Before Toyota could be bothered to recall 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus cars that they had known for two years had a problem, an off-duty state trooper and three ...
The man was a safety engineer with the CHP. I am sure he did everything
he could to save his family. The car was a rental, they had just picked
it up and got on 125
That stretch of freeway is only a couple miles long then it ends or banks
hard east.
He happened in less then a minute or so, the tires were fully engulfed
with flames from him braking. The shut-off was a button type that you
have to hold for a number of seconds. They were going over 120 mph.
It wouldn't let him put in neutral, he was trying to! Plus control a
speeding car on a 2 lane highway.
This man did nothing wrong. He was a good man who always took care of
his family.
+Maestro_T For CVT's with electronic shifters, you have to hold it in neutral for a few seconds like you would the power button. It's meant to protect against accidentally shifting out of gear by mistake if you bump it. And for older transmissions, it's mechanically connected with a cable and will shift out if pushed forward, no button/pedal presses needed. The driver and his wife would have known this if they bothered to read the manual that came with the car.
+Maestro_TThere were only in the car a matter of minutes, not enough time to process it allif you're behind the wheel. Toyota and the dealership were sued big time and had to pay the family. Another man that was in jail for vehicular manslaughter was released as his car was re-checked after this accident and it was found the floor mats were at fault. He was driving a Camry. It was awful.. I live near there and think of them when I drive by there. His daughter was set to start her first day in high school the next day. Very sad.
+lin sioux I did not know the tires were in flames, that is certainly hard to believe but it may have happened if he kept pressing on the brakes and releasing rather than keeping his foot down the whole way. This would have caused them to overheat and not be effective. As for the slots, I really don't buy the argument that it's that much more difficult. I've driven cars with those slots, and I just looked at a picture of the ES350's shifter, neutral is straight in front, it's the other gears where it moves on an angle. Now if there was a software malfunction which prevented the car from being shifted to neutral, that is another story, and a very serious one. I thought I heard something that they owned the same car?I realize it is not something people want to consider because it's not a nice thought to have, but it may very well have been that he panicked and made the wrong decision(s) and the blame is not with Toyota. That's also not to say that many others would not have panicked in the same situation. I'm not sure we know one way or the other what really happened and whose fault it was.
+Maestro_TThis all took place in a matter of minutes. The tires were fully engulfed with flamesand the freeway banked sharp, so he tookthe exit. I live a few miles away, the exit dead-ends into a sandy field. The car hit a small sand-bank and flew up and flipped. The brakes were gone.. that fast. He was also avoiding other cars, it's just a two-lane freeway. A short one as well. I checked my car, it goes into neutral easy. But this car was more difficult because of the slots. It happened fast, the car was going 100 + mpg.... his whole family was in the car, he did everything a mortal soul could. So much going on at once in an unfamiliar car. Well, did I mention they were only a few miles from the dealership when they crashed?
+lin sioux Slotted or not slotted, you can still shift to neutral unless there was something in the car's (malfunctioning?) computer system which didn't allow this to happen. His wife was probably pushing the start/stop button repeatedly instead of pushing and holding. Now I have read Car and Driver's article of simulating an unintended acceleration situation and if he had stomped on the brakes and held them, he would have been able to stop the car, even without putting it in neutral or turning the engine off. Why he was saying "no brakes" is also very puzzling, unless he wasn't pushing hard enough and couldn't feel them.
+Maestro_T It was one of those slotted types. It was an automatic too. Remember they were going very fast very quickly.. he had to keep the thing in the lane and avoid traffic as well as try and disable the car. It was a short stretch of freeway (a mile) the car was going 100 mph. That was his brother in law talking on the phone, his wife was trying to turn the engine off; it was a button switch.. you have to hold it for 3 seconds for it to turn off. I'm guessing she had problems because everything went down so fast. This was not their car, it was a rental. They had only driven a half mile when this occurred.
+lin sioux Why would the car not let him put it in neutral? I have never heard of that kind of override before.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d Bluetec 4Matic Acceleration Test 0-100 km/h
Wybaczcie, że taki krótki filmik zamiast długiego z ostatnią trasą Skodą Superb 2.0 TDI. Mam problem z laptopem. Sam go rozkręciłem i próbowałem naprawić ...
Car Maintenance : Signs & Sounds of Transmission Problems
Vehicles may have manual or automatic transmissions, and signs of failing transmissions include unusual noises, grinding gears and whining sounds. Find out ...
Ok I got a 88 Chevy s10 you can put it in reverse but when when you try to
put it in drive it starts grinding gears like it don't want to go in gear
can anyone help
+jacob campbell after 25 years your vehicle becomes antique it may be worth replacing considering the older s10 crowd is a cult following with lots of parts available
+jacob campbell yes depending on where you hear the noise I'd suggest taking it into a shop but I'm assuming they'd say the same thing I am, look up the cost of replacement, most likely it's more than the vehicle is worth, so either get it replaced or rebuilt if you're really attached to the vehicle or run it till it dies completely, but first get it checked and estimated at a shop
+Daphne Wood does it sound like your car has turned into a jackhammer? that's what mine sounds and feels like when i first put it into reverse from time to time... :/
+Daphne Wood THE MOUNTS KEEPS THE ENGINE AND TRANNY IN PLACE WHILE OPERATING IT ... IF THEY ARE WORN OR BROKEN SPINNING PARTS WILL RUB AGAINST THINGS CAUSING GEAR SELECT THUMPS AND/OR VIBRATIONS !!
