thank you, an 80 year old nice lady taught me how to hold the yarn 20 years
ago, and I've been crocheting like that for a long time. as I've gotten
older, I found my left hand cramping a lot after 15-20 minutes of
crocheting... I am getting old... so I had to come to youtube for
alternatives ways on how to hold the yarn for those moments when I get
cramping on my left hand.... this is a great technique, never did I think
that there would be a different way of doing it. she taught me to use both
my pinky and ring finger go around them, then send the yarn to my index,
and finally hold the yarn with my thumb and middle finger.... it worked for
many years, but as mentioned, age hasn't been very helpful and my left hand
needs alternatives

@bobwilson123 Thats a good idea... except. I only started about 3 weeks
ago... so far I have made a HUGE scarf... ruffled one... and 11 hats...
because everyone wants a hat!! So I have 2 more hats to make and then my
daughter wants a Cat and 5 kittens!! (Do you know any where where I may get
a cat and kitten pattern?? Cannot find one anywhere!!) then I may have some
spare time to practice and make me a blanket which is why I started in the
first place!! LOL
Where abouts in Australia are you? I have only been crocheting for 6 months
and I am definitely doing something wrong because my thumb is killing me
and it is going doing to my wrist! I LOVE crochet and all i want to do is
crochet, crochet, crochet but I have to rest it for a week I've been told
and try holding my hook differently..... I would love to find a group in
Melbourne . . . anywhere near Northcote that can show me a better way to
hold the hook
I have a question. My cousin is 73 years old. She told me that when she was
a young woman, her mother showed her how to crochet holding the crochet
hook very differently than how it is held today. Her mother's family was
from Hungry and Eastern European countries. Do you have any idea how this
was done or maybe a link you can post on this site? I've gone all over the
internet and cannot find a darn thing on it. PS: Thanks for this great
video!
Interesting! I have heard of the 2 basic methods of holding the hook as
either the "fork" method, which is looks as though your group mainly uses,
and the "knife" method of holding the hook overhand. As I watch this video
and other tutorials, I wonder how on earth anyone can crochet differently
than I do. My mother used to hold her hook in the underhand position, but
since I did not actually learn from her I use the overhand method.
Thank you so much for posting this!! I am teaching myself to crochet by
reading books and watching videos, and I felt hopeless at holding the yarn
the way all these resources have shown me. How refreshing to see these
ladies making such beautiful items, and using their own personal ways of
holding yarn and hooks. I feel relieved to see that it is okay to be free
with any technique!! Gorgeous crocheting too!!
Yes, we have a few, but most times it's only me and a bunch of ladies. Once
I get a video camera I will post a little on YouTube to show our group. We
have so much fun. I wish more people would discover the joys of crochet. We
are in Atlanta, Georgia. Is your group in the UK?
I hold mine completely different to how any of these ladies hold theirs. I
hold mine like a knitting needle and use it like one to. I have tried other
ways, but this suits me better... guess that what you get for learning to
knit first!! LOL Just love this craft so much xx
Oh wow that is fantastic! I have been running for 2 1/2 years I statred the
group with one member ....me ! We now have about 25 members but they do not
all turn up at the same time but last week we had a recored ....17 members
!! Thats great that you have men coming too !
@gbmaltese HI ! I am so glad that you found ths video. I once got told that
i was holding my hook WRONG and the lady was very mean about it ...As long
as you make the stitches thats good enough ! Doesn't matter how you hold
the hook or yarn :O)
@SeLAnDDeMiFaN33 Yes that lady who is making that is 83 and she has such a
fabulous eye for colour. She can put a whole heap of colours together and
they look fabulous, where mine just loks like a yarn throw up hahaha
Yes we do. I started the group in 2003 with 3 members and now we have
between 25 and 30 ladies (and guys) every Tuesday night. We're all crazy
about crochet and knitting. We just can't stop!
@bobwilson123 Glad I am not the only one, wish I could do it the other
way... it is faster, on average I am 4 stitches behind in every row...lol..
Never mind!! Thankyou x
@silentwriterofpa HI, thanks for your comment. That is very interesting. I
have never heard of such a thing but it has me wondering what it is also
