+Robdahelpa thank you. I would imagine it is quite likely I will do occlusion work at some point. I am going to be extremely weak for a few weeks so starting with a lighter weight is inevitable. It makes sense to capitalise on the hypertrophic response through BFR training if I can. :)
Ben what do you and or your doctor think caused it? Did you have any pain
or inflammation in your elbow or arm before the injury? Think it was lack
of recovery... Form...
+Sam Adams It was a 2.5kg increase from the workout before which was the same weight as the workout before that. All in all I think it was the fifth session on that programme. The weights were increased in a linear fashion. No significant changes to reps, sets, RPE etc.It was pretty heavy work in the 4-6 rep range. That is the most likely thing I can attribute it to.
Thanks for taking us along the recovery road, this will be a great resource
to many people. Wishing you a speedy and successful recovery brother, stay
strong!
+c@b@ll3ro thank you. I was kind of reluctant to do this video series (I talk more about why in the video coming tomorrow) so I hope it is valuable for some. :)
VLog Weeks 5-16: Recovery Following Distal Bicep Tendon Rupture Surgery
//facebook.com/bencarpenterpersonaltraining //instagram.com/bdccarpenter //twitter.com/bdccarpenter Here is the video log update for my recovery ...
I'm 18 weeks post op distal bicep tendon rupture. I noticed you mentioned
trying to play hockey in this video. Im an avid gym goer n ice hockey
player but my dr is giving me a hard time in giving me clearance to go back
to hockey. My arm feels strong enough, still some pain in my wrist and some
weird feelings in my arm. Wondering ur thoughts on me getting back to
hockey at 18 weeks post op. Any advice or suggestion would be highly
appreciated.
+Ron Parmeter thanks Ron! Appreciate ur feedback and advice. And ur absolutely right. Why risk it now at this point. I admire all ur achievements and success in the training world. Good luck in ur competitions/training and someone I admire w all u have accomplished. All the best!
Happy to hear your recovery is going good. Personally, I would hold off until the 24 week mark to be safe. But then again, I did start pulling heavy at 20 weeks post op. You have made it this far, what's a couple of more weeks to be on the safe side.
I just had distal bicep tendon repair surgery done 14 days ago. I'm just
now on a brace similar to yours. Generally the only time I feel pain is
when I (even slightly) pronate or supinate my hand. And then, OMG that
hurts like nothing I've ever felt. I did it training in grappling. Never
has any submission hurt like simply rotating my hand. It's like someone is
hitting my forearm with a hammer.
Thanks for chronicling your experience, Ron.
I just saw your videos on your road to recovery. I had shoulder surgery on
march 2013 on my left shoulder. after surgery I felt very hopeless because
of how my arm looked. it was gone. I just saw that it isn't only shoulder
surgery s that makes your entire arm loose muscle but any kind of surgery
in your arm will affect your whole arm. I wanted to know how you did it to
get your full tricep muscle back. what exercises did you do? How long did
it take? and how is your bicep today? does it feel or look different. I
also feel that I am never going back to the bodybuilding world again. I
feel hopeless it will really help if you reply thank you
Jose. I just saw this comment. The volume in my arms took quite sometime to get back to normal. I honestly think shoulder surgery is a much longer/harder recovery then what I went through. I can understand why you were disappointed, but stick with it.
Anthony. It definitely took me a while to get the same pump in my arm. And I became very aware of any weird twinge or achy feeling. I am still not completely over that and fear tearing it again. So I am unsure how long it will take to get over that feeling. But I can relate on the muscle not feeling the same.
Hey Ron, I had the surgery on Dec 1st, about 5 weeks ago. Though I'm not a
body builder, I am a guitar player and had the surgery on my right
arm....my picking hand! So given that I am at week 5 since surgery, what
do you remember about the period. I am being cautious but I know my body,
too. The doctors have told me to "limit" my guitar playing. It's driving
me nuts not to play. The pain I'm experiencing isn't in the actual
surgical area but mostly in my shoulder and my wrist/forearm. I have
numbness in my forearm along the radius bone. The doctors have told me
that is par for the coarse. Anyway, any input would greatly be
appreciated.
I had the same pain in my wrist and forearm. So I believe this to be normal. It also took me several weeks to get my grip strength back. So don't be disappointed.. just give it time
This reminds me of Goku from Dragonball Z season 2 when he was all bandaged
up and still working out at the hospital even though he had months of
recovery left haha.
i never used steroids yet im strong but i had same injury as him few days
ago because of too much strees on right arm which cause of i trying lift
car

Wow a video that says 2012 that actually was made in 2012! Anyone else do
searches on jay cutler 2012 and get results of vids that SAY in the title
2012 but you start the vid and notice that jay still looks like he's fresh
off his 2001 controversial loss to the great RC and he has a brush back
bowl cut lol...to the people that keep clooging youtube with that bs that
has already been posted under a different name 5+ years ago, FUUUUCK
YOUUUUUU!
Wow this was so helpful. My boyfriend is going for surgery next week and he
has no idea what to expect. Id really like to touch base to learn more
about your journey.
Thanks for the motivation! I just went through the same injury just
yesterday and I was doing the same thing although it's part of my job as a
mechanic in the army. Its something I have done hundreds of times in the
past five years and yesterday was my day. Watching your video has given me
a better outlook on my fitness journey. Again Thank you for sharing!
I appreciate this vid and the information. I had my cast removed post-op
yesterday. The timeline you present and the photos do provide a positive
light to a tough injury. Thanks again....
Such a good video dude. Very motivating. I'm 2 weeks post op bicep tendon
tear, same injury. Arm is skinny as. Glad you posted those pictures, gives
me hope to get the muscle back.
Ron, 1 week ago today ruptured the distal tendon of my left bicep. I have
been training heavy for 17 years. I have come back from injuries before
but not this bad. Im having surgery in the next few days. at 32 with a
wife and not being able to work with the injury, is it worth it anymore.
its not as much of can I come back but should I come back. should I just
be normal and do normal workouts for fitness. did you wrestle with this
idea?
I completely understand what you mean. For about a week I was so discouraged that I felt like this may not be the lifestyle I want to live anymore. If you have been training 17 years you have a built-in mindset which resolves around the gym. Your level of discouragement will get much worse the next few weeks. When you hit that point you will realize how much training and your physical appearance plays a role in your daily life. Then you will be ready to grind again and get back to where you were. So yes, I felt the same way but you will overcome that. Best of luck with your surgery!
