There are sleeves that cost $1.20 (a pack of 100). I used those for my
Warhammer: invasion. If you know the game then you also know that there's
almost no shuffling. Though after few games the sides of couple of sleeves
split apart. Then there are the $3.60 (a pack of 50) sleeves which I use
for the Race of the galaxy. In that game cards can wear off quickly so you
need more enduring sleeves. The same goes for Dominion - you need very good
sleeves if you don't want to change them every few games
@ntwynn I've played even less than you and can easily defeat a basic
approach like that. Simply adding a few smithy cards to my own deck and
your basic strategy would fall apart because I'd have all the Province
cards before you got near them. Keep learning. Google "big money" and how
to beat it. Consider the Witch, Chapel, and Gardens cards and how they can
easily defeat what you're doing now. The game isn't broken at ALL. You
simply discovered the first of MANY possible advanced strategies.
actually, you are wrong on all accounts. You cannot select a "bad" card
since you buy cards on each turn, and there really are no "bad" cards to
buy. You don't have THAT many choices, because most of the time you buy
what you can afford. Also, there is a "defense" card which works against
ALL the "Take That" cards..and those cards are really really fun because
they provide interaction (otherwise a game would feel to much like a
solitaire experience). Anyways, your impressions are quite wrong.
@Valdinsh The game gets repetitive because you remember the cards and they
come up again? I'm not sure if you're playing with only one combination of
the 10 decks of action cards, but I've found that my strategies, pace,
duration, and number of cards in my final deck vary greatly from game to
game based on the deck combinations. I don't have either expansion yet and
haven't needed them to cure boredom. Show me a person with one way of
playing, and I'll show you a person who should lose often.
... to play them out to get those victory points. Then it adds some serious
strategical thinking. Regardless of vast amount of cards available in the
box the game still gets repetitive as you remember the cards and they come
up again. At the end it gets sort of ''automatic''. After five times of
play (though I have only played a two player session so far) the game gets
monotonous. It's good if you have both the Dominion and D.Seaside, you are
a fan of the series and have 45$ to spend on cards
I feel like you could've phrased a lot of things "better" (although, that
could just be me). For example, you kept calling the "stacks" of cards
decks, in Dominion, they are called Supply Piles. Not that you have to use
supply pile, I just think it's good to imply that all of the cards are the
same (where as "decks" are usually varied and random). For example,
dominion comes with 25 different stacks of cards that you'll use to build
your deck during the game. No sweat, you just 'peeved' me.
@LittleBlackSparrow The mine will increase your coin's value: playing the
Mine makes a copper into a silver (but you trash the copper) and makes a
silver into a gold (but you trash the silver). In this way, you aren't
"spending" money to make more... But you are spending an action and loosing
a good coin from your hand. It could be argued that too much copper is a
bad thing to your hand (it's better to have one card that has the buying
power for three cards). Starting to make sense?
I'm a card game fanatic. I got a print of Dominion: Intrigue after watching
Tom's review and reading loads of other reviews and seeing the game played
out in real life. It's is easy to learn, colorful, fast. Though, the game
mechanics get boring as there's not much to do than buy cards (roughly
said). The only way I see the game more difficult would be radically
reducing the amount of victory, action victory, treasure victory cards so
that players are forced to buy action cards ....
now simple math: 2 x $3.60 (for 100 sleeves) x 15 (1500 cards - all
Dominion series) = $75 (Latvian/Estonian sleeve prices) Also the Dominion
in Estonia and Latvia costs $50. Sadly but Europeans have to face a lot
more higher prices than people in US. Definitely not. Every single time I
have changed those 10 decks, played different strategies but because of the
simplicity and because there's only 25 types of different cards the game
does become mechanical and a bit boring.
@ntwynn Ah, of course you're absolutely right about Militia. Not sure where
you're reading, but I've never seen any experienced player suggest
"embracing" it. Yes they acknowledge that the Big Money gambit will beat a
complete newcomer, but there are dozens and dozens of well explained
examples of how to always beat such a simple minded approach. Every
discussion I've seen suggests that discovering what you have is necessary
part of the learning curve… nothing more.
@danteism Militia causes the target to discard down to 3 cards and nothing
more. It does NOT read "discard 2 cards". Your example is flawed. However I
get what your saying. Most experienced players I've read online have long
since acknowledged the issue with treasure cards and advise embracing it
but playing it better than the other guy. I just feel it's boring and
cheap. It was also disheartening to see it in action on my third day of
playing. Defeating really.
