After watching the Gyroscopic Instruments U.S. Navy Training Film, it
appears that this gyro is constructed to only allow movement around two
axes, the lateral and the longitudinal, but not the vertical. Is that
true?

2. Rigidity is only a property that allows a spinning mass to remain
aligned in space, given freedom of movement. Rigidity can be resisted by a
force, which is when precession takes place. 3. You are right that
gyroscopes are affected by rigidity and precession simultaneously. Ideally
the directional indicator is operated only by rigidity. However precession
results as forces are transferred through friction in the bearings. The DI
drifts as a result making it necessary to adjust more often.
You raise some good questions. Notice a few points. 1. Each gimble allows
the freedom of movement in one plane of rotation. The Heading Indicator has
three gimbles, but the turn indicator has only two. Thus the turn indicator
does not allow freedom of movement in the yawing plane. Any force in the
yawing plane will not be negated by the gimble, but transferred to the
gyroscope. In that case precession occurs as a result.
why doesn't the heading indicator (and attitude indicator) act on
precession? Shouldn't a yaw movement as showed starting at around 1:20 push
the gyro to precess the force 90 degrees and thus make it rotate like the
gyro in the turn/slip indicator? And why doesn't the gyro in the turn and
slip indicator remain rigid in space? Aren't gyroscopes supposed to be
affected by rigidity in space and precession simultaneously?
Actually, yes. Or you can use a vertically aligned gyroscope DI (this one
is horizontal, vertical are more useful around polar regions). A vertically
aligned DI will experience maximum topple at the equator. Thus at the
equator it would change its reading 15.04 degrees per hour due to the
rotation of the earth, decreasing this rate towards the poles (by the
cosine of the latitude).

At 2:17 it explains that the gyroscope remains pointed in the same
direction in space as the plane goes around the Earth it still remains
pointed the same way. For Flat Earth conspiracy theorists this is proof
that the Earth is round, not flat. If you don't believe this video, then
you need to go up in an airplane and prove it's flat. To compensate for
this on modern aircraft they use a computer. Here's a brief explanation:

Gravity moves the vanes. The axis of the gyro is vertical and therefore perpendicular to the horizon. An attitude indicator uses the principle of rigidity in space. The gyro maintains its orientation as the aircraft essentially maneuvers around it. If the axis drifts from the vertical gravity acts on the pendulous vanes to precess the axis back to vertical. I'm afraid I don't have any recommendation for a gyro to use in your experiment other than to check with an aircraft instrument repair station at an airport in your area. I would like to know how your experiment turns out. It sounds quite interesting.Good luck.
+2degreewca Thank you for your reply sir.So if I understand you correctly, the gyro chamber is kept at a positive air pressure to allow the exhaust drift correction system to work, and the force of a turn or unlevel (in relation to gyro orientation) attitude is enough to overcome the force of the exhaust drift correction system, thus it would not need to differentiate between a movement of the plane and the apparent drift of the rotation of the earth. (?)Assuming that is all correct would this system only work in level straight flight?The reason I am asking all of this is because I want to try an experiment for a physics class to see if I can determine my latitude from measuring the apparent drift of the gyroscope over a 6 hour period.In order to do my experiment I need to find a gyroscope that does not have a correction system, or find a way to disable it.Any recommendations on what to look for gyro wise?Thanks again for your reply.
In an air-driven attitude gyro, there are "pendulous vanes" suspended from pivotsattached to the lower portion of the sealed gyro housing, one vane for eachexhaust port. The vanes are positioned so that, when the gyro is erect, eachvane half-covers its associated exhaust port. If the gyro tilts (or drifts) so that its axle is not plumb, the pendulous vanes shiftso that one exhaust port is more-than-half-covered and the opposite exhaustport is less-than-half-covered. The resulting imbalance of discharge air exertsa force on the rotor housing at right angles to the direction of tilt, causingthe gyro to precess to the erect position. If the gyroscopic force is the only thing needed as a measure of balancing
force if a counter wieght is applied to the bottom of the gyroscope it
shall keep it in a centered way according to gravity. I feel gyrosopic
flying machines could be created in a manner similar to the helicopter yet,
with an inside force when affected on the outside by wind allowing for
control of pitch essentially gliders could be utilized as flying machines.
With several gyroscopes set accordingly I believe a hover effect could very
truly become produced and in affecting pitch in a gyroscope left without a
wieght to keep it in accordance with gravity it essentially would have the
abitity to yew and roll all very fast. Antigravity technology would further
allow gyroscopes to make massive gains in perpetual motion and give the
craft an ability to infinitely hover or fly without need for landing or any
type of refueling until and repairs are needed. Solor power for controls
would also be very benificial. Space travel and air travel would
essentiallybe moved into a new age of travel and off world habitation. I
predict the moon could be colonized in months duer to the ability for the
craft to further at much great speeds then a spaceship. Godspeed!

have you crashed it ? what happened that made it perform like that? sounds like it could be a motor issue or you need to recalibrate it. I'd recalibrate it before I did anything else.
I'm really glad I found your video, I've been struggling to get my quad

One small point, at no time was mass ever changed in this demonstration.
They were however trying to change the angular momentum. In the first
demonstration it was by changing radius and not mass, which did not change
the momentum, it just changed the rate of rotation to conserve the
momentum. In the second it is by changing the plane of rotation of the
wheel in the suitcase. Probably want to make sure your explanation is
actually accurate.
