Your lessons are very great and helped me a lot with my Spanish! Could you please also explain in one of your next lessons the difference between using Pasado Continuo and Imperfecto, since there is one confusing moment for me. Both of these Tenses are used for ongoing actions in the past. For instance: I was walking. Should it be translated like: Yo estaba caminando. OR Caminaba. How to distinguish which Tense is appropriate for different situation? Thank you!

Me gusta este vídeo. Aquí son las reglas (for those who want a physical copy) ¡Gracias por el vídeo! 1. The imperfect tense is used to talk about past events. It tells what one used to do, how things used to be, or what happened in general. Imperfect is CAPITALIZED in all the examples. Ejemplos: A. De niño, me FASCINABAN los rompecabezas. B. En la escuela primaria, las niñas JUGABAN al tenis cada día. C. En esos días, no TENÍAMOS mucho tiempo libre.

@Cinnamonbeauty7 i'm from Argentina, the problem with language teachers here is that they seem to be obsessed with the idea of teaching English in English or Spanish in Spanish, I mean, they think it helps students to learn the language aurally, but it sometimes doesnt work, especially when students are tired of trying to understand what the teacher is saying. i think that is the reason why these kind of video tutorials are welcomed by learners

Las reglas continuado 2. The verb endings in the imperfect are: A. -ar verbs: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, aban B. -er/-ir verbs: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían 3. Ir, ver, and ser are the only verbs that are irregular in the imperfect. A. De niño, David IBA a clases de kárate todos los días. B. Cuando ERA joven, María practicaba el ateletismo. C. Silvia VEÍA los partidos de básquetbol en la tele todos los sábados.

@bevisponcho thanks for watching. You indeed quoted me correctly, but re-read; it's not at all a contradiction... it's a repetition: I said the same thing twice. An ongoing (I was watching TV) is often interrupted (when she turned the channel), ongoing action is imperfect, interrupting is preterite: veía la tele cuando ella cambió el canal. Teaching all in Spanish is effective in an IMMERSION context, not in a 50-minute class, IMHO.

@jhoncena9111 This is my understanding. The idea of "to begin" is "completed" the moment following the moment of beginning. So, the "beginning" of her crying is OVER and PAST and happened "in an instant" her crying is continuing. Consider the story. Ella epezo a llorar. So, ella lloraba mucho. Por fin, ella lo terminó (again, for the same reason, "finishing" happens all in one moment).

Question about the past progressive vs. imperfect. Estuve tocando el tambor pero ahora estoy tocando el piano. Tocaba el tambor pero ahora toco el piano. These are both correct with different meanings right? The first is like I was doing that, but now I'm over here doing this thing. And the second means I used to do that but I don't anymore, I do this now? You're videos are so helpful!

Aprendi mas con este video que en un semestre en una clase de espanol en mi high school en Miami. Lo unico de lo que hablo mi maestra era el imperfecto (estoy exagerando un poquito), y al fin del ano, yo todavia no sabia lo que era. Yo era un poco vago, pero aun asi deberia aprender algo! Que perdida de tiempo y dinero es la escuela publica tipica en los EE. UU. en mi experiencia.

Thank you so much for putting this up, it's so good when I'm writing a text and forget what to pick. Normally it just comes naturally but sometimes, after too much time spent, nothing sounds right. As a teacher you must've heard what sentences are trickier for students to grasp. A video concerning these hard-to-guess sentences would be much appreciated! :) Again, thank you!

You should split the video or at least state that in the title. I was looking for the imperfect so if i needed that you should simply put Pretirite: 0:00 and Imperfect: 3:29. Would help alot of people such as me! :) But it's just lazy thinking! Thanks and wish me luck on my FINALS...Well, midterms.. same yada yada. GREAT VIDS MY MAN! Like and subscribed from me ;)

Hi, I tried applying the general rule however I got confused when I came up with this example. "Last Wednesday's session was intense but it was a good mental exercise." I know preterite should be used in the first phrase "La sesion del miercoles fue intensa pero fue/era un buen ejercicio mental." The description of the past is what's getting me confused.

I was talking about the capital letters. Spanish is written with a capital "s" because it is a language, and "I" does because it is at the beginning of a sentence and because it ALWAYS does. And sorry but to say "I need learn Spanish" is not informal English, it is just NOT English. And I don't care about this being the internet, what kind of excuse is this ??? Because of people like you I'm starting to make horrible mistakes when I write in English or in my native language ! Make an effort !
https://i1.ytimg.com/i/OwmGvuGEFUIO5t0WHwxTiA/1.jpg?sz=64
A language is a language, show a minimum of respect for it and for the people who are going to read you. In particular avoid to make such a huge mistake as you made in a 5 words sentence. What's more this particular video happens to be for people who are trying to learn a language, they don't necessarily share YOUR view that "because this is Youtube" you have the right to righte lik dis insult everybodi saying they dumb piss of dipshits coze thay say is importentt be carful things u say!!!!
https://gp3.googleusercontent.com/-Kd-RZ1wPheY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/7UAK-mHEqHA/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
@akemikat Think of it less like ongoing and more like something that used to be a trend. The difference is only implied most of the time in english but whenever you use "would" in a sentence talking about the past it's like the same thing. So like, "yesterday I punched a dinosaur in the throat" would be preterito but "Back in my day we used to punch dinosaurs in the throat" would be imperfecto. That's because in sentence one it's more defined and happened once but the second shows a trend.

