@TOMP66666 cia also overthrew democratic leaders in argentina, iran and many other latin american countries so dont act like it was all kennedy's fault. the cia went behind JFKs back and tried to kill castro even after he and his brother ordered them not to. reagan is the rights hero right now but funded the taliban, let pakistan go nuclear, helped traffic in millions of pounds of cocaine and other narcotics, ran guns and other weapons to latin america and iran, he let big business take over gov

When JFK died I lost my faith and became an atheist. I was only 12. I knew then that here was a man of such gifts of spirit, wit and intelligence that his timeless message would echo down the corridors of history and well into the future. He was way ahead of his time and many of his stances and speeches would not have been out of place in today's fractured world. If I were naive enough to believe in divine fiat, I would have said that this unique and special man was god's envoy on earth....

@ac998 I agree completely. After the Cuban Missile Crisis he should have won the Nobel Peace Prize. But even if they passed him up in that year, surely one year later he should have won the Nobel Peace Prize for this speech and the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. But they gave the prize to Martin Luther King instead. I would have preferred that it go to JFK. MLK had a few more years left to win that prize. It should have gone to JFK in 1964.

He did not carry it out. NO matter how well intentioned the Cuban Exile community was in tihs endeavour, it is not the policy of any nation to allow any group in exile to dictate national policy. If the USA wanted to invade Cuba, and overthrow Castro, they would not have relied upon 1,500 well intentioned people to invade a territory the size of Florida- Dumb. Noble, but Dumb. And Kennedy did not get sucked into it. And American shouldn't.

in regards to the bay of pigs, the CIA went against kennedy in that event. They mislead kennedy and tried to provoke war with cuba. THe same happened in teh cuban missle crisis with the soviet union. Thus, kennedy fired his directors-changed toward a more peaceful policy and planned to withdrawl from vietnam. All these reason were part of why he was shot.

The moment Kennedy says "that's not the position you took, however..." Focus on Nixon's face 9:17 And then, you got to love the smirk Kennedy gives at the end of the video.

Kennedy clearly won the TV debates. He was a great President, and from 1964 to 1968 he would have transformed the US. It's surely no coincidence that several future presidents were very closely related to his assasination: Johnson, of course; Nixon was in Dallas the very day, Ford was a member of the Warren Comission, and there's evidence that Bush sr. was in Dallas too as a CIA man. Probably the most tragic day in modern US history, 22nd november 1963, even more so than 9/11.

+Nicholas LoGrasso Kennedy was definitely not a saint. I won't go into his private life, because so many presidents had extramarital affairs (not always with women) that there's no point going there. You are right about Kennedy's mistakes. He did many. Bay of Pigs, Moongoose...His dubious election in Texas and Chicago, his father's mob ties. I would add that he wasn't a particulary successful President when it came to working with congress. LBJ was much more effective. But I completely disagree that he would have gone down in history as a mediocre President. He had many qualities. One of them is that he was learning. He wasn't the same President in 1961 and in 1963. He truly learnt from his mistakes. That's rare in a statesman. Nixon certainly wasn't one who learnt. It's also really unfair to compare Nixon/ Khruschev kitchen debate with Kennedy's Vienna Summit. The former was a lighthearted unscheduled encounter, Nixon wasn't President, and the late 50s weren't the early 60s (post U2 incident, post Cuba, in the middle of the Berlin crises). The latter was a much more serious affair. In any case, Kruschev was seizing Kennedy up and there was little JFK or any President could have done. The Cuban missile crises would have certainly turned out differently had Nixon been President. JFK handling of that crises was one of his great achievements really. The fact that the world survived. There's much debate, but most likely his Vietnam policies wouldn't have been the same as LBJ's had he lived. It's not possible to tell if he would have become a great President, but his leadership qualities were there from day one. He inspired a whole generation, and contributed to shape the 60s as a decade of change. His inaugural address is remembered as one of the great speeches by a President. Nixon's first inaugural address only showed how two faced the man was: he wanted to be a "peacemaker" and went on to bomb the hell out of Vietnam and invade Cambodia.

+Nicholas LoGrasso I agree that Kennedy was (and still is) massively overrated, both in terms of his personal integrity and political accomplishments, but are you sure Nixon was a "far more capable president"? I respect his vision and skill on foreign policy, because establishing relations with communist China did help to end the Cold War in the long run, but his paranoia and his disrespect of the rule of law not only brought him down politically, but also contributed to even greater public cynicism about the United States' political system and moral legitimacy, wouldn't you agree? And I'm not only referring to Watergate (although I do believe that it was a serious matter), I'm thinking mainly about the way Nixon deliberately misled the country on ending the Vietnam War, with a rhetoric of "peace with honor" that didn't match the harsh reality of him maintaining american ground troops presence there for political reasons (his own re-election in '72). Of course, this general cynicism really began under Johnson and the lies that got the US into the Vietnam War in the first place (namely, believing that military intervention was worth it in that case and defending to the end that victory was possible there), but I don't think that excuses Nixon from the responsibility he had as president of respecting the basic institutions of the country and being truthful to the american people. I'm asking you to elaborate on Nixon's record and political standing because I'm genuinely intrigued by your position, I'm not aiming for a "gotcha" moment or anything like that. I just enjoy discussing American history and politics, I've been reading about it for three or four years and I find it fascinating (my main sources are the Miller Center website and various political/biographical books on the presidents). :) In my humble opinion, Nixon was probably the smartest republican president of the 20th century (Bush 41 would be "second place" in that category for me), although I don't think I would have voted for either of them, had I been alive back then. Currently, my favorite presidents of the post-war period are Eisenhower and Bill Clinton, because they seemed to adapt well to the "political climate" of their respective times but were still able to lead on important issues. I know Clinton is a polemic choice, given how recent his presidency is and the fact that it had the Lewinsky scandal and the financial deregulation, but it seems to me that, on balance, he handled the economy well and dealt with most of the foreign conflicts and crisis of the nineties. If you'd like to give your opinion on that and also name your own favorite post-war presidents, I'd like it very much! Oh, and I'm sorry about any grammar errors, I'm a 21-year-old brazilian Sociology student and my english is a little "rusty".

