Hello, tx. for your interest. Try installing it as documented on https://wiki.eclipse.org/ESON, and email me if that Wiki page is not clear enough or if you run into any errors, and I'll clarify it.

Why do you use old samples for testing?

I don't use samples that are too old. I use a mixture of samples from a few days to get a reasonably accurate detection ratio test to see what % of samples an av is adding to its database in a reasonable amount of time. I think that is the best way to estimate an average response time for an AV. Sometimes I am forced to use samples that are slightly older than I would like because of lack of availability. This is not something I like or choose to do but I do it when there seems to be no other alternative, but I adjust the expected detection ratio accordingly, and judge the product differently.