Here I am, two months later, still none the wiser. Please help me, I do not understand this: Why is the fact that I used to live in Canada 'ongoing' in the past? To me, thats very much completed. And yet we use the imperfect ongoign: Vivía en Canadá ..and not the perfect - completed, as it seems ti should be: viví en Canadá This does not make sense to me? The one thing I can not grasp is what the HEC is something IN THE PAST - and yet ongoing? Seems entirely contradictory to me.
https://gp5.googleusercontent.com/-e7sAmFW7Eyk/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/WEoO19it-cI/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
Both of them, The only difference is based on the use of the pronun: (spain) vosotros, in south america: ustedes and the conjugation: E.g. Verb to talk SA= Ustedes Hablan - Ellos hablan Spain= Vosotros Habláis - Ellos hablan This difference is because the spanish language spoken in spain is more ancient and it still keeps ancient forms (it is also known as "castellano"), meanwhile latin people changed this form and we use the same conjugation in both ustedes and ellos pronouns.

Just one question : what do you want to learn more Spanish for ?? To gain access to new cultures and be able to communicate with other people to share their views on life and the World, or is it because you are passionate about learning about different linguistic systems and trying to understand the underlying rules that support it as it enables you to relativize the absolution of the prism of your own brain structures and helps you enrich your neurono-synapsical network ?
https://i1.ytimg.com/i/OwmGvuGEFUIO5t0WHwxTiA/1.jpg?sz=64
Oh really ?? Doesn't do it for me... And doesn't do it for you everytime either... That's weird... Anyway still very interesting. I love your creativity : r u retarded, ur so retarded, u dumbass, fucking dumbass, nigger, fucking nigger, retarded kid, shut the fuck up u retarded kid, what else ?? oh yeah... piece of dipshit. fucking dumbass... Waiting for more.

I recently failed my spanish test on preterite and imperfect tense and was very stressed because I could not grasp when to use which when my teacher taught it. I just viewed your video teaching when to use which as well as this one and have grasped the concept of them both in 10 minutes, what I could not get in 3 hrs from my professor! Thank you so much!

Excellent video! This is my first real look at preterite and imperfect verb conjugations but the way you just tought it I should have no problem with conjugating regular verbs. O and just so you know when you were going over Regular IR verbs in el imperfecto you said Ustedes vivíais by accident, just thought I would let you know. Great video! Thanks! :)

If I spoke to a woman yesterday and chances are I'll never see her again then I'd use yo hable but if in the past I talked to her and we are in a social circle and I talk with her and someone asks me something and I'd say Yo hablaba because even though it happened in the past it's continuing to happen in the current present.

The easiest way to learn Spanish is at this website SPANISH.LENITO.COM , just copy and paste it on your browser and check it out. I learned Spanish SUPER QUICK! Go to SPANISH.LENITO.COM The distribution refines the quaint slope. The memory discriminates the massive point. The enthusiastic support decreases the print.

Outstanding lesson! My only critique would be to not say "just quickly" because it interrupts the flow of thought and creates a kind of tension. I think you would be fine to leave that out and take the time to say everything you think needs to be said! I play this lesson over and over to help memorize.

Verbs that have stem changes or irregulars in the ustedes/ellos/ellas for of the preterit also change here: Pedir -> pidieron -> pidiera... Dormir-> durmieron -> durmiera... Saber-> supieron -> supiera... Ir/Ser-> fueron -> fuera Besides that, good job and thanks.

+Luis A. I know that some people argue that there are "irregular verbs" in the past subjunctive, but I would say it is a matter of perspective.  It really depends on your definition of "irregular verbs".  For me, fi for example, there is a pattern that can be followed 100% of the time, then there are no "irregular" verbs.  Based on the way I described forming these verbs 1. Ellos form preterit, 2. drop the "ron", 3. add the ending...there are no irregulars.  Using your example of PEDIR...following the three rules I set up, we do not need to deviate from the "regular pattern".  Does that make sense?

Hey. Thanks for this as we'd be doing in Spanish today....but I'm unsure when you actually this tense. Could you provide some examples?

+Alan Greene Hi Alan: There are a number of ways to use the subjunctive (present or past). I will give a few examples along with a link to the respective videos1. Trigger word, que, change of person: Yo quería que estudiaras en México.https://youtu.be/YuKK1Ir3TOs 2. Adverbial clauses: Yo necesitaba estudiar antes de que llegaran unos amigos.https://youtu.be/WfkdEiy5dUM