@ntwynn I've read that other people have this problem and apparently the
expansions have addressed this which is fine. But as far as I'm concerned
this game is now ruined for me and I honestly feel I've wasted my money. I
want to put this on here because many people, like I, will have buy this
game based off your review. So I tell you now Dominion in it's original
form is BROKEN. And when you realize this it'll deflate all the fun out of
the game.
@TripwireBeast keep in mind that Tom's speaking to people who may have
never played the game. When you're doing that, it's probably best to speak
in laymen's terms. "Dollars" instead of "Coppers" because you associate
Dollars with making purchases. Decks instead of supply piles because
everybody knows what a deck of cards looks like. He's trying to explain the
game in uncomplicated terms rather than administer the rules.
Hey Tom man I love your reviews but I need to give my 2 cents on Dominion.
My cousin and I have been playing it non stop for days now trying to
understand it in and out. We've found that the game can be won with an
almost 90% success rate by ONLY BUYING treasure/coins. In this strategy you
buy nothing but coins, no action cards, and keep buying coins until you
have enough gold cards to nab all the 6 point cards.
Yeah the base set comes with tons of different cards to play with but the
real replay value comes from how many expansions there are to buy and all
of the different cards available both in the base game and in all of the
expansions, when i first found this a woman brought it to my college and
had the base game and 2 expansions with her and i played for almost 7 hours
and still had an itch to continue playing.
45$ on each print of the series and you like to have more than 1500 cards
and if you are a card game fanatic you will also like to sleeve them with
good sleeves so the cards don't wear off which means adding additional 60$
- 70$ for sleeves only. And for those travelers (as I am) the carrying of
the game will not be a headache only if you make some case, box, holders,
tray etc. for those cards.
The comment about the black borders needs to readdressed. I used to play
Magic: The Gathering a decade ago and the basic set had white borders
(Unlimited and Revised). If the borders are white, you won't see the wear,
but you will instead see grime and dirt. Black borders might show some
wear, but you never get the feeling that you have crud on your cards. I
prefer the black borders.
It happens so playing with two players (maybe three as well), although it's
slightly different with four. I got the chance to play a four people round
and it was a lot more fun, hence I assume that a 5 - 7 people game would
much, much more better. Final statement - this game is good and really fun
with 5 and up people though then you need two Dominion and/or Intrigue,
Seaside
@jovtheamazing One thing, the treasure card you get after trashing with
mine goes back to your hand, so you don't lose that from your hand. And
yes, it's supposed to keep decks clean and effective (copper-only decks are
pretty bad, watched a friend of mine pull an 13 action combo today to end
with only 11 coins to spend, 5 coppers which were everything he had and 6
bonus).
@LittleBlackSparrow Let's say you draw your hand, and you have three
treasure cards; they are all coppers and only worth a total of three coin.
Your buying power is limited there. But if you have pulled a gold card,
which is three coins in one card, then you can see that it's worth the six
coin to buy it. Of course, it's a tastier treat to be gobbled up by a thief.
@LittleBlackSparrow Here's the reply to what you were really asking. You
don't really spend money. The Treasue cards (Copper, Silver, Gold) you play
give you money to buy for. But then the Treasure cards go to your discard
pile, which eventuelly will be shuffled into a new draw pile. So Treasure
cards are never used up, they will be played again and again.
Just played for the first time this weekend. Great game, I'll be picking it
up at my FLGS this week. Very easy to learn, tons of replayability. Some of
the art and symbols could have been better (why are copper, silver and gold
not colored copper, silver and gold??), but these are small quibbles, the
game is well balanced and intuitive. Highly recommended.
The box lets you store the cards based upon what they are. Each type has 10
cards. There are a set of cards with a different colored back that is used
to select what cards will make up the game. These remain separate and are
not part of the game play. It's actually all very well organized so you can
quickly build a different 'board' each time you play.
@ntwynn We've tried this strategy under a variety of circumstances and card
lay outs and it almost always works. The only times I was able to win was
under extremely favorable card conditions or with a lot of luck. And the
gold strategy requires absolutely no thought-just keep buying more valuable
treasure cards then buy victory cards to end the game.
Excellet review! Dominion is one of my favourites: simple, varied and
always fun! =) The only downside of this game is that the basic game
doesn't always have much interaction between players, but I think
expansions are doing a great job to change that. I just purchased Alchemy
expansion, and I am SO looking forward to test it. ^^ Boardgames
we play with 5 players by adding 2 more kingdom card piles and ending the
game when 4 are depleted. it works pretty well. also, to reduce wear and
tear on the cards you can put them in sleeves. the cards won't fit in
standard sleeves, but you can get special sized ones to fit. if you don't
wan to spend the money you can always "pile" shuffle.
