Mmm... Planes IS arguably about a "race". Cars begins and ends with one, but is by no means actually about about a "race". If it was, he would have won and had a typical happy ending. You literally said in your post it was a rags to riches rehash. Its not. Lightning already has the riches, but hes an insufferable egotistical twit. Dusty in Planes didnt "put money" on new equipment...he was given piece by piece by the others bc slowly he gained their respect and acceptance.Also by your logic I guess The Avengers is a rehash of The Incredibles, Serenity is a rehash of Star Trek and The Hangover is a rehash of Bachelor Party (ooh took it back) because...they share a theme even though they have different plots - Dont look - I havent seen it yet, but Turbo is probably a rehash of both movies too.

Cars features a hot-shot arrogant superstar who is one race away from being the world champion. He feels doesn't need anyone and has no friends until he's stranded in a nowhere town and learns from others what it's like to take life slow , enjoy little things, and make actual friends.The old "mentor" turns out to be an old champ but doesnt want anyone to know. Ends up hooking up with the main female car.Concludes with his LOSING the race at the end, but gaining respect from everyone due to him helping out the former champion have a dignified end to his career. Main comedic villain actually wins the trophy.Planes features a down to earth, nobody crop duster who dreams of making it big in air racing.His friends help him get to a position to do so, and he gets tips from his old "mentor" who says he was one thing, but really wasn't.Doesn't hook up with the female, but one of his friends do.Ends up winning the race with help, and beats the villain.Yup, these two are exactly the same!
