No, I don't think that's how it works Dan. While I agree that you probably won't save them all on your 1st playthrough simply due to a lack of knowledge of causes and effects, I don't think it's actually linked directly to picking up totems. I'm pretty sure they're just there to give you warnings. If you recall, when you first picked one up, it said something along the lines of them giving you prophecies of the future, but whether or not they come to fruition depends on how you play, meaning they are not absolute. At least, that's what it seems like.
