High School Athlete Makes An Extraordinary Show of Grace and Sportsmanship
Something extraordinary happened at an Ohio high school track meet. One student athlete actually carried a collapsed runner over the finish line. Was this an ...
And another thing, since you clearly have never spent a great amount of
time preparing for any great competition, and since I have, I would say it
would definitely be a sacrifice I would honor. If I were collapsed on the
track, and the gracious racer behind me stopped to pick me up and said in
my ear "Come on, let's get you across that finish line" I would probably
cry tears of immense joy that I was allowed to finish not-last, considering
this is one of the most important races I'd have been in
first needs to be said that insult at the end of your comment was weak
either come up with a good one or don't bother insulting and be polite.
Second, as I said you have no idea what it means to be an athlete crossing
a street is not near as important as a state competition that you spent all
year trying to get into, maybe even all your high school years in some
cases. I know plenty of people who would rather be helped like this girl
was, because somethings are more important than feeling good.
I'm going to disagree with you guys. I don't disprove of Meghan's action,
for she has freedom of choice. But what if she was in second place? Yes,
she could have still helped her opponent up, but it is almost certain that
she wouldn't have. The fact is, the only reason why Meghan helped the other
girl is because she was already dead last. With dozens of spectators on the
sideline, the girl needed absolutely no help from Meghan. Meghan sacrificed
nothing, and only "helped" to boost her own ego.
So it's her fault she was possibly suffering from heat exhaustion? And
another thing. Do you /really/, /honestly/ think that someone like an
athletic runner has never fallen and skinned their knee or broken a bone
before? Do you really think that such would be a new experience for someone
like that? 5 bucks says the fallen runner has collapsed from heat
exhaustion before, and it is not a new experience. As such, I believe she
had the toughness to be able to take exhaustion for about 20 feet.
I agree with what y'all said, but I have to disagree with what Stephen said
about what a sacrifice is. Because, I would hold that a soldier dying for
his country is a sacrifice even though he does value the good of the
country over his own life. And a parent saving to put their kid through
college is sacrificing even though they value their child's education more
than a new car. Just like Jesus' death was a sacrifice even though he
valued our salvation more than he valued his life on earth.
Taking care of yourself is natural and understood. Everyone should strive
to take care of themselves and achieve for themselves. It's natural to do
so. It's extra to be willing/able to help others as well. No matter how
good you are at sustaining yourself, at achieving for yourself, it's good
to know that you live in a society in which others are willing to to help
once in a while. If someone saves your life from tragedy, and you can go on
achieving as an individual, it's a good thing, no?
The best definition of sacrifice is giving up something good for something
better. A soldier giving up his life IS a sacrifice. Parents giving up
their wants to put their kids through school IS a sacrifice. Meagan gave up
2nd to last place to help a fellow competitor. Please explain the
sacrifice. She didn't give up anything good. She gave up something crappy
to do something good. "eh, I'm going to lose anyway, why not help her out."
Not much of a selfless act, but still a good act.
No she shouldn't have kicked her, but it certainly would not have made her
a bad runner if she had simply jumped over her and kept on running. I agree
that she made a personal decision which is her right, but I have to wonder
if she made that choice based on the "everybody wins" way kids are taught
now. This shows that there is a fin line between sportsmanship and
political correctness. I don't often quote Mr. Worf from Star Trek but "If
winning is not important, why keep score"?
Love Trifecta - this is the first time I have strongly disagreed with you
guys. A soldier who "gives" his life in battle does so because he realizes
that his life is only worth living if he is to be free. Giving your life
because you hold any number of others above yourself, is not selfish - it
is altruistic (anti-selfish.) Part of running a race includes the risk that
you could fall flat on your face. The fall is a signal a mistake. Allowing
her to win is an act of injustice.
apparently YOU have never treated anyone for heat exhaustion or dehydration
let me ask YOU a question, woman waiting at a crosswalk falls looks
confused what do you do give her medical attention right there and now or
pick her up and drag her across the street? IF the woman had "finshed" this
race and later on had a heat induced brain seizure and died your little
sheeple ass would say "why didnt the emts treat her immediately" Apparently
you have never been a serious thinker.
Steve pointed that out in his answer that starts at about 6:30. She didn't
give up very much. That's not the real point. The point is seeing something
other than an enemy in another person. The point is that leftists see
conservatives as wanting to win at all costs and crush competition, when we
really believe that competition (and the fact that girl was beating her) is
more important than taking advantage of a technicality (injury, misstep,
whatever happened).