Kennedy was not a progressive visionary. On the contrary, he authorized a coup against Diem in South Vietnam in order to Americanize the war. It was his actions in Operation Mongoose that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He didn't win the election fairly and utilized the mafia to steal vital votes in Illinois and Texas. He performed extremely poorly in the Vienna Summit and wasn't strong enough to resist Khrushchev (something Nixon did in the Kitchen Debate) On top of all that, he was an immoral human being personally, the extent of his womanizing is vast and repulsive. He would have gone down in history as a mediocre president with particularly good PR relations if it hadn't been for his assassination that elevated his status to "Camelot" Say what you want about Nixon, but he was a far more capable president with many more accomplishments under his belt than Kennedy.

Seriously??? An overrated president's death is more tragic than being attacked unexpectedly by terrorists on 9/11??? More innocent lives were lost on that day than on 11/22/1963, and it was 9/11 that threw a question at us on whether we could stand strong against terrorism. Just pointing it out.

Thanks to the Bay of Pigs, Kennedy by October 1962 had a profound mistrust of the military and the CIA, who were all telling him to attack Cuba. Had he done what everyone around him wanted him to do, we surely wouldn't be here, He stood his ground and managed to negotiate his way out of that mess. He realised the soviets had a point, quoting his own speech, "the purpose of the bases in Turkey could be none other that to provide the US with nuclear strike capability against the Soviet Union". Thank God Nixon didn't win in 60.
https://i1.ytimg.com/i/wYPbK_uzkKTiVSdNdiD9OQ/1.jpg?sz=64
Kennedy nearly started world war 3 by doing this. It may be one reason he was killed. The US enjoyed a first-strike nuclear advantage by having missiles in Turkey, the Soviets wanted to neutralize that. Kennedy could have quietly negotiated a missile swap, because the Soviets wanted that. Instead he took it to the brink of war, and had to do the missile swap anyway, plus promise never to invade Cuba. The United States lost BIG. They still lie in US schools and say Kennedy won. But he was a fool
https://gp5.googleusercontent.com/-dWvUPoOrmAg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/G_PdX1t4RVE/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
@kozmon0t The missiles in Turkey were just part of a huge advantage enjoyed by the Americans during that time. They led with ICBM's (204 for the Americans, 26 for the Soviets), bombers (Over 1500, capable of multiple strikes due to forward bases and refueling fleet, while the Soviets had 100 good for one go), and submarines (32 Polaris missiles in 2 submarines compared to nothing from the Soviets). The Soviets deployed 32 MRBM's in Cuba, the only advantage they had, and it was lost.
https://gp5.googleusercontent.com/-HLB8CcDPdVs/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/CqvOkVemBIc/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
The one you call a great president scared the americans with a fake nuclear threat he created himself. The presence of the missiles in cuba was not confirmed by the pentagon for the good reason that the russians never sent missiles to cuba. The photos of JFK were fake and easy to debunk. The missiles don't even have the good size on JFK's photos, they are too small. A russian ship has a misplaced chimney, and russian submarine has a big hole in its conning tower.
https://gp3.googleusercontent.com/-cEVCSNtQ9nk/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/_7VHhJwqqd8/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
"not peace at the expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom"... Well, that's actually very funny coming from this man's mouth since his party and his policies always promoted the first. In fact, that was their main argument every time they tried to convince the people that the soviet union should not be confronted (and they always brought the nuclear weapons "argument"). It's amazing how much hypocrisy and lies could be contained in just one man...
https://gp4.googleusercontent.com/-HPFSdoGQ9RQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/G4HxYwxujlk/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
I think you have it wrong man. If you want to call a winner, the World was the victor of the cuban missle crisis, but the U.S. was ultimately the victor of the cold war, even though it took half a century. During the cold war the US began developing retaliatory weapons known as the "Strategic Triad" which included long range bombers, subs, and land based missles such as the ones in Turkey that you refered to and also led to the cuban missle crisis.

The crisis of the cuban missiles was faked by JFK; the presence of the cuban missiles was never confirmed by the pentagon, and his photos are fake and ridiculous. People should have wached them more attentively instead of blindly trusting JFK.

JFK was the weirdest president ever, and it is not a compliment. He was not making a normal job of president, he was playing poker, manipulating people. He played the russian roulette and lost.

He did not avoid ww3, for the russians never put missiles in cuba; the photos of JFK were fake and easily debunkable. KFK scared the americans with a fake nuclear threat he created himself.
