SOCIOLOGY - Émile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim was a French 19th century sociologist who focused on what modern capitalism does to our minds - and concluded that it might, quite literally, ...
Personally, I disagree with the notion that science can't bring us
together. If you've ever heard Carl Sagan's "The Pale Blue Dot" you know
exactly what I'm talking about. Take for example the image of Earth rising
over the Lunar landscape. That image of our world gave a new perspective of
what it means to be alive on this Earth. We landed on the moon and got this
image in 1969. From 1970-73 we saw incredible progress in thinking of the
planet and humanity as a whole. In these years we saw the passage of the
Clean Air Act, the birth of the EPA, the formation of Doctor's without
borders, etc. I posit that this image which showed a world without borders
with beautiful landscapes, and not as simply a place where nations war was
largely responsible for these developments.
interesting videos ... i thank you for this amazing work, but what do you
think about making videos concerning the pioneers of Chicago school?? like
E.Park, Louis Wirth, Burgess...and their theories about urban ethnology and
sociology .... i guess it would be really educational don't you think so?
thanks so much for your videos i really enjoy them and find them immensely
useful, i am doing a sociology and psychology course with the hope of doing
anthropology at uni and your a bit like a second tutor, could i ask a
favour/ question i have to write an article from the point of view of a
journalist in 1984 that outlines and evaluates how Marxism, feminism and
post modernism have presented society before and after the holocaust, can
you suggest any writers or thinkers i should look at. id be massively
grateful
The word capitalism is not to be found in Durkheim's suicide book. But
rather in De Botton mouth induced by his systematic, annoying, clumsy left
bias.
Each instance of "capitalism" should be understood as "modern society".
Capitalism is much much much older than the industrial revolution, thanks.
+Mr English We are supporters of a very different sort of capitalism than the one we have today. Do take a look at the capitalism section of www.thebookoflife.org
It depends on the area. I'd look at a bunch of these videos and see what takes your fancy. For an overall perspective, Bertrand Russell published a History of Western Philosophy that gives a broad overview of the field. An easier read is Alain de Botton's Consolations book but only covers five or so philosophers and their philosophical contribution to living well.
+Calcipher Cartographer Definitely. In most of these, only one key theme has been selected to elaborate upon to characterise the author's work. Much of philosophy's true merit lies in the minute and in-between points the authors touch upon as they draw to their final conclusion. Elementary Forms of Religious Life is a nice entry point to Durkheim if you want something different to what is offered here
+Calcipher Cartographer Can't hurt, but at least you have a head-start on understanding what they were talking about. Often the actual text is very difficult to permeate.