Also, I would like to remind you of something. You said the following:
"apparently YOU have never treated anyone for heat exhaustion or
dehydration" And 9 comments later I said this: "So it's her fault she was
possibly suffering from heat exhaustion?" So, if you still have room in
that liberal brain of yours, what this means is that YOU believed she had
suffered from heat exhaustion before I said ANYTHING about it. I did not
diagnose her ANY more than you did.
What is wrong with people? The reason this is admirable behavior has
nothing to do with sacrifice. It's a matter of an individual forgetting
herself for a minute and choosing to consider another person's dignity.
That girl outraced her for 99% of a 3200 meter race; and she chose to honor
that, instead of making sure she didn't finish last. It would be stupid to
drop out of a leading position to do this, but that's not the reality of
the situation.
Well, considering your blatant disregard for EVERYTHING I just said, I'll
say it in more clear English for you. Pay attention, or you might miss the
important bits: Yes, Arden McMath finished the race, and yes, I believe
Meghan Vogel did the right and courteous thing by helping her across the
line. Now, if you still think you can keep up, I'd like to remind you that
you have never participated in a race like this, nor have you prepared for
one.
dear phillip I firmly believe that the fallen runner should have given
medical attention right then and there no matter what you or 0maloy1 think.
I also believe that if you fall and skin your knee out there on the track
you will probably cry like a twilight fan but in between sobs let me ask
YOU a question, did this fallen runner really finish? if you cant even
cross the finish line on your own is it a true measure of your athletic
ability?
Compassion is a big part of the American experience. Who doesn't feel good
when they reach into their pocket or wallet and puts money into a Red Cross
or Salvation Army bucket? We do that willingly and it makes us feel good
that we're helping someone else. But when you take compassion too far, as
liberals do, you replace human compassion with government redistribution.
Simply put, liberals take compassion and turn it into armed robbery.
When you put it like that, yes. Whether it was immediately needed or not
though is not said in this video. Also getting back to a bit more of the
main idea of the topic, their are more important things then onces safety
and health. I'm sure you have met some serious athletes in your time, I
remember quite a few who would drive themselves to the point of collapsing
for a stupid medal. It was more important to them then their own safety.
Okay, I'm going to be a contrarian on this one. Being a fallen runner is
not a big deal. It's a normal part of life. Helping her to the finish line
didn't accomplish anything for the fallen runner. She didn't achieve it on
her own. Failure is part of life. It's a normal and *healthy* part of life.
Check out Arnold Schwarznegger's video "Secrets to Success Part 1". Failure
is a beautiful thing in the path to improvement.
Did Meghan know the rules? Well, she broke the rules by helping the fallen
girl who, by the way, had plenty of help on the sidelines had Meghan not
helped her. What if Meghan had been in second place behind the fallen girl?
Would she have done the same deed? In any case, true compassion, self
reliance, consideration and self sacrifice are values too few Americans
exhibit anymore.
never said it was her fault/ I believe i said YOU would cry like a twilight
fan. no one else. I applaud you sir not only were you able to diagnose her
merely from a youtube video but you also know her medical history as well.
i have asked you and 0Maloy1 very simple questions you refuse to answer let
me ask again, did this fallen runner really finish the race? yes or no?
yeah - charity always involves someone carrying someone else. which is
really great when the person doing the carrying does so of their own free
will and goodness. like most virtues, however, charity is easily turned to
vice. as soon as you point a gun at someone and tell them to be
"charitable", its no longer charity, its....something else...something
evil...
LOL this you make me laugh, rabichevy. You're butthurt because you believe
she needed medical attention and someone else believes differently than
you. Nevermind the idea that the person you're "debating" with has more
experience in the matters of opinion regarding an athlete, you just wanna
stir up shit and you can't find somewhere better to do it.
You might like to think that being a liberal will allow you to get away
with contradictory statements and blatant disregarding of ideas already
presented, but we conservatives are not that stupid. Present a coherent
case, or you will lose my respect and the respect of any thinking person
who reads this back-and-forth dialogue between us.

All you need to know about Sophia is that she was chosen by movie producers
at the age of 10 to be in a movie based on a Stephen Sondheim play. 10
years old. They didn't do that because she was cute or had been on TV. They
did it because she has a tremendous amount of talent. Because she
auditioned repeatedly and was better than other girls her age and older. In
the end she pulled out of that movie but there will be others. Her career
is just starting and if she continues to get better as she gets older you
could see her win Grammys, Tony's, Olivier's and perhaps Oscar's and
BAFTA's. And it all started with a youtube video and a performance on the
Ellen Show. We shall see if that all happens. But if it does, remember your
comments here. Peace in.
It's a fucking knock. It doesn't have to be right.
