling ...
For "normal" street use & occasional autox / track the stock ones are fine. For mostly autox/track I have tried koni, pfadt, stock, and currently have JRI. All those cost a lot more than stock.
Froggy, can you install Poly bushings in the lower control arms without
needing alignment? Or would alignment be necessary after doing the bottom.
I would only replace the control arm bushings and not touch the other end
like you did in the swap. I guess I would just remove the 2 bolts, remove
the old bushings, install poly, put back and install bolts. Will that
require alignment?
There are several ways to do it. I jack up the car & take the wheels off (for working room) to install. To adjust the preload out (if you have adjustable end link(s) )you need the suspension loaded.
To change out sway bars, does it help to have the wheels off or on the ground? Can you change them either way or which way takes the weight off the end links and bars? Thanks
I am not familiar with kits where you reuse the metal parts. For a suspension control arm to work CORRECTLY and move somewhat FREELY the tolerances of the different parts need to be very accurate. As you move up the ladder from rubber to poly to delrin to monoball the tolerances become tighter.I would guess that a "cheap" kit where you reuse parts "MAY" go together ok but would be a compromise in how well it functions (on the track, say). So you may "get what you pay for".Van Steel I believe has one of the current better kits, which ones are you looking at?
Another question, I am looking at bushing kits and some say use your own metal parts and then others, more expensive, include new metal parts. How difficult is it to use your old metal parts and are there any tricks to make it easier? If there was not much difference I would get the entire kit but the bushings alone are around $99 and the bushings with new metal parts are almost $300, so big difference. Thanks again for your help.Rick
+Rick Campbell Ignore my other post, you already have seen my vid obviously. You should not need a press to install the new bushings, they are NOT like a ball joint where tons of pressure are required. They should slide in with some but not a lot of pressure (hand or a vise). I show how to press OUT the old ones using common hardware store tools (I made it up with the threaded rod). If the new ones don't slide in pretty easy they need to be "trimmed" that's another process altogether. There is some variance in the ID of the control arms and also variance in the bushing OD so you have to "try it" and see if they need trimming to fit. Be prepared for that.
Here is my video of rear upper control arm install poly remove rubber. The rear lower is hardest.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3K94lODO00&list=PLfoM8sA3HHbxrCcE0l_yrUmlnZTSEEiJT&index=141
Is the bottom control arm bushings easier or harder or equal to the top? I am considering tackling the job myself but have never done it before. But like many things I know how to do, at one time I did not know how to do them either. The bushing kits are not that expensive if I can do it, if not, and I have to have it done, then I will put it off. I saw a Phadt video of the control arm bushings and sway bar bushings while driving and how much they move around, so I know it will improve the car, just want to know what I am getting into. My worry is I do not have a press if I need one. Does advance and places loan them if I need one?
Bad news for me today Froggy. Took the 2000 c5 in to a local auto shop for
a rattle I was having trouble finding. They told me all of my front
control arms and both front shocks needed replacing. $3,111.00 Then a
69.00 alignment! OMG, and I'm unemployed due to health reasons right now.
Looks like I will be watching a lot of your videos and spending time under
the car. I surely can't afford their repair bill. Plus they don't just
buy bushings from GM, they said they buy a whole new control arm with
bushings already in them. Unbelievable repair bill. I just got the car
two weeks ago....the past owner claimed he didn't know what the rattle
was....I bet he did and just wouldn't say..he traded for my mint condition
Harley Davidson. I'm so disappointed.
Hey thanks! Hope your HF still has them. If so, I'll send my address, phone etc via personal message. I'll pay you the cost plus your trouble. If you are connected with Pay Pal, I can pay you there. Really appreciate it. From your videos, I can see it's an invaluable tool!
+froggyAlso, I did a search for the ball joint tool you got at HF....they must have discontinued it because they only showed a more expensive kit for around 80 or 90 bucks approx. Let me know if your HF still has them...I'd order one from you and include a tip for picking one up for me. We don't have a HF in our small town here in New Mexico. Nearest one is about an hour away. But as I said, they don't even show it on their website. ??? Sure liked the price of yours!
+froggyYes...that's what I'm going to do for sure. I have a forum member in my town and he's offered to help me once his lift is free of other project cars. He was a Chrysler mechanic for 25 years so he knows what he's doing. Very nice of him to help me out. Just have to wait a bit for him to complete some other jobs.I'll probably start ordering the parts we will need. I'm learning a lot from your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge and struggles.
You could install poly bushings and use the existing control arms. They are a few hundred, I suggest Pfadt (I have them on mine). They are not "too bad" to install, however a bit much for a beginner. You could have an independent install them, dealer won't do it.