He talked about up to 25 decks in the box and how you can take certain ones
out to modify gameplay. I was wondering, does each deck have something that
differentiates it from the other decks? Like unique artwork on the back or
something, so you can divide the cards at end game. (I'm referring to the
action cards, obviously)
The comment that he makes in the very end that this game is not playable
with more than 4 player is not entirely true as if you have for instance a
extension like Dominion Intrigue you can set up a game for 5 - 6 player be
adding the number of victory points in the game. The rules explain how that
is done.
So i just finished playing this game online and i dont really see the
replay value that this game has since the 10 decks of cards in play are the
same card in each pile. I found the game fun but i lost because it's my
first time. Do this game has really a replay value that big? And is it
really that fun?
I haven't experienced the problems you've experienced with the sleeves when
I do an overhand shuffle. Perhaps down the road I'll be tempted to spend
$3.60 for a 100 pack of sleeves as well if I get the same problems, but
I've played several games of Dominion and haven't had any problems. Happy
gaming!
If there are ANY Star trek: Deep Space Nine fans who just watched this
review I'm sure you agree with me that it's an amazingly weird and crazy
coincidence that there's a game called DOMINION and that it's made by a
company called RIO GRANDE... wow... sometimes I don't understand the
world...

They are going to stop. There's only one planned expansion left called
"Guilds" and it's going to be a small one. After that, Donald X. doesn't
have another expansion planned. But he said if there was going to be one,
it wouldn't be as planned out as these have been. Maybe a Treasure Chest
expansion that adds cards to each expansion? Maybe a new small theme? We
don't know, but we do know that he's stopping (so far) at Guilds. That
being said, I love this expansion! Better than Prosperity!
Well Venture costs 5, so it competes with other 5 cost cards that are
usually amazing. It's main purpose is to blast through your green, so I
don't really think it's over powered, but you need to get rid of coppers
otherwise it just gives you 2 coin. Mountebank, Noble Brigand, Masquerade,
Ambassador, Saboteur, the Knight Cards, and Rogue all have the potential of
screwing up a Venture deck by either adding coppers or destroying the
Ventures. Lol. Talking about Dominion because it's fun.
I've only played Dark Ages once since buying it last weekend, but I'm
thinking Tom is right as far as this one maybe not playing as well with
other expansions as say, Prosperity. Our first play was one of the longest
games of Dominion I've ever played and with newer Dominion players I can
see that being a distinct downside with the game. Knowing when the game is
not about chasing provinces and when it's time to pursue a 3 pile game end
is not easy - even for veteran players.
Prosperity is the 2ed worst set in dominion because it makes the game take
longer. Cornucopia is the best set because it helps you 4 multiple cards
and no good 2's? Chapel, Haven, Fool's Gold, Pawn? are they bad? NO and
Knights are going to be as good as saboteur (crap) plz estates could go it
to silver i think u can start with the new stuff i'll start with estates
Dominion is and always will be a great game. plz make more expansion!!!!!!
Hmm... Fewer "new rules" here than Seaside (headscrewy duration cards) and
less new slightly broken stuff like "victory chips" (Prosperity - Goons!).
I think it'll work well with older sets mixed in, but we won't know till we
try, Tom! There are enough other cards with trashing for these cards to
shine, I think. I still think that there is only one truly "broken" card in
Dominion... (Venture), so it's still my fave game, I think! X
I guess I'm assuming you wouldn't buy a contraband (or keep copper) if
there is venture on the table. Honestly - maybe a card draw action or two,
something to trash out copper, and a hanful of ventures is very powerful.
Most strategies get sluggish as you but more and more green. Venture
doesn't even see the green in your deck. For sure, the KC KC B B B combo is
mad - but that's a specific 5 card draw. Venture never fails me! X
You're commenting on an online review for the 7th expansion for this game,
yet it seems like you're also trying to talk down to the "fan boys" and
"board game buffs" who play it online? FWIW, on Amazon's Best Sellers in
Board Games list, Dark Ages is currently #6 and Dominion is #10. So it
seems like it's still doing alright IRL, even if it's made a few people
like you grumpy for some reason.
