@andykiad3 the contest doesn't end for awhile! i mean it could win but i think there are some big known editors entering so i don't think i have a big chance.

Sorry, would love to but I am still trying to sell the idea. For now I can tell you this. - Dictionary is in the GPU memory encoded and indexed in a way that allows fast word matching. - Puzzle is not filling from "beginning", but from heuristically selected "hardest" position. - Then it searches positions that are "most influenced" by selected set, and selects again "hardest" one to solve. - Multiple word matches are sorted, and remembered, so on backtracking dictionary is usually not searched

My first attempts were in putting blacks when there are no more words to be filled. In a way simplifying the problem when there is no solution. But then I realized that most crossword puzzles have symmetrical organization of black fields, so for this algorithm I have added possibility to put blacks in advance, or fill in some letters if you like. Additionally I have created a small algorithm that puts blacks for you. What you see here are templates taken from one very popular newspaper.

One more thing. Algorithm is working on horizontal words only, by trying to preserve as much as possible vertical words. So, sorting of the matches is done by calculating how many vertical words match is allowing, and letter by letter, because some letters are more "valuable" in crossword puzzle making world.