I have a question regarding the drive pulley. I found your instructions on
how to remove and replace the a/c tension pulley and idol pulley but came
short of showing how to remove the drive idol pulley show in this video. I
see that you removed the power steering pump and reservoir to get to it. My
question is is there another way to change idol pulley with removing those
other parts?
+Vountria Moss Some people break it off with hammer/pliers/etc. It's plastic. Then you can get to the pump bolts & replace pump & get the skeleton pully (holes thru the pully):)
One comment if you haven.t covered it already. After you get the pump
w/bracket take it to Autozone with a 13/16 wrench and a Half in drive
ratchet with metric sockets and use their power steering pump pulley puller
and if you have your new pump if not rebuilding your old one with Edelmann
8900 rebuild kit. After rebuild and installation on bracket take it back to
Autozone and use the pulley installer tool in same kit . Or just borrow the
tool kit and do everything at home.
hey froggy how did you go about bleeding the system after installing power
steering pump i kept the car up in air turned off with cap off and turned
wheel lock to lock (left to right ) but my power steering worked for only
about 3 mins then gave out .... this is my second install the 1st one was
changed due to noise but ended up being an idler pulley help !
As far as I know, power steering bleeds itself once the car is started & the rack is cycled a few times, then ck the level of fluid to be proper. This is because the pump & fluid adding & air exiting the system is at the high point of the system. Unlike brake & clutch where the air is forced out at the low point.Coolant is a mixed bag, some need bleeding & some bleed themselves. Thanks for watching!
Hey Froggy,
Am sending my heads off for work on my '08 Z. I had to remove the power
steering reservoir from mine as well. To add to your video, I disconnected
the hoses from the same place you did. To get to the lower one, I had
recently bought about 12" needle nose pliers with 90 degree tips. Worked
very well on the first try.
Datawiz
Never connect ground first, I have no idea what I was thinking. Always connect power first so that a spark or surge isn't created when ground is connected.
I don't use them. I just bought to see the quality which is lacking and to share with others. I need to make another video showing the shit materials used to make them. Glad you don't like them too.
I thought they did as well but my assumption was simply based off of how cheap the interior components were. Thanks for commenting and letting people know what they actually look like at night.
+SalemMillion Here's the link //www.z06vette.com/forums/f5/high-power-led-headlights-anyone-tried-these-125273/ to the forum with them installed. Judge for yourself but I can't see them lighting up as much as is shown in the picture. I'll post another video with just the headlights and what I think of them.
+SalemMillion I haven't the slightest clue since I never installed them. I found pics on a corvette forum and will see if I can find them again. I'll leave a link when I do.
so how you like them, any video at night driving with these? I love the
popups so I got the ACA projector headlights with led bulbs. Inside out my
c5 conv. is all leds.
+andrenj1970 I'm leaning more towards just making my own. I am currently working on making myself a vacuum former for the lenses and everything else will just take time. I have to figure out how I want the mounts to go in as well as how many projectors I want to have and I'll probably throw in some halos. Long process and I am aware of the 9v battery, that was just for the look it would give.
+VitaminD15 might be too much $ to mod that. If you don't like popups you can get like projector headlights with HID. As in your video 9v olt battery is not the proper power to test your led headlights, 12 volt is required. Also check out on ebay: led tailights, clear rear sidemarkers etc. Good videos man.
I actually haven't installed them yet, I plan on replacing the LEDs with higher quality ones first. I'm actually in the process of designing a flush set of projection LED headlights. When I finish the projects I'll definitely post some day and night videos, as well as, the installation process. Sounds like you have a sick c5 conv. I plan on replacing the rest so more videos to come.
Added a link to the description for you just click the picture after you click the link it'll take you to ebay and show you both styles of the headlights.

How to replace a c5 Corvette oil sender without removing the Intake.
It is hard to see. Video may make it look clearer due to the angle? I think
I shot this with an ipod mini so I could stick it in some tight places.
Might try a mirror to get a better look.
What year of C5 is this? The '98 engine bay I'm working on doesn't look
exactly like yours. There's more stuff in the way to the point that I
can't see the sensor like you can.
Well you can call me crazy, fanatic.vette lover or whatever you want but i
just changed mine 5 minutes ago 12:30 am lol it wasnt so dificult with the
right tools but no so easy either ,,i think this is a work you can do by
yourself save money just spend in tool( no more than 40 bucks) in any
garage this work could be like 100 $
ok thank you speedhead42 i replaced mine a few days ago it wasnt easy but difficult either with the right tools anybody can do it thanks again and yes this is a common issue not just in ls1 in all gm engines but anyway i keep my vette i dont mind any issues lol good luck
The socket is only $8...you will also need a 12' 3/8 drive extension a universal, and ratchet...take your time and try not to get frustrated...you can do it!
yess they have all of them autozone,,pep boys,,advance autoparts,,