How is Venture broken? It can easily be screwed up by having too many
coppers or by hitting a potion or hitting a Contraband. Plus, it's not very
good for complex actions and combos (seeing as you discard all the cards
before your next treasure). If you want a absurdly strong combo, try Kings
Court-Kings Court-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge in a two player game. That would
beat Venture any day.
I so appreciate Melody taking part in the wrap up. I can only imagine that
holding that box up gets boring after a while. The game itself looks
interesting to me because I like the idea of more choices and I know my
wife will easily go in for more attack-type cards. I'll just put it down as
a future buy for the time being. Need to get more money in my gaming budget
first. :)
Thanks Tom for the review. I was excited about this one, but I think I will
pass. I guess as long as people keep on buying these expansions, they will
keep on making them, but I think I am done. I will spend my money elsewhere
on a new experience like Lords of Waterdeep, Powergrid: First Sparks, or
Smash Up. All three I have been wanting but waiting.
Dominion: Trash. I like it. With that said, this deck seems a little to
complex for my wife and anything that over complicates an already great
game isn't for us. I just don't see us using enough of these cards to
warrant a purchase. Also, it seems you have to use a bunch of these in a
game and can't really mix and match THAT much.
One thing Tom didn't mention that is a real game changer is that there now
is a card that can gain things from the trash (costing from 3-6). So you
could technically use Pillage, trash it, then use the special card to gain
it back, and then use it again later in the game. Dominion is amazing. :D
Nah, I am good where I am. I love reading when people try to act cool by
hating or speaking for the general public. Translation: good for you that
you are bored of dominion, but there are quite a lot that still enjoy it.
When he does this years people's choice top 100 it will end up back at #1.
They'll stop making them soon--there's only one more expansion planned. You
know, unless Donald X gets roped in to making more. I could go either way
on it myself, as I'd love more cards but I also fear an eventual power
creep that outweighs the benefit of having more variety.
Meh. They keep adding expansions that do the same thing over and over.
Maybe vaccarino got a computer and a random generator to spew these. I
would like a revised edition, where he re-balanced the best cards from all
expansions and made a close "definitive" edition.
You are one of a few. Congrats! You should have enough to play for a while,
but chances are you play online more than in real life, because, let's face
it, fan boys and board game "buffs" are the reason this game is still
relatively popular.
You're going to tell someone that "s/he is one of the few" on a mixed
review of the game? I don't know what kind of point you were making, but I
sure hope you aren't surprised that not many people are going to agree with
you.
How about liking the game alot, and having all the expansions and then
realizing you have back issues so you can't lift your set? Welcome to my
world. That is also sadness. Argh! But you are right.
Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to Remodel a card not in the Supply
(like Madman or Spoils) from your hand into a card costing up to 2 more
(like an Estate). Any help would be appreciated.
True and enough, but if you don't like playing with Baron when you have the
shelters out, just don't put Baron in with the randomizers. You can play
with whatever set of ten you want.
A little more complex, but in a very good way. Makes the game deeper, but
not at the expense of a ton of new rules. Disagree with Tom. This is the
best expansion to date.
Actually, he is still working on them. Planned doesn't mean finished.

You're welcome! Really any of them change the dynamics of possibility.
Depending on what you're looking for, each expansion has a different theme
or mechanic: Intrigue: more attack cards and different things with victory
cards Seaside: duration cards and interesting deck manipulation cards
Alchemy: cards with multiple effects and requires some thinking Prosperity:
interesting treasure cards and game lengthening mechanic Cornucopia: unique
effects and unique cards ...
The shuffle dictates whether we use Prosperity victory and treasure cards.
The game's strategy actually changes depending on if you are trying to get
Provinces or Colonies, because it will affect the length of the game and
the dynamics of choices for card choices. If we used Platinums and Colonies
every shuffle, then we would only be limited to the strategies presented
with them all the time.
Hinterlands: unique effects that "combo" well with other thing (but you may
need more expansions to make the combos work) Dark Ages: Trash effects,
different starting cards (instead of Estates), and "Ruins" (alternative to
"Curses")
nice video why srent you playing with prosperity victory cards?

Hi, thanks for the Beginner's tutorial. BTW, you short-changed "Jen" a
couple times between the 32:00 mins mark & end of this first video (see her

Funny I was just editing a video with Jen in it and she jokes I cheat to win all the time. Playing two people in my head trips me up sometimes. Luckily the screw ups would not effect the end game to much. Thanks for watching and pointing it out to me I have added annotations for the mistakes.
