hi i wanted to ask what do you call yourself to the kitties do call
yourself mom or mommy and how do feel about being called mom to them ? i
call myself mom to my kitty lady just wanted to hear your thoughts? thanks
+lynnshell78 Sometimes it might be best to not know how they see us. LOL. But, they must really like us in their own individual ways. They follow us from room to room, soaking up our attention. I often feel like the sun and they are sunflowers.... :D The relationship is most definitely symbiotic.
+lynnshell78 In recent years, that's definitely the trend and with kitten buyers, I make use of it since I needed to have some way to refer to them in regards to their new kitten. So, yes, I guess I refer to myself the same way when talking to other cat people, but in reality, I probably don't identify with the term "mom" as much as some do. I am definitely their slave, though :D ... I guess that's the same thing as a mom.
The next kitties I get I'm going to go this route. I know it'll be time
consuming, but in the end I think it's far, far, far better for the cats.
When you look at what cats like lions, tigers, etc. get in the wild, what
you're doing for your brood Molly is tantamount to that. I think it makes
for healthier kitties than all that filler crap you get in the canned and
bagged foods. I feed my little girl Royal Canin Senior Consult that has all
the nutrients for an older cat, but I think a diet like what you give to
your babies is so much more in tune with nature's best.
That's the rub, right? My boy was a Lilac-Point Himmie. I had a Lilac Persian and the same thing. He had to finally have the operation to make his urethra more like that of the female cat. My baby girl is happy, healthy and very vocal. She's a Tortie=point Himmie. I'm right now knitting her a banky for her cat bed. Yeah, I'm actually doing that!
+obscuremedia Oh no! The catch 22 with the diets for struvite crystals ... esp. for Persians I've read, but I don't know from personal experience, but that the formula pushes their balance over to the oxalate which are much more difficult to treat.. I'm glad your kitty is okay.
As I said Guelph is the real star here. They believe that all natural is the best. Yes, their foods do have some fillers, but the canned food is all natural. I know for me my bully boy had both kinds of crystals. The first kind he had was the struvite crystals because of the Hills I'd been feeding him since kittenhood. He was six years old when he contracted the struvite. Then I took him to another vet who told me to feed him the Iams dry food. It was the "PH Balanced". And I put that in quotes deliberately because I really don't feel it was. Due to feeding him that he contracted the calcium oxilate crystals and almost died. I ended up taking him to another vet (third one) and he did some research (the only one who did) and even called Guelph and a feline dietitian who told him about this canned variant to a totally balanced diet in terms of it being wet food, but also had natural ingredients. The main ones were chicken, salmon (and boy did it smell) and the bone you put in your mix in this video. It also had some innards like liver, hearts, chicken neck, etc. The upshoot of it all was he vastly improved almost immediately. I'd feed him four times a day on it, leaving the dry alternative down throughout the day. That was what was called Medi-Cal. The name was changed to Royal Canin about three or four years ago. My boy died in 2006 of something completely unassociated with the crystal problem. In fact he never got stopped up again, and the output in terms of his stool was considerably less with no overt smell. My little girl now was on the kitten Development of the Medi-Cal/Royal Canin till she was shifted to the Adult. Given she's now 13 years old, she's now on the Senior Consult. Unfortunately with her, we tried her on the canned but she just will not eat it. She walks away. You pretty much have to start them when they're little She's so set in her ways now she tells me what she wants.
+obscuremedia interesting! When I started feeding raw, I was in contact with several Canadian cat breeders who helped me with advice, encouragement, etc. The Canadians were WAY ahead of the U.S. on the raw feeding thing ... In fact I initially got my feet wet with a supplement mix from a Canadian supplier who'd formulated all that was need to add to meat to make a balanced raw diet for cats.. I eventually sourced my own supplements, but used their recipe. //tcfeline.com/ .... sounds like you are still leading the pack.
While it may be a pain in the ankle to have to do all the prep work, the rewards in the overall health of the kitties is the key. I live in Canada, so the requirements are a little more important in terms of the veterinary diets. Guelph Veterinary College has been doing amazing work in trying to get foods that are closer to what you're doing, and some of them are really good. Some aren't the good like the Hills diets. I've had at least two cats that had the crystals in the urine way too many times. And my last little boy had so many eye issues due to the lack of taurine in the diet. So I think in the end the success in them actually taking to the food is what is the best thing. I'm doing my due diligence in terms of starting my research. Your videos are without a doubt precious to those of us who really do want the best for our babies.
That was kind of my thinking... in 2004, although a lot of people were feeding the raw diet, it wasn't as well known as it is now. It was SO scary for me to go off the beaten path. Up until then it's not something I would have ever done. But I had a kitty with chronic diarrhea and I'd tried everything else.... When her diarrhea cleared up after I got her on the raw food, there was no going back. Now, it's pretty routine for me, but I sure missed the convenience of just having a feeder of dry food out all the time. By the time your 'next kitties' arrive, you'll have even more choices of good diet to buy at even more reasonable prices... you many not decide to go to this kind of work. My sister is feeding Nature's Variety Instinct to her 4 cats and 2 dogs and finds it even easier than before... the same food for both species, convenient nugget sized pieces so it's easy to measure out, and not can's all over the place... and much less odor in general.
